How to fix a speaker with coil rub, where the voice coil comes in contact with the magnet. This is often the case with speakers which have sat for extended periods (decades or more), causing the voice coil to droop into the magnet. In my case, the magnet had shifted after dropping the speaker and began to rub.

In many cases the the surround or spider has sagged causing misalignment and rub. As well as the fix shown here (a good fix BTW) you might find that mounting the speaker in another orientation will equal-out the sag or distortion. Commonly with front mounted speakers like shown here, you can rotate them 180 degrees and the coil alignment will improve; reducing or eliminating rubbing.

If I rotate it 180 degrees, how long would you recommend leaving it upside down?

That's what I was going to suggest, just turn the speaker upsidedown first & see if that stops the rubbing.

You absolute legend!!! Monitor audio gold 10 speakers worth a lot of money, one was crackling, I watched this video, realised it was rubbing in the middle like yours, a little fidget straitened the center of the cone boom 💥 worked like a dream. Thank you so much !!!

Clever fix. I have a Pioneer 12" for my car and it started making a lot of noise. I've heard that it can be from subs sitting facing outward like most home speakers are. Ideally, they face up or down in vehicles and in home theater situations (down-firing being the best in most cases) but that's not always possible with most home setups. The heavy use combined with an outward-facing stance can cause the coil rub. You'll know it's coil rub if you can increase the volume output on your sub and the noise doesn't get proportionately louder (it may get a bit louder from more vibration but it's not nearly as audible at high volume as it was at low volume). One way I semi-fixed my coil rub (for the time being) is by standing it upright and letting it play. The coil rub went away for the most part after about 30 seconds of playing music through it. I've seen people use rubber bands to wrap around the coil behind the speaker and create moderate tension by wrapping it around and anchoring it. When you lightly pull it in the correct direction it removes the contact between the speaker and the coil(s) and you get the same effect. However, I'd recommend the way TeDubbs goes about it because that's closer to a permanent fix.

Thank you for making this! Mine didn't have screws and I needed to pry and wedge it back into place. This video helped conceptualize the problem and solution for me.

THANK YOU, my issue was slightly different (but also a dropped speaker) since my speaker is smaller and no allen bolts to loosen ( it has glue instead) but when you mentioned the magnet, and loosening it, I noticed it wasnt looking straight, with a little bit of bending it seems to have completely stopped rubbing and works great.

If the back plate is glued you can heat the plate up with a hair drier and GENTLY tap the plate into position so don’t rub. Worked for me.

Thank you! Someone gave me some Boston Acoustic tower speakers and one 7" woofer was doing exactly this. Looked and saw the magnet was bent off center. A little leverage with a screwdriver on the housing and -- boom! -- good as new! Thanks, mate!

Unfortunately it didn't. :( You're idea is still great, the speaker I need to adjust doesn't have a way to loosen the magnet though. Going to have to re-foam the suspension and re-center it. After checking it out, speakers with this problem DO NOT need a full re-cone. They just need the foam surround replaced and re-glued to where they're centered correctly and don't rub. Word to the wise. Kinda pissed at my speaker "guy"....

Ugh... idk if my first comment went through... Hopefully this will work on extremely old speakers too. I’ve got an old zenith radio tabletop that I patched but still sounds blown. The speaker is already fragile enough since it’s old paper...

Could this happen to a car sub? mine sounds very similar to that one and is quite annoying to hear. would it be better to buy a new one as I only paid like $30 for the entire woofer.
@TeDubbs
@TeDubbs 6 жыл бұрын
I could happen, sure. Nothing wrong with just buying a new one if that's what you want to do but remember that you've got nothing to loose by taking it apart at this point if its not working properly. I would say give it a shot, you'll learn something new :)
