In this video I go over a few things that will help you in transitioning from iron sights to a Red Dot when you decide to pull the trigger.
Why should you choose a red dot? First, many like myself have eye sight issues so a red dot will be easier to pick up over iron sights, and secondly, a red dot allows for quicker target acquisition.
The biggest question I get asked about purchasing a red dot is, is it worth it? If you are a dedicated firearms shooter, than yes. If you don't invest time in training and/or struggle with basic shooting principals, I would recommend taking a class first, however a red dot does give you an advantage. It removes the idea that you have to have two sights aligned vertically and horizontally, and replaces it with put the red dot on target and engage. It can be used even by beginners but it will not make you a better shooter. It only helps you acquire your target faster. If you have fundamental issues, a red dot will not fix those issues.

Brother, you have the best content. I’m an old Army dog hard wired for iron sights. Very confident (from years of training) but at 50 my old eyes are not the best anymore. But I just jumped on the red dot bandwagon and ordered a 407 Holosun for my EDC and this video will be part of my daily watch. Not interested in other competition lessons. Your defense focus is what I’m used to and comprehend. I’ll be searching your content for both handgun and carbine info daily. Keep it up brother..

I’m old been shooting iron sights a long time tried to transition to a dot, wasn’t doing well picking up the dot. So I removed the dot and practiced a long time with just the suppressor height sights until my presentation was spot on every time, then I put the red dot back on and sure enough I was picking up the dot upon presentation every time. Because I shot so long with irons my presentation was never right because the dot is such a change in height over bore, so starting with just the taller suppressor height sights fixed my presentation so I could always find the dot once I mounted it back on the gun.

You know what makes you really scary is how calm you are. Extremely mechanical and detached. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of that pistol. Actually that would make for a great video is how you stay zen. Something us civies could use

Initially, I struggled to pick up the dot at times. Then Sage Dynamics had a video where he said, forget picking up your front sight, just present and press out and the dot will just show up on the target and it worked flawlessly! This might not work for everyone but I think that’s exactly what Jason is saying here too.

Thank you for the video. I’m a pretty accomplished pistol shooter who’s finally trying to make the transition to pistol red dot. It’s been a slow process overcoming two decades of front sight focus. Past 30ish feet, I can see the accuracy advantage but I’m slower at finding the dot at closer distances. It’s a training issue I just need to work on.

The part about not wanting to rebuild your natural point of aim made perfect sense in terms of dot calibration distance in favor of co witness with the front sight.

Great informational video with on explaining and teaching the basic fundamentals of shooting with a red dot. This makes a lot of sense. The issue I was having when I got my first red dot was I was trying to focus on the front sight not realizing that you should not not be focusing on the target with the red dot.

That's spot on.. I even measured my HE407c x2 green 2moa dot from my front sight, that has Suppressor sights. I also really love Tu Lam's Pistol Instructions about alignment of the Dot / Pistol under your Dominant eye as you come up & press out. I'm new to Dots & that helped me tremendously 🤟

Interesting anecdote, I am right handed and left eye dominant which brought some challenges when I shot irons on pistols. I shot in a modified Weaver stance and slightly turned my head. I added a red and green dot on my two pistols and surprisingly, I always end up using the red/green dot with my right eye. When I am threat focused the optic ends up lining up with my right eye as I present and press out. I also shoot MUCH better with a dot. I have a Holosun 507k X2 on my 43X and an EPS Carry green, MRS on my Sig XMacro.

Due to failing eyesight, I installed a Burris Fast Fire on my Ruger GP 100, .357 six inch barrel. I found a company that made rails just for this pistol that could be installed where the existing open sights were attached. Eliminates the need for tapping which is strongly discouraged by Ruger on this particular pistol. It was hard as heck to find that little dot at first but it makes a big difference for bad eyes. Thank you for these pointers. They will make a difference.

