My grandma made me a quilt and hand tied it. She brought the tails through on the other side of the quilt (the back side) so the ties were a color that made the plain back of the fabric look more punchy and they didn't detract from the pattern of the pieced side. Thanks for the great tutorial. I need to try this now!

Excellent tutorial, Nikki. I had to laugh when you said your favorite part is the hand sewing of the binding because that’s my favorite too. Relaxing and you know it’s the final touch to your project! Your EPP quilt is beautiful...I admire your tenacity with such a big project.

Thank you for this amazing tutorial, I said to myself out loud today "Okay got the hexies done now what?" looked on youtube and voila there you were! I have used a single quilt cover that I bought from the charity shop for a couple of pounds, one of my mom's single bed sheets and will now piece it all together and have a memory of her in the quilt. Thank you for giving me the confidence to do the next stage, you're a great teacher.

Spray adhesive is great! We have 101 in Australia. No smell, doesn’t stain the fabric and holds the layers together while you stitch it. Can spray it from the middle out and it is done! It’s repositionable and you can do it with the quilt thrown over the ironing board. Pin the middle with a few pins and then work each way with the quilt supported by a table behind the ironing board. Keep smoothing as you go . Lots of KZfaq ideas with methods for it. Great for those of us who can’t get down on the floor.

When working on the floor, I have found putting my cutting mat under the layers helps me not to pin or tie the quilt to the carpet!

This was excellent. I've recently become obsessed with English paper piecing (I'm a spinner/knitter/weaver), though I used to build simpler little quilts by hand when I was very young. This filled in the gaps for what I was missing at the end. I can't wait to get started!

Excellent video, many thanks for the clear instructions, it’s been a real help on my very first EPP lapghan. I did have a problem when it came to zig-zagging the ‘sandwich’ around the edges; three times I did it and removed it each time as the three layers were slipping and were decidedly skew at the end. So I gave up and basted it by hand before attaching the bias binding. Then I had a lightbulb moment: some time ago I purchased on one of those Chinese sites a Walking Foot for my sewing machine, so I set it up and had a little practice - and it worked perfectly!! It had cost me peanuts to buy, at the time I didn’t know whether I would use it but it seemed like a good idea, and now I’m really glad I did! Solved the problem of slippage completely!

If you didn't cut the ends first you could use 1 inch and the whole length to tie a knot, only wasting around 1/2 an inch per tie. Leaving the long bits is for the method shown on jordan fabrics tutorial, of multi ties set at once.

I was taught 40 years ago, to pin in the center and smooth as I pinned from the middlebpin out . Much easier to me.

I just wanted to share that if you tie bf you cut the needle thread, you can save a ton more thread, bc you’re not wasting any length on the second tail. 🌷

I have&a super king size I am doing I am lost for best way to quilt it. Love you idea if hand, as I didn’t think quilting as much was a nice idea., sending it away to have it done was so expensive, the quilt has been done in liberty fabric so it would have made the quilt very expensive. So a massive bit of advice thank you.

Glad I found this video. I have had my quilt ready for borders but can’t quite take the next step. Deciding to trim off the edging strait or following the hexagon pattern. I do like the idea of tying instead of machine quilting. I have tied baby quilts for years. I usually do not clip my thread but use the long length to help stabilize the embroidery thread as it makes tying quite easy. If you do the first wrap as a double it will hold your tie in place. Take the short end wrap thru circle 2 times and pull closed then wrap again to finish the tie and then clip the ends. I had a doctor show me how to do this when stitch up a cut. (I was a nurse) it doesn’t pull the material as much. Thank you for the video

Chris Hunt North wales lovely Epp!. I alas found the polyester craft wadding lost its loft when put in a tumbler dryer. I now buy 80/20 costs more but doesnt lose its loft.

I’ve always been a relaxed quilter rather than a rule follower, especially with hand sewing. Life is too short for quilt rules !

