In this filter sweep tutorial, I keep things beginner friendly and share how to automate eq to get that underwater filter effect in Logic Pro X!
Learning how to make filter sweeps with automation in logic is a great music production tool for creative transitions in your music!
For today's purposes, I'm demonstrating how this effect can be used on drums to keep things interesting as the song transitions from verse to pre chorus, and then pre chorus to chorus.
🛠️ Under The Hood 🛠️
1️⃣ After selecting the channel of the sound(s) you want to apply this effect to, insert the stock EQ plugin at the very end of your fx chain.
2️⃣ With the Logic X stock eq plugin open, enable the band located on the top right corner. We're going to use a bandpass filter to get us that muffled sound. Specifically, a low pass filter in Logic.
3️⃣ Drag that frequency band all the way up and down to eq sweep. Get a feel for "how underwater" you want your audio to be.
4️⃣ After practicing a bit, make sure you move your playhead BEFORE the section of music you want to apply this to.
5️⃣ Locate the green "Read" button on your audio channel (right above the volume fader and panning knob). Click it, and select "Touch."
6️⃣ With touch automation enabled, you're ready to press play and drag that eq band through the frequencies in the same way you practiced.
🔔 Remember, if you're not pumped with your take- simply undo it (click "command Z") and repeat this step until you're happy with it!
7️⃣ If you want to take things up a notch, start messing with the gain of that high eq band... start somewhere around 2db or 3db. This will increase the resonance or "ringing" of the filter. Dial it in to taste! For instance, the Drake filter sweep (which is a popular reference) has a higher resonance.
