We’ve been noticing some signs that tomato worms have taken up residence in our garden. I’lll show you what we are seeing and how it’s helped us locate and remote these tough to spot pests.
The first sign we spotted was the droppings on the edge of our concrete patio. These will be tougher to spot in soil. The second sign was branches that had been picked clean of leaves. One or more of these tomato hornworms can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time as they are eating machines!
I had read about using UV light to find tomato caterpillars, but wasn’t sure how well it would work, but for under $7 thought it was worth a try (and might be a fun way to get the kids involved in helping look for them). To my pleasant surprise the UV light does make them glow and we were successful in removing a second wave a couple weeks after spotting and removing a few large hornworms.
