How to find your spirit animal is the basis for todays video. Now a lot of people love the idea have having a spirit animal to guide them through their spiritual journey, but a lot of people fear the process of doing so due to a false sense of cultural appropriation. In this video I will explain where spirit guides originated and how the cultures used them, I will also explain how it was adopted by the Wiccan and Pagan religions in the 90's, which in turn makes it more than okay to practice the utilization of your spirit animal. This will have a lot of beginner witch tips and even some great information for others practicing within our craft! It is also a very informative video not just spiritually, but factually as well! Knowledge is power is this craft. And eventually, I will be doing a mini series on spirit guides explaining individual spirit animals and what they mean as spirit guides, spirit power animals, and spirit totems. I hope you all enjoy todays video, thank you for joining us today on The Lunar Witch and blessed be to all who see!

Hope you all enjoy this video, as I had a lot of fun making it! Blessed be to all who see and thank you all here in The Lunar Witch family!

But, with all due respect, you don't cover the aspect of cultural appropriation. I'm Native, myself. You make the claim that it's not culturally appropriative because, according to you, we as "Natives" (which isn't even an accurate way of looking at Native Americans for reasons I've explained below) have said it was okay to practice this aspect of our "culture," and that it's justifiable simply because of this weird notion that we as a whole have supposedly given the okay to practice this aspect of "our spirituality," and because a White European faith such as Wicca has taken on the practice. But the very definition of cultural appropriation is taking from another culture without asking. And the reality is that we, as Natives, are actually many different tribes, each with our own distinct spirituality, and very different ways of approaching the concept of spirit animals. So to even make a blanket statement that we have somehow okayed this practice, and that it's okay to practice on the grounds that a White European faith has taken the practice on--when in reality their having done so without our permission is cultural appropriation, itself. I cover below how not to culturally appropriate in my comment below, so I won't repeat myself here. However, I will say here that it very much sounds like you talked to a bunch of White people when doing your research on this who did not take the proper time to care about our myriad tribes, each with its distinct beliefs that would have warranted true respect for us as people, and blindly believed what they said to be true, when they couldn't have been more wrong. Truthfully, as vague of a concept as you're speaking of here (in comparison to the many varied and complex ways we view the matter), this video should be done over entirely, with your saying that the concept of having a spirit animal as you are speaking of it is far different from the ways it is viewed by the many different Native faiths, who each have their own take on the matter) and should not be confused with the beliefs of any particular tribe. In that way, you would show respect, while still not taking from us without our permission.

@@noradean9775 This wasn't informative, though. It was outright robbing from my people in a manner that waters down and disrespects our beliefs entirely. I can assure you've learned nothing here about our actual practices regarding spirit animals. What's more, when as a Native I do approach him respectfully, asking for friendly, respectful dialogue to be had on the matter, he just. ignores me completely! For him to ignore us completely on a matter pertaining directly to our way of life, while misinforming you entirely on our practices, is incredibly disrespectful to us, while ultimately teaching you nothing, because you have not been given accurate teachings about our practices. He's done nothing here but disrespect us, while ultimately teaching you nothing by ignoring us and not listening when we speak up about our own practices. There's absolutely nothing cool or truly positive about that! It's just purely disrespectful, and nothing more!

@@ravenestrella2310 hey, I don’t know a lot about this subject. However, in the previous video he mentioned that he went to the local reservation and talked to some people about spirit animals there. Is it possible that different tribes just have different opinions about spirit animals being closed? You mentioned that the different tribes have different teachings. So maybe for some of them it’s not as big of a deal. I have an indigenous aunt who previously lived on the reservation but married into a predominantly white family and she has a similar opinion to the one presented in this video.

Your video is by far the best educator and comes off very authentic. If you're reading something to keep you on track I can't tell lol. Love the way you explain stuff! The only thing I would recommend is explaining the difference between just a regular spirit guide trying to work with someone versus a birth spirit animal. Some spirits come and go throughout your life, but the birth one will always be there and connected with you. Mine is also a wolf for similar experiences you faced with yours. My primarly came to me in dreams when I seldom dream of anything.

