They are everywhere so now is the time to get out there and eat good healthy mushrooms from the forest! Make sure you consult and expert before you consume any wild mushrooms - I am no expert but will relate my experiences.

The middle of October last year we had a beautiful 50* coldsnap, and I went to the woods. On one oak I collected 35+ pounds of Chicken. No bugs, no fiber, just robust and perfect. Every time I cut a stream of water stained my hoodie, lol. Thanks for sharing.

I always wanted to try picking mushrooms. I think I saw chicken of the woods once many years ago, but I didn't want to risk it. Do they have any look alikes that are dangerous? Or is it safe to assume that if they're orange and growing on trees they're eatable?

There are other orange mushrooms on trees so there is a little more to it than that but Laetiporus species are fairly easy to recognize. Some people are allergic to chicken of the woods so sampling a small amount your 1st time is suggested too

I kinda think the best rule to follow is that red means danger, with bugs, plants, fungi, etc. (& orange isn't too far off. Lol Things are usually brightly colored for a reason.) There are poisonous & toxic orange mushrooms, and I think there are other mushrooms with similarities to chicken of the woods that are toxic. Idk about similar poisonous ones, but still... & keep in mind there's always the chance of an allergic reaction to anything you haven't eaten/been exposed to before. Best, like he says, to not eat/ingest anything if you aren't absolutely, 100% sure about what you're dealing with. There's still unknown species out there too. Best to do your homework. Research, ask trusted experts, & be smart when you forage. Nature is a wonderful buffet! You just have to be mindful & know what you're eating. When in doubt, don't. Lol I'm still learning, myself, & love that there's channels like this that help expand my knowledge of the bounty mother nature has to offer! Best of luck, stay safe, & happy hunting! 😉❤😊☀️🌿🐝🌼🍄🌙🌟❤

In my opinion Chicken of the Woods is fairly unmistakable once you get familiar with the key characteristics (pores, the color, the fact that it pretty much only grows on rotting hardwood, etc). Most of the look alikes I’ve seen listed are edible too, with the exception of the very poisonous Jack-o-lantern mushroom which looks very different besides the color (it has gills instead of pores, and stems)

The top looks like it was nicely burned with a blowtorch. It’s similar to the chicken of the Forrest with its size I gues but not too much else. The thickness is diffrent as well as color. I’m in New Jersey. What else could it be? They are the size of soccer balls
