That is the way I was taught. When I worked at a fabric store ,they trained me to tear cottons and to pull a thread to cut linen. We had alot of people who wanted the fabric cut or a thread pulled then cut. Beebee's to the store could not believe we did that! Hugs and prayers

I had a manager once who yelled at me because I wasn't cutting gingham on the grainline - I sure did after that! A lot of people didn't like it when you tore it but that really is a great way to do it - fast and easy! 🤗🙏❤️

Good to know thank you Jen !I bought some fur material at Joannes and when I brought it to be cut they snipped it and tore it just like in your demonstration .I was a bit horrified but now it makes sense.lol

Back in the day, JCPenney sold fabric. They had a device that measured the fabric and then cut a snip into the edge. The salesperson would rip where cut. Now a days, no one at fabric stores wants to rip.

True - I think it's that they aren't taught about grainlines. Most don't even know how to sew.

Great tip! This is the exact same one I use for wellness as well. I wish there were an easy way to straighten the grain on a knit too and I will definitely be looking for that! 😉🤗. Thank you!

Oh man me too about knits! I need to research that and see if there's a way to find it. I'm sure there is.❤️

Thanks! That's McCall's 6545 from 1993. The buttons are just pinned on - it needs finishing (and a black skirt to wear with it!)

isn't the selvedge on the straight of grain.?
@TodayinJensSewingRoom
@TodayinJensSewingRoom 3 жыл бұрын
It is. But with something like a sheet, or curtains, or some other kind of fabric you're repurposing, you don't have a selvage edge. If you have a selvage edge you already have a straight edge. The thread-pulling trick works if you need to have a straight edge on the cut edges of the fabric.
@nancyshaner8548
@nancyshaner8548 3 жыл бұрын
What about the lengthwise grain? You need to be accurate about that to get your pattern pieces on the grain. No one talks about getting your pattern pieces on the grain, using the grain line arrow and measuring to the selvedge. Does anyone still do that?
@TodayinJensSewingRoom
@TodayinJensSewingRoom 3 жыл бұрын
I thought about including that too - but didn't because I was mainly talking about sheets. But yes, I was taught that too - use the arrow on the pattern and measure up from the selvage to get it straight. I'll try and remember to mention that next time. Thanks for the reminder!
