Brilliant and well done Jeff. I am repairing a 2 story deck that originally installed all wrong. The ledger 16' board was even sparatically nailed to the house!! Hi Jeff, I just subscribed, I've watched a few vidoes so far from your channel and I have to say, you are amazing, down to earth, real and sincere. And it's nice to have Canadian content, awesome. So, I've watched this particular series a few times, I live in Nova Scotia and I'm about to rip out my front deck, it's actually a covered veranda, substructer is fine, just repalcing the deck boards, wraping my 4x4 posts and replacing the stairs, railings and adding railings to the stairs; it's 40 feet by 5.5 feet. This set of videos has given me the confidence to tackle my project. even the rep at HD suggested the tape you suggested, and as I'm using a water seal, to just add it to the joists and substructre, and why not, this needs to last several more years. Wish me luck....

I cannot find skirt boards at Lowes, any recommendations?
@11soWoo
@11soWoo 4 жыл бұрын
Steven Foster they are never termed or coined that way. Usually people use wood lattice or pvc trim board. Heck, masonry, vinyl, plastic, etc. Use any type of wood really, as long as you are pleased. If you’re leaving 1” gap above ground, you can opt to get treated lumber rated for above ground and so forth for ground contact. Generally, your deck requires ventilation especially all 4 sides for proper drainage and breathing room, especially for treated lumber, so I don’t recommend closing up all the gaps to your deck hence the invention of lattice. Just make sure it is either flush with the top frame of your deck or have the deck boards overhang a bit over like he does. Flushing with the top is aesthetically pleasing but can have a lot of problems later so its better to overhang like he does. Notice he has additional framing for skirting and the bottom rail for framing must be same size as the rim joist otherwise it would be slanted and not plumb. So if your rim joist/end joist is 2x8, you can use any 2x? For the bottom frame and you be set. Hope that helps.

Awesome Just awesome, you make even the hardest parts of building a deck look easy. My question is, Can you really get a good looking deck by decking first and then attaching rail post on the outside ream joist, or should I do as you did?

The reason why the skirting boards are cut at an angle is for the water to drain more easily in the bottom and not be drawn into the wood. The short side should of course turn inward. Greatings from Norway 👍🏻

I love your videos, the way you teach is so easy to follow and to understand. I learned a lot from you. Keep teaching us. I'll build a deck later this summer, and i'll rewatch all of your videos. I have a question that is not on the decking subject, but if you could have any advice i would very much appreciated. I have a home that is build from modular containers, with sandwich panels as the wall. The sandwich is 50mm thick (metal-foam-metal). In my bathroom on the inside i had mounted osb 10mm and drywall 12.5mm, and now i am at the point to hang my 60 liters electric water heater. The question is what kind of fasteners should i use to be sure that the water heater doesn't move around? On the exterior i'm coming with 200mm insulation.

I would screw right into the frame of the modular box, just like you did when you attached the osb.

The code which I have seen most commonly used here in the US requires that the railing has a hand grip. Flat 2x4s or something similar are not allowed. It would be great if you could do an addendum to show how to add something like that. I'm currently in the process of building my stairs, which definitely look like someone new built them. However, they're not without some visual interest and I am trying to figure out how to put something aesthetic for the hand grips.

Great series! Im about to tackle a 20x12 deck, on an elevated bungalow, with walk out basement. It will have stairs at the end that run parallel with the length of the deck(20ft) With this size deck what size joist to you recommend for the frame? Also, i will attach the back of the deck, to the rim joist of the home, so i will cut back the aluminum siding to do this. Is it best to attach a seperate ledger board to the home, then attach the frame to that? Or just go ahead and attach the frame to the rim joist, eliminating the separate ledger board? Now for the stairs i will probably allow for a 3ft x 3ft landing at the top of the stairs. When i make my box frame i will be 20ft long at the home side x 12ft wide for 17ft. The additional 3ft in length i will need to be 15ft wide. Do i frame this as one, or do i frame it in 2 sections, then attach them together? 17x12 3x15 Hopefully im not confusing you with all this... Thank you kindly! And im located here in Eastern Ontario, so i will have to comply with our codes

Great series! I recently bought a house and the backyard deck looks like it was made by someone who doesn't watch your videos... I'll probably give it a nice refresh like this next summer - and I'll use these videos as a guide.

Hey bud really look forward to watching your videos, get great tips to improve or figure out how to in every job. I'm coming from Australia but regardless I 'm wondering what framing gun and nail thickness should it be capable of firing?

Cheers to Australia, most framing guns are designed for the standard nail in your country. Just be sure to check with your local dealer.

Great video. I am building a deck. I need railings and a ramp. I want to put a privacy screen up on one side instead of a rail. Any suggestions?

Hi, you mentioned something about being in direct sunlight then you should use lattice...we're just doing a deck that gets afternoon hot sun so I'm just wondering why? Thanks...my husband hates lattice for skirting...so...lol.
