@@gman20031 Check no fuses have been blown. If not do a parasitic draw to find which circuit is affected. Then obtain the wiring diagram for that circuit and then isolate the problem area by voltage drop testing. Dim lights means that there is resistance on that circuit which is taking voltage away from the lights. If the fuse for the lights that don't work is blown and you replace the fuse with the correct rated fuse and it blows again then you have a short circuit on that components electrical circuit. You will need to do a voltage drop test as well using a wiring. diagram

You can also do the same thing by using a small 12v bulb with leads and alligator clips attached in place of the meter connected between the battery minus post and the ground terminal wire you have first removed. It will light when there is even a tiny parasitic current flowing. The brighter the light then the more the current draw. If you want to try it out then hookup the light as described and open the glove box or a door. The light will get very bright. I learned this from an old mechanic. Be careful out there.

As a general rule when you use the term "short" you will generally see smoke or find burnt wires. If your radio is still drawing power it is likely you have a switch that is malfunctioning. A short means negative and positive have touched each other

I'm a automotive tech. And more specifically an electrical diagnostic tech, smoke and burned wires are not common symptoms of a short. In fact, I've only seen that happen 2 times. Second, many components can short internally, and cause a parasitic draw. (A radio for example or modules typically) the poster of the video should have mentioned this. The title is misleading. A short doesn't nessicarily mean ground and positive have touched. There's a few other types of electrical shorts. Stop spreading misinformation.

I think it is a bad video because the tech should also be considering why the amplifier is putting power to the sub with key off overnight. With the key out the amp should power down and kill power to the sub as the mosfets shut off. The radio output to turn on amplifier should also be tested to see if it is shutting off or if the amp is bad. Maybe the short at the sub burned a transistor in the amp and now the amp will not power down properly. More testing required for guaranteed workmanship.

@@Change-Maker look for videos using a bell telephone tool to find the short. You pull the fuse and induce a signal into the circuit with a short. Then there is a second tool that makes a tone, you run it along the harness until the tone stops, then open the harness. You can also buy a similar tool made by power probe. It comes in the power probe master kit #5.0. From what i hear the bell tool works the same just people find the bell tool cheaper.

Great video, it was very descriptive. I had a small question, I have a fuse that keeps blowing (its the tail fuse, controls the tail lights, parking lights, and the license plate lights). I found the problem to be the parking lights, since the fuses stopped blowing when they were disconnected. What's the next step?
@JunkyDIYguy
@JunkyDIYguy 6 жыл бұрын
the only reason why a fuse would blow is flowing too much current through the fuse. Either someone installed brighter light bulbs that require more current than regular light bulbs or splicing the tail light wires to draw power from it to power up something else like extra brake lights or reverse lights. Assuming it's not the case in your car or you don't have a faulty body control module, i highly recommend to check the wiring harness for any shorts. Looks like You have a short to ground. possibly anywhere between the fuse and the tail lights on the live wire that goes to the tail lights has a damaged insulation, that rubs against the chassis.
@sachinnair1613
@sachinnair1613 6 жыл бұрын
I did install aftermarket headlights that have CCFL halos, but on all the reviews on Amazon, they said that they work fine and don't require additional power. How would one go about checking the wire harnesses? I have access to a wiring diagram, and I located the grounds for the tail lights, parking lights, and the license plate lights.
@JunkyDIYguy
@JunkyDIYguy 6 жыл бұрын
you said you have found the problem to be parking lights. there're 4 parking lights. 2 in the front, 2 in the rear. Narrow it down to to see which one of them causes the fuse to blow. Rather than blowing a bunch of fuses as you test, you can buy a re settable fuse circuit breaker that goes in to where the normal fuse would go in. so you can manually reset the fuse every time it blows out. Once you narrow it down to the defective parking light. Then start checking the live wire that comes to that light. check the parking light switch too. Sometimes they short out inside.
@sachinnair1613
@sachinnair1613 6 жыл бұрын
Junky DIY guy thanks. Actually, a set of 25 fuses only cost me $5 so it's really not worth it. Also, I found out that the problem is the passenger side parking light. If I unplug that, the fuse doesn't blow. Should the next step be to try to trace the wire from the lights to the fuse, if that's even possible?

Your're looking for a parasidic draw not a short.Parasidic put a drain on your battery. Shorts usually blow fuses. You have two kinds of shorts for example power to power shorts which doesnt normally blow your fuse; ifyour press your horn your indicator light comes on. Shot to ground ground most definately blow your fuse since there is no resistance.

The fuses actually do NOT protect the components, their functions are to protect the installation and avoid electrical fires. (1.13) 1 - If a component draws too much current it already is bad and the only thing left to protect is the wiring... 2 - If there's a short to ground causing higher current flow than a component can stand, this short will take place before the component and the high current doesn't even flow through it. Think about it😏

A short to ground can occur after the component between 1 or more loads and may not blow a fuse.

Correct in a basic ckt unless the short occurs after the load, spikes and takes out an IC or other sensitive components or cause shunting.

max webster If the short takes place after the component current flow will be limited by the component itself to the amount the circuit was designed for.

Not necessarily. It will be limited by the fuse which is there to protect the wire not the ckt.

Typically a larger wire is required to drive your subs. I would replace the wires with larger. Thanks for the video.. well done

Why is the title of this video how to find a short? You're not finding a short, you're finding a parasitic draw

Do shorts cause parasitic draw?
@chrisjohnson4608
@chrisjohnson4608 4 жыл бұрын
No, a short is an unintended path to earth. If this happens it will create an over current situation and blow the fuse. The fault with the sub wires in the video would not cause this fault with these symptoms. It would put an amplifier into protect mode, not drain the battery.
