Nice method. I like the rib cutting first before filleting.

Been looking at different ways to clean perch. I have done some others, now I will try this one. I don't have an electric fillet knife (yet) but I will try it with a regular knife to see what works. A friend of mine has been bringing me some big bags of perch recently, so if I can save time cleaning them, it will be worth it.

Glad you enjoyed it. Sometimes a regular knife will do just as good, if not better. You will spend less time accidentally going through the backbone for sure.

I ordered two of these based on the reviews. kzfaq.infoUgkxqmKabisEv81ul5v7OhvVxxOpt2CJruI- Received them on time and they look good. I really like the handle on these knives as they feel good in my hand. I'm giving them 4 stars on look and feel, but have not had the chance to put them to the test yet. I mostly fish for catfish and can hopefully try them out in the next few days. If they hold an edge throughout a limit of catfish, they'll be worth another star.Update...I used the 9" strong and the 9" fillet on a mess of catfish. I did put a sharpening on these before I started. I want a razor edge to fillet fish but they weren't quite that sharp. The people who gave these knives crappy reviews and said they were sending them back was because they weren't razor sharp. So what, do they not have a knife sharpener?? Good grief! I mean you have to sharpen any knife from time to time.I personally like them and am pleased with them. If you're too lazy to sharpen a knife then hire someone to clean your fish lol.I've never bought a knife in my life that would shave hair right out of the box. Don't be afraid to purchase the knives. They're pretty nice in my opinion.

Is that a common size to keep? I've caught many that size and only one or two bigger ones, but I have been releasing them... maybe I should be eating them!

Bak in the day i would selk the full milk jug for 40-50 dollars per jug. Gard tedious work. But, well worth the effort. Good memories

@@spkgear it was. But I was hanging out with good friends and my dad and we would all sit in a circle around a lil fire and shuk oysters all night on weekends because that was the only time we had off. Sometimes we would even stay out on the weekends. It was hard tedious work , but, when your around friends and family it's not to bad. Plus I was making a couple hundred dollars per day. So not so bad. Some weekends we wouldn't take off especially if we were catching a lot of oysters or shrimp. Then we would continue work on the boat instead of coming in for a couple of days. You gotta get the fish when they are there. Hard word , yes, but memerable times.

If you only catch few perch and want to catch more otherday you can put perch in freezer full without doing anything to it. We call this "freezing the round one / round fish" as the fish is still round and fat with all the internals. Freezing rounded will work basicly on most fish and freezing kills any parasites. Of course you can't store the fish a decade this way to ensure its edibility. Fish is always best fresh eaten. But this is just a tip to preserve those fish when waiting some more catch. You can take those fish out of freezer any day and let them melt a bit to fillet them. BTW. those perch eggs-bags are delicious fried when catch out from cold water.

Never bothered with Perch before but cought my first one today. Mine was much bigger than this. I wonder if it was a different species of perch? This thing is a good 22+" and around 2.5 pounds.
@spkgear

I am guessing you are catching a different species. Yellow Perch are usually under 12 inches unless you are fishing real trophy waters. Even then, the biggest are around 16". Glad you are out fishing! Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you haven't already.

@@spkgear Yep, these aren't so yellow. Sorta like a small bass. Was good eating. I got it in a lake in Michigan up toward the border.

Just looked at the DNR web site and they say we have Pike, bass and "yellow perch". But this thing was bigger I never did offically measure it but have a pic of my daughter holding it up and she's holding by the tail oh... 6" over her head and fish's head is below her chest. It's at min 16" but looks 22" to me. Sure hope I'm not mistaking it for a bass but it just looks like a perch. It just can't be a bass. All the on-line pics I see makes me very confadent it's a perch.

Hmmm 🤔...I found out Trout, perch and crappies are easy...larger Fish take more patience. Pike have extra bones and once you learn how to clean them , you are a master. I only use actual filet knives because I broke my electric fillet knife cutting wood.... LoL 😂

I grew up with the regular fillet knives doing this same process. Easier to keep from cutting through the backbone.

You don't need to add water in the freezer bag to preserve long term. This is not a requirement but only a preference to the person doing this.
