This was the most effective strategy I've seen (after many videos) to really get out all of the bones and have a clean and even filet. Thanks for the great work!

This worked ok. I tried this because I wanted hubby to smoke it. However I feel like there is a lot of wasted meat. I was using previous frozen smaller trout, so that may be why it was more difficult. Fresh would be easier. I think it’s easier to debone after cooking though with less meat waste. One thing I didn’t catch you say is to make sure you have a VERY sharp knife!!

Very helpful, despite my earlier snide remark. If I ever order a whole trout in a restaurant, I'll try and replicate on the cooked fish what you showed here and maybe I won't end up with a mouth full of bones in every bite! Thanks.

Haha why would you order a trout at a restaurant and then have to replicate what was shown in the video...? You gonna go back into the kitchen & show them how it's done? Hah 😂

@@MichaelKaal-TriFisher Personally, I think it's worth the extra few minutes to pick them out and have a nicer fillet, but can see it being a problem if you have a whole mess of fish to clean. I haven't had that problem yet. : (

When you keep trout for cooking later, do you need to cut the gills to bleed them out like you do saltwater fish?

I don’t believe it necessary for Trout.

Great video! Small suggestion, start with a dead fish. Either bleed them out by nicking the gill plate with your knife or insert tip of your knife in top of head and rotate knife a couple times. More humane treatment of fish. Thanks

Oh don’t worry, he was dead. I just smacked him in the head. Very fresh fish still have their neurons fully intact, even though they're dead. As soon as you add a bit of salt to the exposed muscles, the neurons are triggered and the muscles contract. So very dead fish will continue to move about until they use up all their energy stores.

Will getting the blood on the fillet affect taste?
@MichaelKaal-TriFisher
@MichaelKaal-TriFisher 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Nate, after you’re done cleaning the trout always rinse the fillet. A lot of people will bleed a fish after they catch it to reduce the fishy flavor. Overall just make sure you rinse everything after you’re done and it shouldn’t affect the taste

Terrible job of fileting, knife is to small and you don't need a fork. and thatguy-art all fish have bones and fileting them makes cooking them much easier.

I prefer a knife with some flex when I'm fileting trout. I have gotten to where I don't cut through the ribs at all. Not every time and not every trout, but it's possible

I have noticed alot of people leave the skin on. Is there a reason for it? Maybe it depends on how you are cooking it in the end? We always skinned them but maybe I have been missing something.
