Finishing musical projects in any DAW is a challenge, In this video I go over 4 reasons why you should consider committing your tracks to audio early and often. Taking options off the table is a great way to focus on the big picture, which is all your listeners will hear anyway ;)

I remember Ill Gates. once saying “just move quickly from one sound to another. Unless you want to be like Tipper and spend 100 hours on every tune and have no life.” In that moment I decided I wanted to be Tipper. But 10 years and lots of joint pain later I think I’m ready for this video.

Yeah I really did spend wayyyy too much time on one sound. And I used to leave EVERYTHING on the table and it also took me 4 years to make an album lol. This video now that I think about it is definitely an introspection.

I like the “getting things done” principle in everything for life, if you can do it in five minutes do it now, if not write it down and put it on a to do list, review the to do list often and if something appears for a long time then it really wasn’t that important in the first place so forget about it and remove it from the list….

I've started to always group the Midi + Recorded Audio, then turn the MIDI off and only return to it once I have a new idea or need to change sth drastically - definitely has Pros and Cons but as I'm not yet on my Sound Design End Level, this works quite nicely for me.

This is such a good advice. I just recently started to commit to audio more often (finally…) and it’s such a relief. No regrets so far. Too many choices available isn’t always good for creativity

This video has come at a really convenient point. I have started thinking about comitting more things to audio but as you said have always been afraid if I want to tweak. I realise now that I rarely tweak and if I do I can always go back to the previous version grab that and bring it into the new one. Thanks!

I've always bounced most tracks to audio, and still take weeks or months to finish a given tune. Never made a difference for me. I actually work better these days with my new M1 without the need to bounce down, perhaps there's an ebb and flow to these things too. In terms of finishing, my issue has always been consistency and lack of deadlines.

In my day job, a deadline or other restraint, like budget, would force us to commit and finish... but with my music hobby / home studio I don't have these constraints... and the modern DAW and unbelievable amount of VST options and tweaks is both overwhelming / inspiring but ultimately, a time stealer. I wanted to be a musician but feel forced to be a techie. Being a music techie steals time from being a musician and vice versa. Wearing so many hats has to be a problem to finishing anything. When that stress to finish takes away the fun, I usually ditch the project... which is plain daft. But ultimately it's a hobby for me, and very few people take any notice anyway. ... Maybe I should try the "unplugged" route. Just me and my guitars / keyboards. That way I actually feel like a musician again.

My laptop is a bit old an struggles, bounce downs are the only option for me. I normally keep the main midi parts on a “dead track” so I can do replacement instrumentation or layer later.

This is why I love freezing tracks. It's a form of commitment, allowing me to move on, yet I can still drag out the midi onto a new track if I feel like changing it.

Great video! Thank you! A few weeks back I showed a demo of a song of mine to a sound designer friend of mine. The song had, to my mind, kind of ok keyboard sounds (that I thought I'd definitely revisit) and the vocals were a first pass of fresh lyrics (one take recording just to have an idea how they would sound). So I had a draft of the first verse and chorus. My friend didn't know my process up until this point, he just hit play, and said "up until this point (the end of the first chorus) it's perfect. Don't change a thing." This got me thinking how me fiddling around with sounds might not always be where the song pays off. If the idea is solid, you can get away with a lot "less". Learning to let go has been my biggest challenge, so this was an eye opener for me. Still, I will most likely tweak this song, and all the next ones. But instead of trying to make everything "perfect" I'll tweak because I want to learn and because I'm curious of the process.

I like to use resampling and set up VST instruments as though I’ve physically taken a synth to a studio, that way I can also sift through presets and such without setting up wild automation

Love this mindset and approach. Was just contemplating an upgrade to an m1 macbook air but realised a more mindful utilisation of my 2015 i7 16GB Macbook Pro will probably more than fulfil my needs. The longer I work on a project and the more complicated and CPU intensive it gets, the song does not necessarily improve (and often, the opposite.). I started to commit to rendering audio loops into session view and then focusing on composition / arrangement. Way more fun and I can always drop the backup Midi / FX chain channels as frozen and disabled channels into a 'graveyard' group if I am getting cold feet about the commitment. 99% of time they never get unfrozen.

Was thinking of upgrading my gigabyte p15 laptop 2016 i7 6th gen 16gb ram laptop but this approach to making music totally makes sense. Most people I see using Ableton on stage live have mainly audio tracks with minima effectsl chains and they use external fx units like guitar pedals to further sculpt their sound in a live situation

@@nickykeys3423 @nicky Keys Totally. For live perfomances I am trying to mostly use audio loops, maybe 2 or 3 plugins but I use the Elektron A4 and Digitone as external synths / FX boxes to reduce the CPU load and laos have something tactile to play with and manipulate on the fly

Nice the “graveyard group” ha! I always turn those tracks colors black and disable everything and drag them to the bottom of my set. Never thought to call them the graveyard group nice one.

One of the reasons to turn midi track to audio is when this track uses some external plugin. Plugin update may break at least instrument number (that happened to me when I updated Syntronik 2.0.1 to 2.0.2), or plugin can crash Ableton (as it was 5 times in a row with Ableton 11 and Syntronik 2.0.1). But even in this case I will leave midi track and just add it's audio copy. Midi rules for me. Even if I will not ever change this track, I may need just to copy it to another project. Audio is unchangeable itself (except some external changes).

This also helps against analysis paralysis. I have always the issue that I don't know WHEN I should commit myself. So even this is an decision problem for me lol.

Funny... it's 4 am right now for me !!! I have seen so my tips and tricks on finishing projects.... they ain't worked on me yet! Let's hope this one does, as I have an overwhelming amount of unfinished projects. I think fundamentally I get distracted by so much choice but also inspired by a new sound, new VST or feature ....HELP! I do think the limited options and a deadline is better.... like the old studio days... you got X time to make an album with only a few guitars, one drum kit and that yamaha synth in the corner. Go !!! (I wonder if Sir Paul McCartney is distracted with new tech now?)

But when would be a good time to be committing to audio? If i need some synth chords at the start of a song, there is a good chance I'll be needing them again in the song too, and preferably with some variation in their melody. I can imagine this working great for any one shots, and pad/background sounds... Maybe another approach could be, to be committing more important things like leads early on too, but keeping your midi channel with all the processing as inactive and just use the rendered version. Incase you need a melody variation later on, you can still use your midi channel to bounce another midi clip.

That's how it can be done. But since the goal is to get your ideas down quickly anyway, you could lay down the melody for all parts, then bounce it and carve your decision in stone. That's why it could be helpful to know your song structure up front and to do a rough outline with time markers or on paper, so you can create all necessary variations in one go. I do this for every main element of a song and of course it gets easier over time. It's a great way to train your imagination and, with enough practice, compose entire musical layers in your mind. And I'm not exaggerating. It's like mind chess, but mind composition, if you will. Good luck and keep at it.

Easiest way to train yourself to do this: produce on an old ass computer. You will be bouncing in place like an animal, doing “mix downs” like you’re on a four track reel to reel lol