I would start with hexagons, with diamonds you end up with extra ears of fabric at the points (which is fine but may be more tricky for a complete beginner)

I've just recently got interested in EPP. I'm trying to work around my disabilities and do alot of hand sewing in my recliner now. Standing is almost impossible. So crawling around on the floor lol. I would never get up. But I was thinking if I could pin all the layers to a design wall I could smooth it down and slowly work my way down the quilt. Really enjoy your channel. Keep up the great video's.

You could also get a friend to help with the trickier bits for you! I have also used a table to layer and pin so that might be easier than the floor. Hope you manage to get something to work for you. Best of luck

Thank you for this fab video, Nikki. I've been sewing my first hexagon quilt ever since watching your other EPP video and was wondering how to finish it (not that it's anywhere near being finished yet!). With the ties, do you pick a neutral colour and just use the same throughout the quilt or do you use several colours and try to match the ties with the colour of the hexagons?

You could do whichever you choose! I prefer to pick one colour, neutral or clashing and stick with that. Changing colours means rethreading or switching needles which can take time. I’m currently seeing a solid colour rainbow he is quilt and I will probably have to match the colours on that one 🤣

Crochet cotton also works real well for hand tying. It is strong and comes in different colors.

Thanks so much for this video, I have been looking forward to it since I watched your EPP video a few weeks ago and given it a go. I have made a make-up bag with my first small piece of patchwork but would like to give a quilt a go - perhaps one a bit smaller than yours for a first attempt though! I was really daunted by the thought of machine quilting, so I like the hand tie method you use. How long would you say it takes you to hand quilt and bind a quilt of the size you show in this video?

It probably took me a couple of evenings to hand toe it and maybe 2-3 hours to bind (mainly because I choose to finish the binding by hand)

Thanks very helpful , would you please give me a bit of advise . I am using a Ned weight stabiliser instead of paper for the backing of my hexies . It is a 7ft x 7ft quilt I am making . So my concern is if I put a wadding backing in as well it will become to thick . And of course hard to pop into the washing machine . With having two cats that think our bed is theirs I do tend to wash the quilt a lot. Well the one I gave at the moment . Do you think you could please give me you advise for the finishing on this . The stabiliser is maybe about as thick as hexiform, however to have done in this size the cost would have been very silly I am unsure if I should complete this as hand tied or take it to a long arm quilter to get best results I would appreciate all the tips you can give me . Thank you .

Thanks, all good till the binding. Those mitred corners look scary tbh 😬but good idea to try on a small sample. I just wondered Nikki , do the mitred corners stay loose on the reverse, just anchored at the bottom but not sewn along the diagonal at all?

Yes see across the diagonal, just a few stitches on top of one another, grabbing both sides. It’s enough to hold it securely. Practice on a small piece first but I promise it’s not too scary 🥰

I'm not as far in my hexie work I'm not even sure how big I want to go. I use mostly scraps but for variety I also have cut some of bigger cotton fabrics. But I don't think I'm going to do a full quilt maybe a pillow case or so for the beginning. I also don't have a lot of different cotton fabrics so there will be quite some repeats.

Are all of your hexes exactly same size? I've make quite a few, but downloaded two different size hexes and would like to use all of them in one pillow cover?

They only fit together if they are the same size. Another option would be to separate areas of different sizes with a boarder perhaps? Or make them into large squares and sew together on the machine?

You should start in the middle. Polyester wadding will wash well but we be very sweaty to use

It’s just a matter of preference on where to start. I’ve done it both ways and prefer my method. Wadding is obviously dependant on where you live and average temperatures. I’m asthmatic so prefer the polywadding. Use whatever is best for you 🥰

I loved the first part but was sad to see you use shop bought bias binding Having put so much work into your quilt. using, this, which is made from such poor quality fabric and only a single layer, will result in a binding that will wear out much more quickly than your quilt.

Not in my experience I’ve made a lot of quilts and always used shop bought binding. Use whatever makes you happy
