cattal feedlot has been practiced for decades across the globe.in kenya however, the system has not picked up really well with most beef producers citing high cost of feeds as the major challenge. I visited Matt,a farmer in the coastal region of Kenya and this is how he does it...

This is an excellent setup; very well thought through with great priorities i.e. starting out with the feeds first. My prayer for you as that the local community will continue to be welcoming to you in the medium and long term and that this will result in sustainable transformation of beef production in that area... Great work farmer. Watching from south Africa. May i suggest, since the maize is for animals, cut and crush the whole maize plant with the cobbs. It makes good feed. Check your grain ratio per plant, and then add your other concentrates. That reduces work and wastage of your stover

There are so many things to pick out from Matt besides beef lots. 1.coastal region can be a bread basket even with the little rain it receives. Just plant the right maize seeds and the right animal feeds crops that do not require much rain like panicum grass, sorghum, sim sim, sugar graze and take advantage of the erratic little rains and crops will grow with the little rain they get 2. Even with saline water , one can still do farming as long as the soil is fertilized not by expensive chemical fertilizers but readily available cow manure. Not even kalro or our Agri institutions can figure this out? 3. crops even grow faster in coastal region than even the most rainy places in Kenya and their leaves are bigger, in my little knowledge of science i thinks its due to the proximity to the ocean which creates the humidity. the ocean provides moisture which then gets to land and mixes with hot weather and humidity is created resulting in plant growth. Thats why you notice the coast is actually green even in dry seasons due to the effects of the ocean blowing moisture into the land. These are the people the president needs to invest in. folk who are actually doing it and walking the talk not just some folk in the minisitry seating in airconditioned rooms pushing papers, and wasting tax payers money in conferences at home and abroad instead discussing how to irradicate poverty via farming instead use that money to invest in MAtt. If i were President, I would employ him into govt, ask him to give me a plan with a budget and everything that he needs on irradicating poverty in N. kenya and coastal region via beef lot farming and once the plan is done instruct him to implement it and the govt will be 100% supporting him.

This can literally be a multi billion dollar business easily if the Govt supported Matt. I have posted a video on how Australia intends to expand its beef export business and when watching the video i said this could literally be Kenya. If those in charge could put their heads together. The lands scape for cattle rearing in Australia is similar to Northern Kenya infact if you saw the landscape without not knowing which country it is you would say Northern Kenya. But Kenya has a slight advantage, the proximity of LAMU PORT is the gate way to the world for North Kenya exports. There is also a direct road network from N. Kenya to Lamu. The entire Kenya hinter land from Coast all the way to northern Kenya is ideal for cattle keep. cattle keep is the main economic activity for this region so we are not starting from scratch all we need is a plan an coordination. cattle herders will be advised to sell their cattle when they get to a certain age and weight this will also prevent herders from keeping large herds which they can not support during droughts and leave them to die. Farmers in N. Kenya and herders will also be encouraged to grow animal feeds like grasses that do well in that area and other drought resistant animal feed crops whereby they can feed their cattle once they reach a certain weight in feed lots. 1. Matt intends to export his beef to the middle east via lamu port. The coastal region and N. Kenya can be suppliers of cattle to matts beef lot. cattle herders will be instructed on the age and weight requirements needed for their cattle to be accepted by matts beef lot.The cattle should be of a certain age and weight before they can be sent to the Beef lot. Basically Matts beef lots would act as fattening grounds. The fattening should be at the quickest time possible to reduce on costs on feeding. 2. There will be other farmers who will grow the specific feeds required for the cattle. Matt has shown us that even dry areas can produce animal feed crops. In the middle east one live bull goes for $750. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMlpotuWnbvLaJs.html

Alot of takeaways. So basically Kenya does not need to import any food. 1. Even in the driest areas these areas can produce food. 2. Secondly one can use ocean water to farm as long as the soil is well fertilized. 3.Thirdly its so sad the county govt can not advise the residence to practice a modern way of farming. Just a few tweaks and his neighbours who practice traditional ways of farming are unwilling to adopt this new method. I think the reason is they can not afford to buy the high breed seeds thus they chose to recycle the seeds. 4.What they can do they can act as contract farmers for Mr. Muthama. he provides the seeds and know how and they supply him with maize for his cattle and even have extra for their own consumption. 5. Mr. Muthama has a vision to be an exporter of beef to Middle east and the area is conducive since its close to Lamu port His vision is to have 10,000 goats and 1200 beef cattle at any one time, expand his feeds storage capacity to hold 100,000 bales of feeds meaning he will increase his goat and beef capacity to may be double or triple to hwta he has not to become a consistent supplier of beef to the middle east. 6. The entire Lamu region and hinterland can become an export beef hub if this type of animal feedlot can be replicated in the entire region can Kenya can be the major supplier of beef to Middle east. The middle east gets their beef from Australia which is thousands of miles away, and Kenya can be a very competative market for beef export to the Middle east if the govt can put its head together and support people like Muthama to create feed lots in the entire coastal. The value chain will also create jobs for feeds growers, transporters and employ folk to work on these feed lots

You can add 1 kg per day until the water clears up(where you can see the bottom of the well properly) and the hard taste of the water goes away. Then add about 5 extra KG so the water stays fresh. Adding more than needed will not harm the water or pople because this is a natural/organic product. If you can test the water before adding the crushed sea shells, it will be great. Then test the water after the water has cleared up after adding the sea shells. Make sure the sea shells are crushed into tiny granules no bigger than a grain of rice. @@farmbusines

So lake turkana can also be used to grow crops. The water is saline but not very saline. if Matt can use the water from his wells which have triple salinity due to the salt factory that makes salt causing the ground water to be salty than sea water so i can imagine Lake turkana water can be used for irrigation.
