Whether we like it or not, people will make snap judgements about where you work. There is an implicit ranking or tier system on companies.

If FAANF is where it is now, there is a reason. Also, at Blind, there was a post regarding the difficulty of working at FAANG, and someone with 20 of experience was challenged for the first time in his life! Think about that, guys.

I also consider autonomy and impact into consideration. Some big high prestige companies can make you very stagnant in terms of growth and impact. There are 10K+ engineers in such companies, its very hard to have autonomy and impact in such a company and you are often just treated as a resource.

Rahul, one point which you didn't address in your videos and was raised in LinkedIn comments is regarding role expectations. For his level and role, maybe the expectation was driving architecture?.

Just curious, is there a severe disadvantage to getting that agency dev job in Iowa before interviewing at big tech companies (especially in this job market)? Can these lower-tier jobs act as stepping stones for less experienced folks (bootcamp grads for example)?
@gopalakrishnan9610

No there isn't. It will be hard to get interviews as recruiters won't know what you worked on. But skill wise I don't see a problem as long as you have worked on significant projects even as a freelancer. They might not have the scale of big tech but guess what, most people coming into big tech don't have that experience either. Lot of tools are inbuilt in my experience. As long as you have the basic tech skills and communication skills I don't see why it will be a problem In this job market: near to impossible tbh. Big tech have stopped hiring big time and will be very hard for them to consider people from other not very known companies.

Absolutely, that happens all the time. For most people, their first job after graduation is not something the perfect job that they always wanted. Some experience is better than no experience, and there's still a lot to learn.

FAANG is top tier? Do you know how easy FAANG is to get into compared to the likes of firms like Citadel, HRT, and Jane Street?

FAANG was, is, and will be always TOP tier companies, they are not selling the experience, they are selling prestige, 10+exp from faang will make it so easy to get into the companies that you listed.

You don't judge a companies "Tier" by how difficult it is to get into it.

@@gopalakrishnan9610 Well, there's a reason why these companies are harder to get into, the people in there are way more competitive and passionate compared to FAANG.

Maybe it's the American in me, but I think it's a bit cringe to rank companies in "tiers". I know this is done systemically worldwide, like China has "n-tier" cities. But ranking companies, like houses, is pretty personal, according to someone's preferences and lifestyle. But I know that younger or relatively inexperienced people don't know what their preferences are yet.

So true that everyone has a personal set of priorities, and the best company for me may be very different than the best company for you. Society has a way of stripping all the nuance in these evaluations and focus it only on the commonly accepted criteria.

😂 It’s so dishonest to act like other people are interpreting your tier system as you assigning their career itself a value and you yourself didn’t intend that or think that way.

Faang Maang fanga manga are nothing compared to tech companies in the fintech sphere, esp trading HFT stuff, neither in terms of code complexity and latency and other metrics, and nor in terms of compensation.

Have you worked at both FAANG and at a trading firm? If not, how would you know how complex the code and latency requirements are for each?
