Finally Stop Slicing Your Driver: 3 Simple Tricks to Start Hitting Nice, High Draws Today
Are you still struggling to stop slicing your driver? Are you one of the countless golfers who can consistently hit a solid, straight shot with your irons, only to slice the ball every time you pick up a driver?
It’s aggravating, but for what it’s worth, it’s not just you. As a golf instructor, I could easily fill my days just helping people fix their golf slice.
The slice is an extremely common problem for golfers, but not because it’s difficult to fix. It’s common because most golfers are working with bad information. In very recent years, we’ve learned brand new insights about the science of the slice. This new knowledge has revealed that traditional advice for fixing the slice has actually done more to hurt golfers than help them.
Not only that, the rules for helping you hit a nice, high draw on your iron don’t apply when you’re trying to stop slicing your driver. The bottom line: With the right information, you can finally start hitting nice high draws off the tee. This skill is not at all out of your reach. I’m about to tell you:
What’s causing you to slice your driver
Why you slice your driver but not your irons
3 keys to fix your slice once and for all
Plus, I’ll teach you a bonus drill to help you get more distance off the tee, so you can make the most of that nice, high draw. First, a little clarity.
What Causes You to Slice Your Driver?
For the purposes of fast-tracking you from problem to solution, I’m going to keep my explanation of the slice super simple. If you’re interested in diving deeper into the science of the slice, I encourage you to check out some of our other videos and articles on the subject.
For now, I’ll just say this: When we talk about the slice, we want to focus on two major factors that have a big influence on your ball flight. Those factors are:
Path: The direction in which you swing the club. The path of your club head might be traveling to the right, left, or directly at the target.
Face: The orientation of your club face in relation to the target. Again, your club face could be pointed to the right, left, or square to the target. The combination of these two factors largely determines whether you’re going to slice the ball or hit a draw.
If you’re a right-handed golfer, the formula for a nice, high draw is something like this: Path is aimed about 4 degrees to the right of the target. Face is either square to the target or 1-3 degrees to the right. If you’re like a lot of golfers, it’s your swing path that’s tripping you up. Instead of traveling to the right of the target, your path is traveling to the left at impact.
Now, you might be thinking, “But my path has great results with the iron. Why would it be different for my driver?” Stick with me. I’m about to explain why you haven’t stopped slicing your driver even if you’re hitting great shots with your irons.
Understanding the Slice: Driver vs. Irons
This is where it gets interesting. Even if you already knew about the importance of face orientation and swing path, I’d be willing to bet what comes next is brand new information. To understand why the exact same swing gets you different results on your driver versus your irons, start with this question: What is the one thing people tell you to do to get maximum distance off your driver?
If you’ve ever been to a club fitting or a golf lessons, you have almost definitely been told that you want to hit up on the ball. This is the first and greatest key to driving the ball as far as possible. When you hit the ball off the tee on an ascending blow, you increase launch and decrease spin. The result is longer distance. For your irons, on the other hand, you always want to make contact at a descending angle.
So, let’s say you’ve been following these two tips to the letter. But you use the exact same swing path for both your drivers and irons. You’re going to get different results.

Todd, thank you for this video. I have been struggling with random snap-hooks and push-flares with my driver. I generally do not slice the ball so I didn't think this video applied to me, but I could not fix my way out of it. Your advice on finishing with a high handle caught my eye and I tried it out on the range. Voila! I started hitting nice high draws! It feels so much better than my old follow-through which was low and around by body. I put this swing into play over the weekend and while it is still a work in progress, I am very satisfied to this point. The one thing that could improve my consistency is the feeling/position of my right hip at the transition into the downswing. I need a trigger or key to help me find that. Thanks.

Todd, I suffer from the exact issue covered in your video. Thank you for explaining. One question though. What position does the Club head need to be in to hit the draw if the path is to the right of target? Square or closed? If open, I assume the ball will be blocked straight right? Many thanks.

Thanks for the tips. If the swing path is parallel to the closed stance then don't we open the club face at impact? or how do we square the club face when we swing inside out? is you back swing towards 8-9 o'clock position (12-6 Target line)?

Loving your work Todd ! Tried similar to this set and it’s really worked for me, it’s just having the confidence to try it in our medal comps as our course is quite narrow with lots of trouble 😫 My bad shot now is a block to the right, but my grip is neutral, so any ideas or swing thoughts to avoid this and 3 off the tee? Many thanks 👍🏻

Todd - I’m a new subscriber and love the tutorials. I’m an 8.8 index but I rarely hit fairways. Have just started changing my foot position like you recommend which has helped but I find I’m drop kicking (hitting the ground before the ball) my drives. Why am I doing this and how do I fix to hit flush contact without grounding ahead of the tee/ball?

Thanks for the comment and question! Try hovering your club before you take your swing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eZOnZaSW1bCyn6M.html Sometimes bearing the weight of the club before starting the swing can help with contact, and will help you with the feeling of hitting up on the ball. Be sure to let us know if it helps!

Thanks for all your work, Todd. Do I need to have more of a stronger grip? Should I address the ball with more of a closed face? Or does this all depend on how my face comes through the ball at impact?

Todd, I'm confused by your 3rd key, namely finishing with the handle "high & to the right." The video clearly shows your handle high and to the left. Are you simply saying it should be high and less to the left than we may have previously been doing? Thanks, Ken

Hi Todd Tried this on the golf course and I waited until the 7th hole at our course which set up perfectly for this shot. Did exactly what you said and there it was! A high soft long draw! Next hole agin sets up perfectly for the shot and pounded it, nice high and soft. Lol but that was it....the rest where big pulls. I know I know........what I was doing was not what you said to do. But how do I get out of that? Was I maybe pivoting off my back leg? Let me know your thoughts, big THANKS by the way for almost changing my life. LOVINGLY WJJGS

I had been having a problem with a pull draw also. I figured out I was extending early and getting out on my toes a bit. I think after I started hitting it straighter there was a temptation to try and swing a bit harder. This caused me to come out of proper posture. I have to keep reminding myself to relax and stay in proper balance.

The third tip is finish with the handle high and to the right. What do you mean by to the right? It is on the left side of your body. Thank you!

Great question David, this would be to the right of your intended target. Imagine the fairway is a baseball field, and center field is the middle. You want that high handle finish toward right field. There is a great drill we like to use at about the 5 minute mark in this video that helps explain what you should be feeling: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLCBfppps7mWdJs.html Thanks for watching!

Nice video!…This fits me to a “tee” 😁(sorry)....My Irons are straight but have struggled with the slice for 30+ years …I would hood the club to straighten out my drive ( kinda like putting a bandaid on a massive cut, still out to in swing but would square up the face )...I’ve been working on this technique but it’s sooo hard to trust swinging to the right, but loving the challenge,…Thanks!

Closing the clubface is the hard part of the driver draw. The ball will still slice (push slice) unless you know how to close the face properly.
@USGOLFTVshow
@USGOLFTVshow 5 жыл бұрын
spakuloid good point...remember you just need to get the face left of that path...that is the key to the draw

Yes - but people that slice have a hard time managing the clubface - especially with the driver. So it may be that we are drawing our irons but pushing or push slicing the driver - which is me. @@USGOLFTVshow

Todd I will give this a try next time I’m at the range. I wouldn’t say I hit a slice. My shot is more of a fade but enough fade to get you in trouble. I don’t know how to explain this but to stop hitting this fade I feel like I have started flipping my wrist at impact. For whatever reason it seems like it helps me square my club face. I will usually keep in the fairway but my shots are high and I am loosing distance. I want to stop doing this as I feel I can’t continue to be consistent with it. I would rather be hitting a draw.
