Purchased a cheap Temu knife and it came with almost no detent shocker. Followed these steps and it is now 80 percent better. I feel now more comfortable to do this on my better knives if needed. Thanks, you the man!!!

You are the man. I tried this fix with my kizer roach that was super sticky and now it is so smooth. Opening up the detent hole fixed it. With your tips, I feel more confident buying some open box knives with issues I think I can fix. Appreciate it.

Beautiful, video needed to be made! Such an easy fix, I tune half of my knives this way to get it perfect. Personally I like using the slowest speed on router or even use bit by hand first to make sure I don't go to far. Works well for me to check if ball drops in hole while knife is completely disassembled.

Awesome little tip the one thing I would suggest is only doing a bit at a time. Tiny adjustments along with only removing tiny amounts of material is the trick to this fix. You can always remove more but can't replace it. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

What's good Jerad?! I have had issues with the detent ball seizing up or a defect on the surface. Some very specific instances I have used baking soda to loosen a detent. You add that very fine abrasive to what you know is a metal on metal union or joint. Then flush with hot water, dry it thoroughly and lube it. I agree that sometimes it's necessary to disassemble and diagnose. Thanks for sharing this video with us!

Holy detent balls, Batman! I have a Civivi Pintail I bought some time ago as my first "expensive" knife (ya, my standards have increased a little since then 😂) that has a detent so weak I can't stand carrying it. I checked it out after seeing the video and looks exactly the same, the ball isn't dropping into the hole. I never would have thought to check that, going to have a crack at it this weekend. Hopefully it can be fixed up, I really like the knife and it fits in perfectly well with what I want in a carry. Thanks for the video!

I just returned a knife for having a shockingly stiff detent. Almost like it was creating suction with the detent hole. I'd rather not try to bend the lockbar, but did consider trying to carve a little notch or detent ramp into that detent hole. The dremel adjustment would've worked. Wasn't worth it though, I'm glad I was able to return that cheap feeling knife. Kizer Minitherium.

The detent was so strong, it was almost too perfect of a fit! I took it apart and drilled a bit with a diamond tipped bit, just using my hands and I might have overdone it a bit... (That's a lot of bits) Any fix you can recommend? Making the lock bar stronger?
@DanielDan-rg9zw
@DanielDan-rg9zw 6 ай бұрын
Spoiler alert strengthening the lock bar didn't work! It just rattles... How did I make the whole too wide just twirling the diamond bit in there with my hand few times, and you used a Dremel and just worked? At least it was a budget knife and I got two (QSP canary folder) I wanted to use and abuse the rattling knife anyway cuz that's why I got it obviously, anything else about it is perfect! At least now it's easy to deploy and super fidgety!

I'm a fan of a slightly stronger detent, where it almost hurts my finger to flip open because the blade just flies out so fast and reliably. Feels a lot more premium to me.

People complaining about expensive knives needing time to break in, simply Crack me up! Chris Reeve Knives for example, are one of the most reputable knife makers out there. And his knives have a break in period...the reason the break in period is a thing is because if they went ahead and "broke" a knife in with machines, the final product wouldn't have such tight tolerances and that buttery feel to them. The parts need to wear their own grooves and polish each other to the level of fitting together perfectly. It's no different than a cars break in period, but you don't hear ANYONE complaining about that eh? I mean sure, they could run your brand new car for 1,000 miles so the engine is broke in, and all of the seals are married together....but then it wouldn't be a brand new car :) or you could drive it like a jackass, and F the piston rings up and have your engine last 1/4 of the length if you would have broke it in properly.

Question: I have a Twosun ts223 and the detent is pretty strong. The lockup doesn't look that deep though, maybe 20%. Would you suggest bending the lockup tab back a little or could it be something else?

Hey man. Good job. I have a Zero Tolerance ZT 0804CF. Stupidly on Zero Tolerances behalf, that model does NOT come with a detent ramp. I couldn't believe it. What a bonehead move. Anyway, I looked up videos on "How to make a detent ramp" on KZfaq. I did it how the video said and it worked out. Only, it was a little rough at the beginning, but it has broken in as if the knife came with one from the start. Thanx for the video my Bladed Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲

Speaking about issues, it's quite shocking to me that almost all my knives had quality issues right after the purchase. From blade play to very hard to open with one hand. Kizer, Civivi, CRKT.. Don't they have quality control?! For a knive that cost 80 or 90 euro's! Do they expect me to fix those issues before I can use them as intended? I can and did, but needed Torx screwdrivers, locktite, nano-oil,.. to fix all this.
@NeevesKnives
@NeevesKnives Жыл бұрын
As far as maintenance goes, you are expected to have those tools to maintain your knife, I know sometimes it can be a pain if a knife comes off centered after some flipping and now needs to be lock tighted, but they travel a long way in many cases through many different temperatures and we beg them not to use red lock tight, so they use the medium hold lock tight, which means you might have to re apply it after a while. We don't want permanent red because then we would ruin our knife trying to maintenance them
@Dutch79
@Dutch79 Жыл бұрын
@@NeevesKnives I was talking about issues straight from the factory. In my experience the quality control often lacks when there is for example blade play or a very poor flipping action right from the start.

Detent lash is my current problem with my QuietCarry Waypoint that I've had for a few years. I already sent it back for a broken lockbar screw once and got screwed on the price to fix it and now I've got detent lash... a $300 knife + $80 for the lockbar screw replacement + all the different shipping costs. Easily my most expensive and most problematic knife. Any tips on how to fix detent lash would be much appreciated.

There was once a time where you had to know how to adjust your cars valves. Something that is carried frequently is subject to situations that exceed testing. Time wears all of these things too. If you know of a knife that never requires maintenance more than some point. Drop the link😂 this is all useful knowledge. Even if you don’t use it. Imagine you break your most expensive knife, but the piece you need it’s relatively cheap. You’d rather buy a new one? Not hating, just pointing out lost values replaced due to lack of necessity