This does work. Practice! I wanted a dot but didn't want to mess up my G19X Upper. So I bought the Dagger $179 FDE Complete SW4 GatorMouth Cut, RMR Milled, 4.5" threaded barrel, suppressor sights, etc. Upper for my G19X frame & love it! I also waited & bought the "HE" or "Elite" 407c x2 2moa green dot which comes w/ a 10y warranty compared to the 3yr "HS" or "Standard" vers. of Holosun Dots. Found mine on Optics Planet Black Friday & Coupon Code for $200 shipped! It was almost dead on at 25y comes with battery installed.. I also installed a O.W. Precision TAC Trigger, Trigger Spring Kit, 15lb Recoil Spring, 3lb Black Yikes connector, Polished everything & she's a sweat 2.7lb consistent shooter, no issues. I wouldn't trade it for a Staccato! That's how well she runs. Fits tight with zero play between the upper & frame also. Now I have 2 Uppers for my G19X. Stock iron sights & a Dot Upper. Cheapest way to go if you have a Glock & want an Optic. Just buy the Dagger Upper for cheap & slap whatever dot you want, just make sure you buy your correct milled pattern. Mine fits snug & perfectly!

Thanks Jason. Does your recommendation to use compressor irons apply to ALL handguns using a RD as suggested? For instance, I recently purchased a Sig P365 xmacro comp that came with high end irons and a good cutout for a RD. I placed a HS 407k (made for compacts, smaller optical design) that has a cutout for the rear iron and reasonably co-witnesses my stock irons. Consider that the barrel is only 3.1" and I carry this handgun as my primary CCW (self defense - not meant for long distance handgun shooting although it's pretty darn accurate for a compact!) My concern is that a compressor front sight on a compact handgun with a smaller optical would take up TOO much of the optical field, thus defeating the purpose of the RD...Thoughts?
@frogmantactical
@frogmantactical 6 ай бұрын
Not in all. As you stated, it can become a blinder on some guns/optics. Usually on those smaller CCW we run Shield optics. They have a built in rear sight on the optic that goes with the stock front sight. That seems to be the best option. Unless you are going to run suppressed, just stick to standard height or unless the optic requires it which typically is needed on full size guns.

Feel like an idiot for asking this, but given your experience, I’m curious. I’ve got an astigmatism and the dot in my Holosun isn’t perfect. Given that, would you still recommend utilizing a red/green dot? Seems to me that even with the issue, focusing on the target would be faster with practice. Thoughts?
@frogmantactical
@frogmantactical 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure you’ve looked into this but glasses or surgery for the astigmatism. However, the dot not being perfect will not have any bearing on your ability to hit the target. Center it and squeeze. I would say try green if your eyes strain easy which is a result of astigmatism. 🙏

You should NOT slave your red dot to your front iron sight. They are 2 independent sighting systems and what he's not taking into consideration is the various heights of suppressor sights. This would then have a great impact on where the round will impact at various distances. All of the top red dot instructors will tell you to not slave your red dot to your irons.

It doesn’t because your NPoA is with aligned sights. The fact people put on a class to teach red dots shows how silly people are. Y’all will listen to anything people say without proving their theories for yourself. 🙏

By that theory, you should slave your LVPO to the front post on your rifle then, right? I've tested many handguns with different mounting plates and different height front sights and it does impact where the round goes, especially at distance. @@frogmantactical

Can’t help but wonder how anyone survived the Wild West. I’m sure it had nothing to do with muscle memory.

It had everything to do with shooting each other in the back of the head. History shows that there were only a few paced shoot outs. The rest were point blank shots.

Sir, with outmost respect to you for what you did for our country, finding a red dot while I'm in proverbial shit in streets of LA, will most likely get me, and my partner, killed. Now, comparing to you, I'm just a Scout Boy, but still...

If you are not going to train with a red dot, then don’t get one. If you do train with it, you can find significant advantages. Red dots allow you to shoot more accurately while focusing on the target, not on your front sight.

Then don’t carry a gun. Any gun is going to point at your body to some level. It’s just how it is.

I am a lefty Okay so I appreciate your videos from a leftist point of view Okay. Since the red dot only assists you to more quickly acquire the target Okay and does not help your accuracy Okay then I don't need one yet Okay. I need to acquire the fundamentals first Okay.