I feel like it should also be said that all animal spirits are equally powerful, no matter how high the actual animal is in the food chain. I know everyone wants Lion and Bear and Eagle and whatever, but I'm here to tell you, the right guide for you at this point in your life might be Hare or Butterfly or Cow. So do not be disheartened if you don't get a super cool predator! (I myself have received some of my most precious lessons from Bee and Stinkbug!)

Animals can be spirit guides(there for the moment) or animal totems(present your entire life, often reflects your personality or big life lessons and challenges)!! You can absolutely have more than one for each kind!! Jordana Van's channel is a GREAT channel to learn about spirit and totem animals, she goes very in depth, and interprets the animals based on characteristics, how they live and survive, and more!! She also makes note that sometimes animal totems are of animals you're scared of, they reflect aspects of you that you dont like or arent comfortable with or lessons you are scared to learn!!

That mini series would be great! I, in particular, have always been drawn to foxes. I used to volunteer at a zoo and they had a fox that would always be a hermit or attack caretaker's ankles. She would hear me come by and run to the edge of the enclosure wagging her tail at me. I was one of few people she would actually let pet her and play with her.

Thanks for making a video on how I can find my spirit animal, this information has been helpful and I am going to write that down as a note for my future record for what to do when it comes to that! I have an old raven bird earlier this summer in month of July that had came up to me on foot not flying towards me while at work of cleaning a fruit farm where I work during the season. Maybe that old raven bird is my spirit animal that had chosen me, it has been living in a nest at my house all these years and this time been wondering. It must also acted as a message from one the deities trying to reach out to me. Only one way to find out I guess right? The old raven bird was also seemed to be feeling a little sick and hungry maybe, I will need to learn more about these kind of creatures. I'm glad you had found yours and good luck to you from me for witchcraft:)

I also think that other cultures had spirit animals in a way didn't necessarily call them spirit animals, but they all all had some form of spirituality with animals which is basically your spirit animal. They would call on the power of the wolves to go on hunts. They were calling the powers of different animals to do different things which is basically a spirit animal. So it's not just related to the North American native Americans but stems all the way through Greece, Egyptian and many cultures. Now using the same totems animal totems and things like the rituals that they would do with their spirit. Animals is bear disrespectful. I agree. Just like sage, I know that everyone has a problem with sage, It's not the plant itself. And burning itbut that it's the ceremony with the shell and the feather that should not be copied. And I've spoke with a couple of native Americans about this and it's the ceremony that they don't want you to copy, not the act of smudging with white sage I was told and I quote that sage is grown wild and belongs to all of Mother Earth children by a native American. However, it is endangered but is being produced ethically in Europe now. So if you can find it being grown ethically I don't see a problem in it there you go
@stormfire1995
@stormfire1995 2 жыл бұрын
I also wanted to add I personally don't like to use white sage because it's more or less a spiritual bleach taking away positive and negative energy and leaving you with a blank slate. So if you don't remember to fill the space up with positive energy, it's just this avoid and negative energy can refill very quickly. So I prefer cedar or something like that

I agree with you. You have stated what others have also told me as well, unfortunately as you can see in this comment section, not everyone in Native culture accepts those beliefs though. But its just something that people need to open their eyes to and stop trying to gate keep. Because as you've stated, all cultures in some way shape or form, have used Spirit Animals in some way shape or form in their culture.
@stormfire1995

@@TheLunarWitch You're absolutely right, but you know it's like some people have like maybe even an eighth of native American in them and they're automatically offended by everything. Me myself have native American in my blood but I don't claim it because I was not raised in that culture. So you know if a plant is grown from the Earth then it is for the people of the planet and for the animals the creatures of the planet. And it's just like you said people like to get keep and they're really seem to be making a big deal of this cultural appropriation lately. And I don't understand magic is magic. It all comes from the same place So no matter how you do it as long as you do it Respectfully and take the time to learn about that culture and really immerse yourself in that culture. I don't see a problem and respectfully using some of their techniques. That's just my opinion. Yes it was wrong that we came over and takes. Took someone's land but the native Americans also engaged in activities of the same when they would go fight other tribes for their territories. So that is just a human mistake that we have not gotten over and got through and gotten past that all cultures have in their closets so we all have made mistakes in the past. But what is right now is if we own up to them and and make right by them which some people just can't let things go. And like you said, they like to gatekeep and that's unfortunate because that's how magic dies. That's how information dies. That's how a culture dies. Look at the Celtics who didn't write anything down who only were verbal. Pass down there information and now we know nothing about them. Hardly we know very few about them and it's the same with a few cultures just like the native American cultures. A lot of those have unfortunately gone up with the wind and it's unfortunate because there's a lot that we could learn from each other

