How To Find Where You Are On A Map - No Compass Required!
In this video I dive into some detail about how to locate your position on a map without using a compass, by simply by paying close attention to the ground and features around you.
I challenge myself by setting my watch to a 15 minute countdown timer, walking until the alarm sounds and then attempting to locate my position. Once I believe I have a confirmed position, I check my location with my Ordnance Survey maps app...
How accurate was I?
Watch the video to find out....

Craig is a fantastic and comprehensive teacher when it comes to navigation. He really gets you to think about all the evidence around you to form a picture of where you are at a particular time. Thanks Craig, I hope to get back in the Cairngorm mountains again soon and shouldn't get lost this time 😂👍🏻

Another Top Tip to assist you in what you have stated in your video to find out where you are without using a compass (resection) is to use a nemonic DDCRAPS.. D - Direction - Look around you and identify features / objects near to you or in the distance and note their direction from you. D - Distance - From nearby features that you can see from your position, judge their distance from you. C - Conventional Signs - Look around you to see if you can identify any objects (wood blocks, stream junction(s)) that would have a map symbol to mark their position on the map. Note their distance and direction from you. R - Relief - Note the shape of the ground around you. Identify slopes, re-entrants, spurs or saddles together with their distance and direction from you. A - Alignment - Orientate your map to so that these identified features and objects that you can see line up with the map. P - Proximity - Again, once these features / objects are identified and the map is orientated do they match up with your estimated distances. S - Shape - Repeating the "R" really; the shape of the ground with regard to where you are standing. Are you facing uphill, down hill, the type of slope or are you on flat ground.

Aaaah, good old DDCRAPS. I've been meaning to make a video on that classic mnemonic for some time now but have never got round to it.

@@TheBushcraftPadawan `When does it stop. The list jest gets longer and longer!! Forgot to add that in "alignment" do these features / objects align with each other? It's all coming back to me now through the mists within the canyons of my brain!! All good information contained within your productions. One thing to mention now is that there is no necessity to take in the Magnetic Variation in resections within the UK for a few years as magnetic field is lined up with Grid North. There is a scientific name for this phenomenon but I cannot remember it!

Great vid! Have been bingeing on your vids this weekend since I didn't get to go out... Anyhow, orienteering is SO fun! Being that I'm a professional pilot, my training to review my route before setting out and also having knowledge for destination contingencies are habits that have stuck with me in my own hiking/trekking adventures. I can usually recognize cardinal features during the different stages of my hike as I almost always research my route. It is hard for me to ditch the physical hard-copy charts which are now great supplements for electronic nav-aids these days. I can't tell you how many people rely only on their GPS electronics for orienteering. This is one of the reasons I tend to solo hike because I just enjoy that interaction with charts as part of the discovery process which a lot of folks get impatient with and would just rather "get there". I really like your vids and I see you have a ton of them on navigation. Thanks for your hard work and effort in producing a great product! Oh, just a quick note: Time/Distance calculations are a BIG part of aviation and of course are critical for safe arrival... nice integration for this as well 👍

Super interesting and common sense. The timing of the legs isn't something I had considered to estimate distance covered. Just a bit of constructive criticism if I can however on the vid- not the topic- the tutorial and delivery of the information is undermined by the music. I know this is always subjective, but I found it a tad distracting and the mix/levels of the repetitive crescendo was getting in the way. Found myself having to repeat sections to hear what you said at times. It suggests sweeping visuals/b roll not the intended content/instruction and detailed narration and personally I don't think it needed it. That aside, the message and knowledge is fantastic as always. Thanks for the video👌

Very informative video Craig, I’m going on a coddiwomble hike this weekend. I’m gonna walk randomly for a few hours then try to relocate my grid from several skills I’ve stored in my mental toolbox from your videos. I have to do these exercises alone because my mates are kamikaze hikers. They never practice how to get out of the 💩 wile the weathers on their side. I will use my watch obviously to see how close or far out I am. Keep up the great work on the Chanel Craig, it’s B appreciated and I’ve learned so much from it 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

And, each time you find your location, pencil in date & time there. Each time - you are documenting where your are still in a “found” condition, not a lost condition. On the map, it ma be a point - mark it with a dot. If there is uncertainty, mark it with a circle, oval, a triangle. Enclosing your estimated area. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Take your point about the compass although to be fair I’m sure you oriented your map to the ground before you left the car park and were aware you were heading generally East. That way you knew which way up to hold the map! Perhaps it’s worth mentioning that for the purposes of the tutorial. Also, I bet you were pacing as you went… :)
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, to be honest I didn't pace once during the time I was out. I wanted to record a video that focused solely on relating the map to the ground without confusing matters by talking about timing or pacing etc. I do have a future video planned where I'll talk about employing other techniques to help determine position, particularly when visibility is reduced and / or you're not on a linear feature.
