Great video. Just what I needed to know to be able to supervise my contractor, who started off with a bang ten days ago and has turned out to be a bit of a "fly-by-night" . Delays mostly because of rain but also because his main worker went to a wedding in Mozambique after day one and has not yet come back ....

Hi, thanks for the thorough info on how to do this. I intend plastic fibre coating an existing concrete 'above ground' pool. It was originally a 'cisterna' for storing water for a small holding ut it was then tiled as a pool. After 5 years or so, the cracks have become too much and its near impossible to find them or cure them with tiles in the way. I am going to clear the tiles- clean and then coat in a similar way to you. Two questions...First, mine has very acute corners and I wonder if I should add round edges or will the fibre sheets accept being folded through nearly 90 degrees? Secondly, do you have a product name for the sheeting you used- The company you quote seems to have many options and as I am not in S.A. its not really fair asking them. Thanks again and good luck to anybody else who is going to try doing this!
@ecologicaltime
@ecologicaltime 6 жыл бұрын
hi, harsh corners can be rounded with some cement under the fibre but its not mandatory. Fibre can do 90 degree bends. School swimming pools have these right angles and the fibre handles it fine. You could do a second layer if you are concerned or if its a place where there is a lot of traffic - steps.The matt i used is the brand called Nivitex but its simply a chopped stranded matt. The company that sells the coatings would also sell the matt surely?
@steveinjava
@steveinjava 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. I will ask about Nivitex here in Portugal. I was going to ask about layers...You reckon a single layer is ok for the majority of the pool where people do not walk? I can't wait to get started and will be ready to drink a toast to you for your assistance when it is done!
@ecologicaltime
@ecologicaltime 6 жыл бұрын
thanks, if the glass is supported by a cement / concrete shell as you stated, then yes one layer is correct. Overlap by 10cm where the matts meet each other as shown in the video
@steveinjava
@steveinjava 6 жыл бұрын
Hi again. I have finally sourced the resin with a hardener that is right....But, like every other store I have visited or phoned, they only have glass fibre mesh- Its quite fine mesh but it is NOT matting. Do you think it matters? If it is all covered in resin perhaps its ok? I think the mesh is stronger than the matting so its just if you think the resin will not consistently fill the holes or the final surface is likely to feel rough becaause the mesh leaves an impression on the dried resin coat? Sorry to ask all these questions but your help is much appreciated.

@@ecologicaltime Thank you so much for the feedback. My kids are nagging me to get the pool fixed and every pool company/contractor that I contact wants to sell me a new pool. My pool is currently cement (concrete) and there are many cracks that I need to fill before attempting to fiber-glass the pool. The size of my pool is 15m X 6m and another 0.5m (6.5m) by the steps. If I may ask, where did you purchase your product from and what was the total cost (more or less) for the materials? I browsed the web and the material seem very expensive if I purchase it locally (South Africa) There are companies that sell it for much less (oversees). The two gentleman that assisted you in fixing your pool, do you perhaps know if they would be available to help me fix my pool as well?

Hello, That looks a nice job, hope you don't mind I have a couple of questions. The gap under the coping stone what size was this, where you tucked the mating into. Also did you have to use anything else to seal between the coping stone and the fiberglass. Going down this road ourselves as we can't find anyone here in France that is willing to do this . Thanks for a great video. Chis
@ecologicaltime
@ecologicaltime 6 жыл бұрын
thanks. The gap was about 10-15mm high owing to the coping being inclined a little so rain water does not run into the pool. The depth under the coping is about 15-20mm. As long as the coping is cemented then the fibre with the resin is sufficent. Just press it in quite firmly so that the fibre gets in at least 10mm under the coping. make sense?

When you removed the old fiberglass, why didn't you just stay with the concrete instead of adding the fiberglass again. Fiberglass and resins doesn't bond to concrete and will just delaminate again. I repair these fiberglass over concrete pools all the time and have to fix the delaminating on most all of them.
@ecologicaltime
@ecologicaltime 3 жыл бұрын
i found that if the layer of cement is a strong mix, it bonds like crazy. However, if the fibre shell can move (like if the pool is left empty and in the sun), then it can come off when it changes shape owing to heat.

As you can see that the Fiberglass did not bond to the concrete in the first place. Why not refinish out the concrete surfaces instead of reapplying the fiberglass to the concrete that will not bond again? I have a Fiberglass Pool refinishing company and run across a lot of this type of Fiberglass and concrete pools, most of them the fiberglass has come loose, not bonding to the concrete and is causing problems.
@dalekoehn3955
@dalekoehn3955 2 жыл бұрын
@Simon Evans That's right, Polyester resins do not bond to the gunite or marcite surfaces. We see it all the time, where the fiberglass sheeting is coming loose. You are better off staying with the surfacing agents and finishes that are for gunite and concrete pools.