Regarding the controversy about appropriation. I believe the Egyptians mastered spirit animals to such a degree that they believed themselves to be those animals. Norse to a degree. I'm not sure that historically the NA mixed with Egyptian culture in the trade routes of the day but NAs certainly do not own the concept. In fact most accusations of appropriation are bullshit if one studies the real history. The entire modern pagan, witchy world has appropriated my Celtic ancestry and no one really cares. Some modern "Karens" started this nonsense and I think it needs to be dropped.

@The Lunar Witch I am Native. The truth is, the Wiccan community adopted the use of spirit animals without our blessing. I usually really deeply appreciate your videos, Lunar Witch, but with all due respect, here, you are very much mistaken about the use of spirit animals in cultures other than our own being acceptable to us. In fact, I'm really confused as to why you would assume that simply because a White European faith such as Wicca adopted one of our practices, that somehow made their doing so acceptable to us as a whole, as if we are all one people. It isn't. The reality of Native Americans is that each tribe functions as its own unique nation, with its own distinct culture and spiritual beliefs. To lump us all together is like saying that Japanese and Chinese people are all one and the same since they're both Asian, when the reality is that each is its own distinction nation with its own unique culture. The same holds true for us when it comes to our tribes. Thus to even speak of Native Americans as a whole is, respectfully, a mistake. Given that the very definition of cultural appropriation is to take practices from another culture without directly asking that culture's permission first if doing so is okay, then the only way to work with another culture's spiritual beliefs when adopting the use of a spirit animal or any other aspect of Native beliefs is to ask that culture directly if working with one of their practices is okay, and then doing so only in ways directly in keeping with that culture's practices, through careful research and, whenever possible, learning from members of that culture specifically. In reality, not all Native tribes even have the concept of a spirit animal within their spiritual beliefs. You're a good man, Lunar Witch, and I appreciate that you meant no harm here, but I would ask that you please be far more careful in the future when it comes to working with other cultures beliefs, and especially promoting doing so in your videos. Truth be told, with deepest respect, I have to say I really wish this video hadn't been made, and wish it would be taken down, or perhaps remade. At the very least, I hope that your viewers will respectfully ask a Native tribe first, before adopting this or any of our practices, and then make sure they are keeping within that tribe's cultural beliefs when taking on this practice.

A very easy way to find your animal totem is by using your Vedic astrology birth chart and you can just write your birth chart and ask ai to tell what is your animal totem based on the chart and that's how I found mine and it's very accurate. Based on the Vedic birth chart provided, the animal totem that appears to be the strongest is the butterfly, due to the emphasis on transformative energies and the presence of Saturn, which is associated with learning and growth. The presence of the Moon in Cancer and the Moon nakshatra in Pushya also reinforces the idea of change and transformation, which are key aspects of the butterfly totem. Additionally, the influence of Venus and Jupiter in the chart may also suggest an affinity for beauty, aesthetics, and the pursuit of personal growth, all of which align with the symbolism of the butterfly.

Curious about spirit animals: could spirit animal change over time or could one have multiple animal spirits? Asking since my spirit animal when younger was a wolf and have shown itself through dreams and actions. One time I really love and cherish with the wolf spirit is that I was surrounded by wolves that are friendly but the alpha female got aggressive when a small dog pass by. She was in full-on attack mood and the owner (and my mom) got immediately scared because I was in range of the attacking alpha; but I surprised them (and probably scared them more) by wrapping my arms around the female's neck to hold her back and force her to look at me dead in the eyes. I was telling her "it's ok. Don't look at them, look at me. It's ok, you're ok..." and the alpha calmed down immediately. She wouldn't even leave my side and got slightly sad when I had to leave to go home. Kinda knew that wolf was my spirit animal, but recent events got me thinking otherwise. I would have dreams regarding Egypt once a while (actually had one with Anubis and Thoth) and figured I would have connection to jackel but still lean toward wolves, but now also noticed that snakes be coming lately - having spiritual attraction to snakes but also when looking at possible reptiles as companion in near future, I've been told lots of time to get a snake. Heck,. every time I held a snake, they just chill on me,. whether it be trying to drape around my neck or go as far as trying to sneak into my bag as if saying "I'm coming with you!"... Just curious since still learning...

