In many ways, innovation requires that one have openness to new ideas coupled with a rich understanding of older traditions and ideals. In fact, some of the most notable innovations of our time -- combining a phone and a computer, for instance -- find their roots in this coupling. And for Celtic musician Heather Dale, keeping an open ear has paved the way for her entire career.
Dale has been many things in life, from the morning manager at a coffee shop to a 'solder-jockey' at an electronics firm to a university librarian. But it was while training to become an environmental educator that she discovered the world-wide Medievalist movement -- a discovery that paved the way for her career as a recording artist.
In keeping with the Medievalist movement's aim of fostering the best virtues of the Middle Ages and Renaissance period in the modern world, Dale uses the romance, courage and nobility of spirit found in the legends of the Medieval period as a guide to write songs that highlight modern themes in old material. As she side-steps the notion that the stories of the past are irrelevant to the present, Heather's music has also done away with stylistic stereotypes, fusing traditional stories with a healthy mix of Celtic folk, world music and rock influences to produce a truly unique sound.
Dale's career as an independent musician has been full of adventures, and her pursuit of these experiences has resulted in the formation of an indie record label, Amphisbaena Music, through which she manages her recording work and her extensive touring schedule. With over a decade of stories and touring experience to draw on, Heather's presence is bound to be anything but boring!

Heather Dale is my girl! I absolutely love her. It's wonderful that she keeps the old tales alive in her music and that she's always stayed true to herself regardless of what the status quo says. I look to her for inspiration all the time. I've also been fortunate enough to see her perform live and, yes, she is just as joyous and happy-go-lucky in person as she is in this video. You rock, Heather! Keep up the good work! Blessed be!

I've liked Heather's works for many, many moons, but up until tonight, have never seen her live, or had the opportunity to hear her talk. Well now I am SO pleased to say that the more I hear her, the more I like what I hear. I -adore- her personality, and it is -such- a delight to find someone whom you like just as much outside of their music as you do in. Thank you for sharing this, and AMEN to finding your tribe. It really can make all the difference in the world. :) ♥

I like what you say...do you have the courage to be yourself or would you rather be a carbon-copy of all the other farm animals? - is what I ask myself several times a week.Keep asking yourself questions like that and eventually the old programming falls away. In the the end, you will just have to trust your own uniqueness, so you may as well start now, warts and all. You will never be better but you will become more, a lot more. cheers.

You have reminded me that when Reynard and I went to Cleftlands many years ago to attend Coronation (we were still part of the Midrealm then), we bought a science fiction book from a merchant. Several months later, we went to Cleveland for a science fiction convention and bought The Midrealm Post-Rev Songbook. One of my dreams is to have an SCA barony on an O'Neill cylinder space station. Typical TED talk, saying something obvious and presenting it as new. Don't get me wrong, I like Heather Dale's music, have been listening to her for many years, but what she says here is basically just "Network! But with the right people.", which is something every artist knows. The problems artists encounter go way deeper - what if, try as you might, you can't "find your tribe"? She found hers in college, great, that's the ideal case. Or, in the other extreme, what if a thousand others are already doing exactly the same thing and you can't seem to set yourself apart? What if you have mental issues that make networking difficult? And so on. She has a very unique and recognisable voice, she's pretty, she says she has a supportive family and a like-minded partner - these are all huge advantages that make success way more likely and that not everyone has. Plus, by her own admission, she got into the subculture that is her audience "before it was cool" and then it became fashionable when she was already sort of established in it. That's pure luck and, I guess, every artist's dream. I don't begrudge her her success at all - she deserves it, and I'm not even planning on a career as an artist, so I don't see her as competition - but she makes something very hard seem easy by giving commonplace advice that every artist must have heard a hundred times and ignoring all the other factors that facilitated her success.

[mass] noun: The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. ‘the art of the Renaissance’ ‘great art is concerned with moral imperfections’ ‘she studied art in Paris’ Music and lyrical "art" is a collaboration of sound image and lyrics; It is better classified when musicians and vocalists are labeled what they exactly do. Drake and Sinatra are vocalists, The Beatles and Jack White are better defined musicians.

That's only one definition. Art is like ice cream, there are hundreds of flavors - you still like ice cream if you only like one flavor. There's visual art, expressive art, fine art. To many, the value of art defines it, which uses time as a factor. Like, for the song that she wrote and played - the copyright for that is good for her lifetime + 75years. It may fizzle, or her grandkids might be making money off it in 100 years. Value is the key. Paintings and other forms of visual art work the same way. A paper mache garden statue might be very elaborate and pleasing to the eye, but it's not art - it's a craft. It's not meant to last, but to put outside and last less than a year. Craft the same thing out of granite? Then it could possibly be art. The debate was out for years - can color photos be considered art? Common perception was no, they fade and don't last while black and white photos were art, the silver emulsion process lasts for decades. A b&w photo today can be passed on, one in color can also be passed, but will be worthless. Now we have digital media. Can something created to a file be art? Will a thumb drive last 350 years? Will it last 20 years? Does mirroring and backing up the file count? Does mirroring and backing up unique files on a regular basis actually increase their value? In some cases, yes, but in others, no. One rule of thumb is, when a crafty creative person actually sells their crap - they are artists. Before I was an artist I used to cut my paintings up for giveaway bookmarks. This angered a lot of people and they started buying to keep my crap out of the fireplace. My "tribe" is crafty creative people. Average people don't like my stuff much, but people that can probably do what I do tend to buy, lol.

The definition you posted is only entry number 1. The other entries in the definition include musicians, singers, filmmakers and more. 2. the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance. "the visual arts" 3. subjects of study primarily concerned with the processes and products of human creativity and social life, such as languages, literature, and history (as contrasted with scientific or technical subjects). "the belief that the arts and sciences were incompatible" 4. a skill at doing a specified thing, typically one acquired through practice. "the art of conversation" The definition of "artist" also includes practitioners off all of these many arts.

I can relate. I have a very diverse amount of interests but I am also an introvert and tons of anxiety and depression. I don't have the energy to pour into a vast social life. Add to that the amount of toxic attitudes in people these days...it often turns out more hassle than rewarding connection. So, I simply do my best on my own and take opportunities as they happen. I feel like ...I dunno... like one of these days I'll stumble upon where I'm meant to be when I'm happy doing my own thing. The more you look the more you have to look. Stop looking, be You, be the happiest You...put your work out there...see what happens

If you did your best, kept your morals and principles intact and produced something of quality then there is every reason to be pleased with yourself. If what you created is well received then that is just bonus. Do what you love and you will love what you do.
