1:14 That's not even sarcasm. That's actually real. I cannot count how many times my flow has been ruined by mom, and then she wonders why I can't focus.
@Artindi
@Artindi 17 күн бұрын
I know, it's hard to go back and forth, when I was younger I once made an agreement with my mom that I would do whatever she wanted me to do (chores and whatnot) till 12:00 noon. and then after that she couldn't bother me. I ended up doing far more chores and time spent helping or working than I would have otherwise, but it was worth it knowing I wasn't going to get interrupted for the rest of the day. :)

WASD is so overdone, though. You should use WAXD instead. It has the benefit of freeing up the S key so you can press it to stand still! Why would you need a stand still button? Because if you don't press it, your character falls down on the ground and breaks their legs or something! Emergent gameplay!

This is honestly relatable. I find myself failing just like the video says whenever I get burnt out (which isn't all that often thankfully). And the weirdest part is my brain thinking I'm making decent progress still, since I tab into the game engine every now and then and make an NPC or put down some walls. My solution to this is to not work on my game at all on at least 1 day of the weekend, and it honestly feels terrible, but it recharges the game making brain so well. Another thing that helps, though a bit silly, is shouting "NO" in my brain whenever I get distracted and go to open social media. Despite your videos containing no helpful information when taken at face value, I can always get something out of them and I love seeing your uploads pop up in my feed.

I spent multiple months trying to make rope. the rope would have made the best damn potentially good 2D platformer gimmick the worlds ever seen. The problem was that it turns out, there's a reason no one had tried to make a 2D platformer about using complicated rope to do many things: the Rope makes the CPU want to hang itself.
@Artindi
@Artindi 17 күн бұрын
The CPU wanted to hang itself, and you supplied it with the rope! 0.0
@MrbaldRevell
@MrbaldRevell 16 күн бұрын
That sounds so cool it's a shame it fucks with the cpu
@mandisaw
@mandisaw 16 күн бұрын
Actual physics is "fuzzy", CPU-intensive, and for a platformer, won't necessarily give you the desired results consistently - you'd end up fighting with it to fit your design. If you want some accuracy, but not physics-engine level, you could do basic calculations that come "close enough". Not sure what aspect of ropes you're aiming for, but they are trated like either floppy springs, or taut lines. The equations for both can be found online, or in a HS physics textbook. Probably some school-tutorial vids around as well. This is game-dev, not a NASA mission - it's okay for us to "cheat" 😅

Jim Croce reference in the description, nice! Lifelong procrastinator, only way out is to understand yourself. If I'm stuck chewing on a problem, I'll just go do something on autopilot, like dishes when home, or going for a walk at work. If my brain is just too tired for coding, but I want to get some game-dev in, I'll watch GDC talks/conference panels, or read up on business/marketing stuff. If I'm feeling media-social, hang out on Discord and do some networking. (Old!Twitter was actually really good for this 😫) If it's just not gonna be a productive day, no matter what, then just relax 😅 So many folks stress over their body wanting to rest, which just causes themselves more stress 😢

Honestly I was so tired of the old cicle I just released a remake of the Ocean View hotel from vice city that I made for another game, the outside was finished but I knew if I were to start working on the interior I would never finish it, so I said "fuck it" and just released it as it was but blocked the walls and windows, people liked it tho.

I love how the intro is always slightly different

I thought about just having the same intro recorded to reuse in every episode. But the small amount of effort it takes to make that intro is worth the authenticity it provides.

My obsessive-compulsive disorder [OCD] makes it hard to apply myself to my game development dreams... it triggers my worst obsession. i have periods of fleeting progress. I'm working really hard to work through it in treatment, now; i feel hollow inside when i avoid it :( need to start again today

But once you start working on your game, you need to remember anytime you aren’t working on your game is time wasted. Family dinner? Nope. Important business meeting? Nope. Grandma’s funeral? Nope. Remind yourself that once you finish your game, you’ll feel rewarded and you’ll be able to do the things you love, like making a game.

Just needed to add a bit how you should spend your time looking up productivity and time management strategies instead of actually working

The most important tip of all: spend 100% of your free time working on your game until you're so burnt out you never want to touch a game engine again. Works every time

Remember that, if by some crazy odds, you actually end up working on something, make it as meaningless as possible. Just make changes for the sake of change without trying to get to a final product. If you finish, there's a chance you could be successful so it's better to try and avoid finalizing anything.
