The mental health counselling industry is booming in India. But unqualified and untrained psychologists are offering counselling services in the absence of any regulation. Almost anyone with just a Masters degree or a short bridge-course can become a therapist. On social media platforms like Instagram and KZfaq, abundant profiles of life coaches, listeners, meditation and yoga therapists and influencers are guiding people through social anxiety, stress, depression for a fee. Though many of them are not calling themselves counselling psychologists, the services they are offering are similar to those of professional counsellors. Besides, the quality of education in psychology is also not standardised and most young counselling psychologists barely receive any training outside of textbooks. The Allied Healthcare Professionals Act 2021 meant to streamline the sector, is yet to be implemented.