So that is very interesting information but to answer your question yes, you can have multiple. There is some people that believe spirit guides may take shape of a different animal that best suits you at that present time to help guide you better, but ultimately yes you can have multiple spirit animals!

I grew up in an area in the UK where pegan, wiccan and druid practice was and still is accepted and openly practised and while it was never called "spirit animal" as such, this type of practice with an animal guide was alway included.

It wasn't adopted into the pagan and spiritual communities. It never belonged to the Indigenous to begin with. When white colonizers saw the animal totems of each tribe and how said tribes adopted the symbolism and imagery and characteristics of certain animals like the eagle, bear, wolf, etc. It was incorrectly understood and internalized by white colonizers as a "spirit animal, an animal I feel connected to or happen to vibe (they didn't use this word obv lol) with in the moment omg so exotic!" It nay have been also used as a tool to mock the nature-centured beliefs ans practices of the Indigenous. Either way, it never belonged to the Indigenous. It was placed onto them. ✌🏾

So in other words, you think it's okay to continue the appropriation that the pagan and Wiccan cultures began in the 90s? Appropriation is appropriation. It was never okay for Pagans and Wiccans to take our closed practice in the first place, therefore it isn't okay to continue the cultural appropriation of our practices. It's quite irresponsible to tell people that this isn't closed practice when you yourself admit it was taken from us just a few decades ago. We couldn't even use our own practices until the late 70s because the government made it illegal. So to then appropriate our cultures and spiritual practices is like spitting in the face of an already oppressed people. Bad form man.

I work along side many Native Cultures in my craft, in fact, the crystal shops I get my crystals from are owned by Natives, and I've talked to them specifically on this matter and have been told by them specifically that it is NOT by any means appropriation to practice the use of and study of Spirit Animals. So no, not bad form at all. My information is well thought out and planned before made into a video. Especially when using my resources. I have been told about the appropriation behind the use of totems and the imagery used on them in these cultures, but again, I have spoken to them specifically about it, and they do not agree with you. So we must agree to disagree here. Because you're not gunna change your views, and my information has come from people who have a native cultural background. Whether you like that statement or not.

@@TheLunarWitch Did you speak with tribal leaders, elders, medicine men, of all the tribes which use this practice? Too often non-natives will have Natives share things with them which is only meant for them, not for them to share with the public. Also, many times non-natives will ask a handful of Natives they personally know if they have a problem with non-natives adopting a native practice, and because that handful do not mind, the non-native assumes that the greater native community feels the same. So I still stand by my original statement. Ask the greater community. If you don't get a resounding yes to non-natives partaking of the practice, then listen to the greater community. Allyship, especially among the spiritual community, is often based in good intent, but execution is often muddied.

@@TheLunarWitch btw, I am a Natives as well, so you using that your information source is native was not the flex you think.

@@celestialann it's not a flex, in fact it's more of me just explaining that I'm not just talking out of my ass. I was told to even explain about the appropriation behind the totems and the carvings within your culture. There was an elder yes, that did say he didn't agree it was appropriation to utilize the use of spirit guides. But he stated that people should be aware of where it originated and how it was utilized so that it may be better respected. And that's exactly what I was going for in this video. As for medicine men, again, one who worked closely along side of the elder in the store. Leader wise, my honest answer, no. Mainly just elders and a few medicine men. There is by no means any flex here, and I understand and respect your view points. But that's where I stated we have to agree to disagree. Because there will always be people that agree and don't agree on this concept, as I was told by a few of the elders I spoke to.

@@TheLunarWitch yes, I did explain the concept of a handful of differing views. The definition of cultural appropriation is: the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of the customs, practices, ideas, etc. of one people or society by members of another and typically more dominant people or society. The reason I point this out is because your initial reply was riddled with an undertone of entitlement. If more Natives tell you this is not okay than the ones who told you it was okay, would your opinion change? Or would you only put weight in the view that backs your desire to use something from a culture that is not your own?
