Rod, I've watched most of your videos and find them most helpful. I'm getting a little too old to wade aggressively for steelhead fly fishing. Over the past two years I have been transitioning into float fishing. You speak very clearly and explain what you are doing well. As an old retired school teacher I appreciate that. Keep doing what you are doing.

I fish streams, ponds, and lakes. When using lures which aren't designed to go down to a specific depth (such as spoons, spinnerbaits, etc), I always use a float so I can set them to consistently run at the depth I want them to. I've been doing that for a long time now.
@paulweezy138
@paulweezy138 7 жыл бұрын
Thibeinn i just rigged a setup for my local pond with a baby simon at the end of a floro leader below a swivel with a small slip bobber with stops top and bottom. I think it should do well except the trout at this pond tend to be lazy. i have hooked up allot with a standard slip rig with small jigs but i want to expand my methods a bit. Im going to have to play with split weight a bit to see what makes the spoon run correctly.

Love the video rod, I tried my best today to use this technique on the vedder. We caught and released one non hatchery coho and a nice rainbow trout while losing the others we had on the line. Could I ask what rod and reel you are using in this video? I would love to get a level wind set up for the river.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+Derek Pole The reel is a Shimano Chronarch low profile baitcasting/levelwind reel. These reels have a smaller spool capacity which I think is more than enough for targeting fish in the Vedder, even for chinook salmon. This way I don't end up with excessive amount of line on the bottom half of the spool which never gets used. The rod used in this video is a custom built rod, 10'6" rated 8 to 12lb, but you can find rods in similar specs quite easily. Shimano Convergence has a couple of models which are around the $100 mark or less, or Gloomis IMX if you are looking for a higher end model.

The instructor in the first few seconds of the introduction is April Vokey. You'll be able to find lots of information on her by Googling. ;) She does not do fly casting lessons very often now, if any. That particular event took place in Chilliwack.

Hi Rod, I've been float fishing from the river bank for a while now. The biggest drawback is getting snagged from the river bottom on boulders, weeds, etc. What techniques would you recommend to get the hook unsnagged? Or could you perhaps make a video on unsnagging. Thanks!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+Will Man There really isn't one perfect way to free your rig from a snag. The hook can be embedded in a branch, which would be almost impossible to detach. The weight could be wedged between pebbles, then it'd be easy to free. The best way is to avoid getting snagged up in the first place by not fishing too deep.

Hi Rod. It's the fishing beginner here again. About Pink Salmon, when can they be retained? I noticed that people keep on releasing them whenever they caught them on Vedder River.

The pink salmon season is over this year. There wasn't an opening for retention in most fisheries due to low returns.

whats a good brand of clear floats? the ones I bought were pretty shitty and leaked after a few casts. still nothing like retrieving and maneuvering spoons/spinners/worms with light tackle though. slide it right under log jams in front of coho's face for best results.

coincidently, I went out fishing today on the Vedder for the first time. did spinning with lures and I can attest that it definitely works and you get bites, but beware of Snag City. I lost 5 lures so it may not be the most effective way to fish so this method will be what i'm trying next. was this out at the Vedder too, Rod?

+Steven Vail The Shimano Chronarch? I love it! I generally prefer low profile baitcasting reels for this type of fishing than a larger round baitcaster. This particular one is the higher end model by Shimano so it's very smooth as expected, and with proper maintenance after each season, they can last forever. This one I've had for four seasons now and still working great. The only thing I probably don't like is the colour lol... Dark metallic, silver are my preferred colours.

@Kremlin60
@Kremlin60 8 жыл бұрын
+JeremyPiz It's from the float/float stop to the hook/bait/lure
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+JeremyPiz From float to the hook. Keep in mind that the hook/lure/bait will float up a bit, depending on how strong the current is and how much you hold back the line when it is drifting downstream, so that float depth has to be adjusted a few times to get it right if you are fishing a new spot.
@JeremyPiz

Hi Rod - Would a Gibbs Koho spoon work using this method and if so what size for trout would be best?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, Gibbs Koho spoons are pretty heavy casting spoons and not meant to be fished under a float. It is also mainly a salmon lure, too big for trout. You're better off using a Gibbs Croc spoon in the 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4oz size for trout.
@harbeh
@harbeh 8 жыл бұрын
will this technique work for a spin casting reel?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+Harvey Labro You can use the first and third technique with a spinning reel, but it'll be difficult to feed the line out smoothly with a spinning reel for that second technique.
@thomasjtn4232

+Fishing with Rod you can open the bail and keep your thumb on the spool just like the baitcasting reel- and then set the hook with your thumb on the spool and close the bail afterwards.

@Kempem
@Kempem 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Rod, for this technique, how crucial is it to have a long rod (10ft +)with a level wind reel? I want to give this a go with my 7 ft spin cast. Quite the difference, but wondering you've tried it before! thanks!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 8 жыл бұрын
+Matthias Kempe The longer 10ft+ rod definitely gives you an advantage as you can keep more line from the rod tip to the float off the water. This creates less drag and allows you to have better hook-sets. Having the level wind reel is also important as you need the free spooling function to feed the line out smoothly as the float drifts down. You certainly can open the bail of your spinning reel and keep feeding line that way but you're going to have too much loose line and find yourself missing most of the bites.

+AkinToMeatloaf I use Frogg Toggs waders. Check them out, pretty awesome. They are cheaper than other breathable waders, a little thicker so a bit more durable, and they are also a bit wider so more space for the legs to move, more comfortable.
