How to Fix a Door That Won't Close Properly (Door Rubs at the Top) Fast and Easy DIY Fix

In this video, I show you how to easily fix a door that won’t close or rubs at the top. I go over 3 door repair DIY fixes after I show you what to look for to see why your door is rubbing, sagging or just plain won’t shut. This is an easy DIY fix home improvement project that you can easily do yourself. I’ll explain exactly how I diagnose the issue, as well as repair and adjust the door by demonstrating the tools and equipment I used.
Tools and Equipment needed:
Hammer
Crescent Wrench
Something to pop the hinge pin out: possibly an old hinge pin or nailset
Equipment and Supplies that may be optional:
Wood shims or wedges
2-3 inch wood screw
1 toothpick

Hi Kevin... I'm trying to do the wrench trick, but the upper hinge can't be pushed back into vertical alignment...is this because the hinge is too worn, ie the joins between the 'knuckles' are quite uneven..? Thanks Michael

Stephanie, I have a slightly different challenge causing two doors on the same wall to stick. In my case, the house seems to have shifted just slightly with the top of the door frame moving to the left slightly. Good luck with your project.

Hello kevin. My closet door was closing fine. I purchased a jewelry box mirror. Because if the hinges on the mirror the door does not close. How can I rectify this problem? Thanks in advance. .

If you have a slight tightness on the top hinge the bottom hinge would have to have a shim behind it to correct the problem, if the shim doesn't correct problem you will have to bend the hinge as he shows in this video but it's better to try shim the hinge on bottom to correct the top closing correctly which is best way to start off being shims do correct the problem much the time, you can buy door shims at most Ace Hardware stores, sometimes you can get by using one shim if door rubs very little if rubs much then use two shims there are thin so use what you need to correct the problem.

Hi, my two screws got free and keeps rolling on the right side but never tightens. I used a Toothpick and with difficulty I screwed it but it still is free and doesn't tighten fully

@@dankroenke5119 it works for my door. Since one is slightly bent that means swapping will lead to deformation of upper and bending back of lower hinges. While when you do bending play you risk to deforming them up to situations where you have to replace them especially if you don’t have right instruments or skills.

Was this a solid core door or a hollow door? I'm guessing a solid interior door. I would have never guessed that, that would have been the solution. How did you find out about this solution? Soooo many questions I know. Also how have you been? You look good.

This presumes that the door frame is uniform from top to bottom. Taking a measurement of the door frame from top to bottom may reveal need to force the door shell wider to accommodate the door.

Please don't try to bend the hinges. What if you are trying to fix a commercial door. Those hinges won't bend. Next time, try shimming the hinges. Loosen the screws holding the top hinge to the jamb. Slide a thin shim behind the hinge, then tighten the screws. That will move the door left or right. A shim on the door stop side will move the door towards the hinges. A shim on the other side will move the door towards the strike side. Sometimes a shim behind the middle hinge is necessary. I hope that this will help.

Doesn’t look like a “commercial door” to me. If the door has pulled itself down, then there is an angle change at the hinge or the frame has shifted. Either way, there’s nothing wrong with bending the hinge- either back or to adjust for the settling frame.

My door issue is opposite this....hits at bottom, very wide gap at top. We're changing out the falling apart old doors & have this 1 causing problems. If you put the old door back up, even with new hinges, it's fine. If you use the new door, even with the old hinges, it absolutely doesn't align. No matter what we do, we have the gap at the top & it hits at the bottom. crooked as a politician. 'Bout to loose our minds.

Place the toothpick into the hold, pull down and break it off, then place the screw into the door and screw away. Why not use a long thin screwdriver to remove the pin? Cuts down damage to the door vs used channel locks and a pin. Why leave the pin in at first? Just remove it and install after bending the hinges. Might just be the longest and worse video on youtube on how to adjust a door hinge or even insert a tooth pick into a hole.

That's what I'm doing. Removing the pin, closing the door then bending the knuckles so it's even. I'm tired of f*****g with this g*****n door.

I’ve tried toothpicks, matches and they just fall into the door frame longer screw just keeps spinning smh

It sounds like maybe whoever installed the door either missed the 2x4 behind the door frame or maybe it split . My suggestion would be to remove the hinge from the door frame- leave the other half attached to door . If you can find out how deep the hole goes hopefully it doesn't go all the way thru use like a piece of wire maybe 🤔, From there drill out hole with a 1/4" drill bit , The hole only needs to be about 1" deeper than the length of screw your using by the way . then take a 1/4" dowel an Superglue it into the hole an let sit for like 5 minutes. Then flip your hinge back over the door jam install your 2 screws, then drill out the hole for the 3rd screw ( remember to make the hole several sizes smaller in dia . Then run your screw back into the door frame . Have done this many many times 👍. Another option would be to only push the toothpicks or matches 3/4 way in the door frame ( you do not have to push them all the thru ) just use as many as needed to fill the dia of the hole . You want to bundle the toothpicks using 3-4 not putting one in at a time , like your making a Peg outta them 🤔. Oh an cut the dowel or toothpicks, matches flush with door frame.
