How to extract CLAY from soil | Pottery clay making at home | Make clay from dirt
We can make pottery clay from any soil. Mix soil and water nicely and keep it soaked for 10 minutes. Then filter it to remove small stones from sand. After filtering, leave it for 30 minutes to deposit sand at bottom. Water will be stored at top, then remove water and leave it for 12 hours to dry. Now clay is ready for pottery work.

That is incredibly cool!! If you wanted to get a cleaner clay, I would try putting it in a large amount of water and mixing to re-suspend it, allowing more water-soluble impurities to be washed out on the next filtration! The water coming out of the filter was very dark and murky, meaning there are probably a significant amount of impurities still present

Made Parathaas, Dosa & Idly with the midway muddy clay. Seriously, it got perfect shapes. Well, I'm gonna repeat now!

This is only going to work if the soil you start with has a high clay content and very little sand. You need to add a step where the sand is allowed to settle and is removed.
@lookitsanotherpig9708
@lookitsanotherpig9708 3 жыл бұрын
True! One of the best get arounds I’ve seen for that is to gather soil from the tops of dried puddles (that have been there for a long time) there should be a higher amount of clay there. Checking construction sites where they are digging foundations might also work:)

@@reetashah1728 maybe, but it’s always a delicate balance. A good test is scrunching in in your hand, if it holds its shape you should be good though. Like others said, you’ll need to do a lot of work to remove the organic material and try to up your clay content, I spent a good 4 hours just removing silt from mine. To be honest, it’s a really hit or miss process.

@jf2801
@jf2801 2 жыл бұрын
It says you can use any soil, in the thumbnail. And it looks like normal soil, from a yard or something. If you want the best results, go with silt or even river soil, bc that's basically clay. The silt will definitely only need filtered, and the yield will be less. But, river clay is better. It does still need filtered, some.. but, if the quality is good, it should consist mostly of clay. Or, if you dig deep enough, the firm, moist soil layer should be clay. You can do that in just about any soil, bc it tends to have different layers, no matter where the location. But, I'd recommend the backyard, for that method. It tends to have a less saturated color, as well. I hope this helps. Also, moister climates, to temperate ones work best. Arid, not so much.

Do I always need to preheat the clay sculpture and then kiln it? Can't I leave it like that just like a mud house?

Mine doesnt feel like clay. I strained it several times it's very fine no debris. Mushy and sticky not pliable like clay. Feels more like silt then clay. How do I seperate silt from clay. I waited till water separated from clay and drained water out with a hose a few times then poured it into a pillow case hung to dry. Was still pretty wet few days later ( I made alot ). What am I doing wrong.

Is there any way to further separate more soil out of the clay? Like can you somehow continue to "purify" the mix untill it's just clay and no dirt? Please reply also great video keep up the good work
