I was thinking the same thing. If you had a multi layer stack you could grow way better and control the environment also. The only thing that I would be concerned with is that the liquid fertilizers and such would absolutely take away from the end product. I'm sure soil consistency and composition and soil mineral content and such has to do with the end product. You work the soil composition and the flower genetics to make the best procust it takes generations of growing to get the right soil and flower for the soil and region.

Secondly those are three countries that are the major producer of saffron naturally over thousands of years, Iran being the largest of around 90 % of the total production and they never used any modern technology like in the video above , also there are a lot of small producers no doubt but they production is very low and recent compare to the other. Use of modern technology as the one above is a new thing.
