I think this stuff is so important. Being able to progress isn't about perfecting what you can already do, it's about being willing to fail at what you don't know how to do. The fear of getting hurt from a fall can really slow your progression down. As a 51-year-old who only took up skating a year ago, I'm acutely aware of this. THe days that I'm more willing to fall are the days I learn the most. Thanks Shane!

Starting with the basics! Learning how to fall goes first than learning how to ride. Very helpful mate!

Thanks for posting this, it's a really important thing to learn. I like that you showed practice steps, a lot of these videos just tell you or show you quickly.

Shane, you are the boss. Went into this one a bit dubiously, but that is spot on. Never even through about practice falls. 👍

Learnt much from this video, appreciate it! Especially how you explained the significance of the smaller exercises leading up to the big ones. I do wish people would remember that any sport is only as enjoyable as they're able to help themselves stay as injury-free as possible. Many times we launch into learning the "basics" without first knowing how to fall safely!

Thank you Shane! This video helped me out so much! 😀 After falling a couple of times during the first session with my surfskate, I found this video(haven't skated before either). These last days I've been warming up and practising falls for about 40 mins before a session. It's such a huge difference! I'm able to ride the board better in this relaxed state and I'm not scared as much about falling as I was before. And since I started your warmup routine, I've not had a single bad fall! Props to you getting so much information across by just showing it with your body language!😁

That is wise, I should have practice too but i unfortunately did not take the time to warm up. Result: a broken ankle.

I like this video. Unfortunately locking your elbows and arms straight is a natural instinct. So many elderly fall this way and suffer life changing injuries. The rolling will take time to learn. My first fall I was able to throw my arm out to simulate a break-fall. The fall that hurt my wrist - none of those techniques kicked in as instinct. I was in denial that I was falling and I was on the ground before I knew it. 😂😂. The safest way for me is to wear protective gear and be conservative. Especially when I am starting at age 50. Sometimes falling happens too quickly for some people to respond - they just react instead: lock your joints and become very intense.

Sliding is better than rolling for most push yourself along or to the side to deflect the linear momentum into angular momentum and watch vids of good skaters falling few to none roll.

This is in the context of surfskating, not downhill Longboard or traditional skating. Surfskaters don't go that fast and mostly attempt snaps manoeuvres. Besides this video is for beginners to gain an idea of falling. As one progresses things definitely become more individualised.

No you definitely can't skate with a broken leg, I learned it the hard way ! I twisted my ankle which broke at both sides. The result was an operation and my leg in a cast for 6 weeks. I watched this video once before, but did not practice...it was a big mistake. I am 56 and not very supple anymore. Too bad it happened so quickly because I had just bought a Carver triton to replace my longboard. I don't know if I will dare trying surfskate again but at the same time I hate to give up.

Wack! Straight up. All these falls are at walking speed. Try pulling those monkey-stance falls with some speed. Won’t work. For actual falls you always need to hit and roll forward. Then again you’d know this if you actually skated and shih

This is a terrible tutorial. There's much better ways to fall: do fast and tight turns over sandy concrete, wear a blindfold near some stairs, drink a bottle of vodka before skating, remove the grip tape and apply butter... It's pretty easy actually, need I carry on?

Many people around the world have picked up surf skateboards and they don’t surf. They may live inland or may have other reasons. I find the surf now is too crowded since COVID lockdown (no one has etiquette and they steal waves off others). I brought my surf skateboard because my back injury had kept me land locked. I see surf skateboarding as it’s own form of skateboarding. Yes, it is great for surf cross training. But surfing is also about reading waves, being able to swim back to shore if your leg rope breaks, paddling strength and endurance and popping up (which is hard to learn in its own right). Just because someone doesn’t surf doesn’t take anything from them for just having fun and learning new skills on a surf skateboard. More power to them, especially if “they don’t surf”. Don’t get me wrong, I know you mean well by saying surfing will help surf skateboarding but mostly it can be the other around. Having lost strength and endurance due to various shoulder and back injuries. I think need a bigger or more buoyant surfboard. I am loving my surf skateboard and I had the entire netball field to myself this evening. I could never get that in the ocean. Anyway, take this reply with a grain of salt because I will admit that I am not good surfing and I just started surf skateboarding at 50 years old.
