Schluter doesn't give any recommendations to do this on their shower tray. It is our recommendation when tile surface area is less than 2" because of the increase in PSI (Pounds per square inch). We call it the Heel effect. If you have a small area and put pressure on it of an average person of 160lbs, you will press the tile into the tray. Hope that helps!

Hi Semperfi B, if you are using mosaic tiles and need to add a thin cement board you will just thin-set the board to the tray. Dry pack mortar is what regular mud beds are made out of. It is a standard sand mix mortar that uses very little water. Here is a good reference: www.johnbridge.com/how-to/deck-mud/

That was my thought. If i have to do that usually skim several coats of allset on the schuter foam pan letting each dry in between then hydroban for overkill couple days before tiling it . just be careful and keep you slope correct. Always rock hard ..never had a issue
