Hello Pointer Duck! Squee-hee-hee! I don't know if they still count as fades, but I think you may have discussed using multistrand marls to transition colors? Also, I sort of remember something about how textures like seed stitch can help? If not, could You and Pointer Duck make a vid on those methods?
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 3 жыл бұрын
So yes, that's another approach to making fades. I will need to look into the marling thing more closely before I can do a video on it. I actually have a cowl that sort of makes use of that technique, but I designed it long before fades became a thing so it isn't quite the same thing. But it's a fun knit: www.tumpedduck.com/designs/scrappy-split-stitch-cowl/

I don't know that anything is standardized, but there are terms. You have speckle, kettle dyed, dip dyed, hand painted, gradient, ombre, and I am sure more. I teach a class in variegated yarns and touch on some of the terms. But any time I think I have a handle on it some dyer invents something else LOL.

I loved today’s show! I’d never heard of fades using yarn as a concept until today. Now, as I happen to have one color series, I’m looking to get more!! The colors are so alive, so beautiful separately, let alone together, graduating from light to dark. I’m hooked. I do have a small problem, though. I’ve never unrolled a hank before and certainly would love to learn, as I’m not investing in a skiff (sp?) at this time. Would you happen to know of a video showing how to unravel a hank and roll it up into a ball without making a mess out of it? I would be most grateful. Thank you, Barbara.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 3 жыл бұрын
I think the word you are looking for is swift and if you are going to invest in either a swift or a winder I would recommend a swift. I have a video on how to use a swift but will ponder one on how to do this without a swift (the old school way is to make someone else hold the skein). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMx1ntB307zNaKM.html

@@WatchBarbaraKnit Say that a project pattern has 4 colours or more. How to choose which colours, if for an example I want one of the colours to be neon yellow and I want that colour to be the colour in focus, which supporting colours could be suitable/unsuitable. Or if i want to make the project using just various purples and pinks, should I choose strong colours or soft colours. What would be the difference between these choices. Hope I made it clearer :)

So you you have suggestion for a pattern to use a fade for? Is it better in a shawl or a sweater? Or what would you suggest? I have some minis and not sure the best way to utilize them in a garment. Thanks for the video! Full of good information.
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 3 жыл бұрын
You can fade pretty much anything. There are considerations that have to be made for different projects. Like if you are doing a long sleeved garment do you want the fade to line up on the sleeves? How much yarn do you save for that? If you are doing socks (or mitts), do you want them to match ... you'll have to split up your skeins. Honestly, I think your question is a whole other video LOL. The easiest way to get started is a shawl or a cowl.

@WatchBarbaraKnit

Yes, you can get a fade effect with multiple strands, it's just a different technique and would require it's own video (once I feel I understand it better LOL).

I'm wondering why you didn't use single rows of the new or previous colors after the stripes using double rows (k&p)? Since I'm a new knitter, there might be an obvious or structural reasons for not doing this, but making the alternate stripes narrower is something I was expecting next. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 3 жыл бұрын
Because I’m knitting flat! Knitting single row stripes when you are knitting stripes is a bit tricky and most of the time people don’t fiddle with it. It is doable flat if you really want to do it. Single round stripes when you’re knitting in the round is a no brainer and you could totally do that in that context.

I have to say ur demo is like comparing apples to oranges and, to my mind, I never actually see the fade! Y use a solid for one sample and a variegated for the other?
@WatchBarbaraKnit
@WatchBarbaraKnit 2 жыл бұрын
I have a fairly large number of viewers who are visually impaired so I always make sure to use high contrast yarns so that they can really see what is going on. Then I used some variegated stash yarn to show what that style of yarn looks like in a "fade". The point made in the video is that the technique is the same regardless and I definitely was comparing apples to apples ... the success/failure of a fade depends entirely on your yarn choices.

Yea the only way that kind of works with any colour, is if you hold 2-3 strands together with at least one of those carrying through. Haha, that’s hard to phrase but I think you’d know what I mean. Reading the other comments and adding MARLING yes that’s the word!
