Got one on my '95 Electra Glide Classic. Installed by the previous owner, because the start switch doesn't work. Not sure if it is the switch or the wiring. Doing some deep maintenance, will find out.

Could be ignition coil or starter relay. Starter relay is a cheapest fix. I replaced both and have no issues using my actual starter switch. Good luck.

I'm totally confused. How does this have anything to do with a "non start" after hot engine? Mine (96) starts runs for a while, then quits. How does a solenoid switch solve my problem? Why would the bike (during a hot engine) care about where it gets started from?

It was in hindsight a coincidence. The real issue was the starter relay, I beleve. Replacing the ignition coil didn’t hurt either. Overall, those two things have the bike starting consistently on first or second attempt every time. Your issue sounds like a different problem that i had with this bike. That required replacement of the regulator rectifier. Easy fix.

@@hoffguitar I just pulled off the coil and tested it and the 1st stage was totally throwing wacky numbers. So I'm hoping that is the ONLY issue. Thanks.

So it acts as the only starter button? The one on the handle bar doesn’t work then?

@@poohbear1647 That’s correct. I have since replaced the ignition coil, spark plug wites and starter relay and the bike does now start from the handlebar switch!

@@hoffguitar thanks. I just pulled mine out from the back of the garage and beginning to work on it (89 Ultra). Now if I can just figure out why oil is gushing out my air cleaner 😫.

@@poohbear1647 1989 still had the oil tank above the oil pump. If it sat a period of time, and the check valve in the oil pump doesn’t seat properly, it let oil flow into the crank case. Upon start up that oil’s gotta go somewhere and it’s gonna come right out of the air cleaner. This is not unusual for older Harleys. Make sure you check and refill the oil level as necessary.

Yep Renee, always try to fix the problem. No detour if possible. I was just going to write that probably the starter relais went poeffff. Aside from the clicking that seems to be the only sound they ever make.
