Small tip to always have a master link on you: they've usually got convenient holes in them a keyring fits through, so take the ones from your old chain, when you are replacing it anyway, and put the two pieces around your keyring. If you ride with a lock, put it around the keyring for your bike lock, if you don't, use the keyring with your house keys you take on your ride anyway. In my experience (only 2x luckily) a broken chain tends to snap on the master link anyway, so that's your fix done. Still carry a chain rivet tool though. The holes in the master links might wear out a little bit on your keyring, but it's a temporary fix anyway.

I've got a memory issue lol I landed a pretty nice kids gf tyro and it came with no chain so I don't have it to measure measure where to break my chain. I know there's a combination of gears that you can use for measuring but for the life of me I can't remember the gear setting. Is it the biggest chain ring and the smallest sprocket on the cassette?
@crabtrap
@crabtrap 2 жыл бұрын
@@dennishermey5873 if its a geared bike; put chain on biggest front and biggest rear. your derailuar cage should be pulling forward a bit, you want it to have 'some' spring travel left in that big/big gear combo. after that; mark the chain links to be removed and youre done

I really have to say, Thank You! I just happened to choose a random video (your video) to show my 7yo. daughter how to do her own search & learn to fix new things by herself. She loves the bikes/dirt bikes etc., so I thought, this video will do, & do it did! Now myself, I'm a fix it all kinda guy, so I already know how to do all that... (No, I do not know everything, AT ALL! No one does! That just sounded bad! lol I get paid to figure out & fix pretty much anything & everything that's thrown at me...) Sorry, I digress, back to my original point... Well done, great video! It was shot very well, well thought out, to the point, clean/clear, easy to follow! You went over things that I definitely would have forgotten to teach her! So, Again, Thank You & God Bless! Safe & Happy Riding!

I carry assorted master links in the breakdown kit at all times . Shimano doesn't recommended using them yet their supplier K.M.C. recommends & sells them on cards blister - sealed . Connex Wippermann chains have master links included in their cardboard retail boxes .The pre - stressing of the newly installed link can also be achieved with the inner chamfers on chain link pliers , spreading the handles from the inside faces as you do so using most of your hand & a knuckle on an adjacent finger or thumb . If another rider needs help , I will supply & fit one for free including tutorial if required as a kind deed . Cadel Evans said to me recently that it is a good gesture on my part .

Does using a connecting rivet to repair a chain always weaken it? You would think it would be the same strength as just installing the chain with the provided connection rivet as long as the two ends of the chain you connect after removing the damaged link aren't damaged.
@sydmclay
@sydmclay 4 жыл бұрын
And the same deal for a master link.
@parktool
@parktool 4 жыл бұрын
When a rivet is removed on a modern chain the peened end comes shears off. That peened end was peened and then hardened at the factory. You cannot do that procedure in the field so a new pin is needed and a new pin is slightly larger and has hardened ends to help it get to the same strength but it will not match the strength of a rivet that came from the factory installed. Master links are rarely an issue anymore. For awhile they would come undone but manufacturers have changed tolerances and gotten the links to work extremely well.

@parktool
@parktool 6 жыл бұрын
Stiff links can be caused by the chain making a bad shift under load and the tooth from one of the cogs actually marring the metal. This gives it the stiff link. You need to find the link and figure out if it is the inner or outer plate and replace it or I have actually popped the rivet and filed the marred metal a bit to make it free again.
