A step by step DIY instruction on how to replace/fix the coupling on a Dremel Moto Tool Drill model #395.
The rubber/plastic coupling links the motor drive shaft to the drill spindle. This piece will flex but over time it will disintegrate and fail, or when the drill is under extreme stress the coupling will "break out" protecting the motor.
It's an easy DIY project to replace the coupling (part # 2615294309). This part is now made by Bosch which now owns Dremel and can be ordered online.

Great video! Very helpful! One thing I would mention is to make sure to open your model 395 before ordering parts to make sure it's the same. I have a 395 model purchased somewhere between 2001-2003 in the U.S. When I opened mine, I do not have the same plastic piece. My connector is metal. My issue was my outer stater motor was upside down due to balancing. I guess that matters in the end. Mine was making a slight grinding sound from the motor. I would never have figured it out if it wasn't for watching this video several times. Thanks for the video!!!

Just a short follow up. I ordered the parts. The Dremel people were very helpful. Installed the coupler and it works great!! Just think, if it wasn't for KZfaq and other online sites, most people back in the day would have had to send the tool in, incurring larger costs, or a lot may have thrown it away and bought a new one. I have the same Model 395 Dremel, which I picked up at a yard sale for $5, and it needed the same repair. Even though the Canadian cost of the coupler is "looney," these older Dremels are probably better made than the new ones that cost much more. While I had mine apart I checked the motor brushes, which you should consider ordering at the same time. Also the variable speed switch got s shot of electronics cleaner. Works like new now.

Couple of add ins: 1) There's no need to remove the side spring caps, they'll stay in place and won't prevent the case from opening. 2) You'll need size T10 and T15 star bits for the screws.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful and straightforward. Definitely a DIY fix. The old 395 is one the best Dremels made. Ones you buy now are down-engineered. Based on number of views, a lot of people need to do this same coupling fix. Over 24,000 views says it all. Keep up the good work!
@mycompasstv
@mycompasstv 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sterlingstreamliner. You are right about the older Dremels like the model #395, it's a well built hobby workhorse. The rubber coupling is designed to break away if the motor comes under extreme stress. Also, the coupling is like a car tire made of soft pliable rubber so over time it eventually disintegrates. Unfortunately many owners do not realize it's an easy fix, so they simply throw out the drill thinking it's old and broken.

That is SO IMPRESSIVE!! I received a Dremel tool ⚒️ on Christmas 🎄 of 1984. I do not remember which model it was. All I know, is the famous black plastic housing of the tool ⚒️, and the silver/gray plastic box 📦, with the name “Dremel” on the front. It had a steel cooling 😎 fan (the tool). The tool had a max speed of 30.000, or 35.000 rpm, I do not remember. I also think 🤔 the motors in most Dremel tools ⚒️ of then (and before, were permanent magnet 🧲). I like 👍 Dremel’s reputation, even today, for their replaceable parts, and motor brushes. I see that today’s Dremel tools ⚒️ have a black plastic cooling fan. What kind of Dremel tool ⚒️ is next, one ☝️ that does 45.000 rpm? Your friend, Jeff.

HEY THERE!... STOP! It could very well happen that your 1992 model 395 DOES NOT have a coupling at all! My 1994 one doesn't: it has a long shaft that begins at the rear extreme of the motor armature, and continues till the threaded end where the collet is attached, thus having NO short shaft and no bearings and no coupling like the one on this video has! You will need to open it to take a look Before ordering parts. DREMEL has been a lousy company that designs and redesigns their products many times, and a large number of their redesigns are done for the only purpose of making newer versions INCOMPATIBLE with their older accesories, so causing the owner to have to buy again if the older Moto Tool dies and the owner buys a newer one... that owner will find that many accesories will NOT fit on the newer models! A shitty business practice devised to extract as much money as possible from their loyal customers. Not only are their accesories very expensive for what they are, but many are badly designed too, like the almost useless drilling base, which has a too flimsy and free-play to perform a delicate drilling, and not to say anything good of their router bases too. After about 20 years of using my Dremel 395 and its lousy accesories, I became tired of its idiosyncrasies, refused to continue using them, and resorted to expend in a much higher quality MotoTool, the Proxxon IBS/E Professional Drill/Grinder, its EXCELLENT QUALITY and DESIGN MICROMOT MB 140/S Drill Stand, and their very good UHZ Universal Holder. Now, Those are miles above the DREMEL quality!

The coupling cost over $10 USD from Amazon. I'm a cheapo and not going to spend that kind of money for a plastic. I found a plastic tube about 1/4" OD left in my garage. They sell this thing by foot in a local hardware store at a much cheaper price. Normally the plastic tube is used for drinking water or for a fish tank. Heat up a Felix screwdriver and inserted into the tube to make it soft and then shoved the tube in the Dremel metal shaft. Pulled out the metal shaft from the tube and then insert the expanded tube into the plastic shaft/gear on the Dremel. Make the other end of the tube soft and then shove in the metal shaft in place. When the tube cold it will shrink and grab both shafts in place and have enough friction to keep your tool shaft engaged to the motor. I don't even use glue to keep it from coming off since glue will make the plastic tube aged prematurely.
@mycompasstv
@mycompasstv Жыл бұрын
If you can jerry-rig a coupling like that then great. I did try that exact same procedure but found the plastic tube became too brittle it did not have the right elasticity so soon failed. If you have found a sutiable rubber tubbing material that works, then big kudos. DIY soluions are the best! 🤓

Sorry for having to tell you that your nice video could be much better if you take the time to properly write the correct TITLE for it, like: "How to fix the broken coupling inside the model 395 Dremel Moto Tool." ... Because there are many other common failures. Mine is a bad variable speed control, for example. OTOH, I liked it since at least it showed me that my unit is an older version of the 395 that has no coupling and no bearings on a short shaft, as it has a long shaft that goes the entire lenght of the armature and continues to the collet threaded end.

Unfortunately, while dismantling my 395 the copper springs and the 2 black cuboid objects dropped out and now I am uncertain about reinserting them. I can see that I need to accommodate the spin of the shaft but what if I insert upside down? Is the curve “burn in” significant? Or is the curve symmetrical whereas upside down or not is ok? Also, would I want to clean the copper contact ring with some 91% Isopropyl alcohol while I have it dismantled?
@mycompasstv
@mycompasstv Жыл бұрын
You should be able to tell the position of the contacts due to their wear pattern, although it's not that critical as long as the motor spins freely. Sure, you clean the copper contact ring if it's dirty. but I'd just wipe or blow it clean. Make sure the parts are dry before re-assembly. Good luck Mark.

You don't have to take the brush covers off. KEEP YOUR THUMB ON THE MOTOR HOLDING IT IN. It best to have a pan and your parts ready with a small screw driver there also. If the brush (black-pea size) falls out from motor moving to much. Then use screw driver, take black cover off and spring out. Reassemble(- brushes).There is a curved side that goes in 1st keep turning and it will fall in, next spring, next cover. It should then run. Just did 2 of them and now I keep my thumb on the motor. There are more parts that can come out, but brushes are tricky.

Forgot to say that this broken plastic coupling is the result of the kind of Super-Brilliant present day "engineers" that either lack the least bit of materials knowledge, or worst: they designed it to fail and make the manufacturer earn more dollars for replacement parts... The video clearly shows that the coupling was degraded beyond expectation, and since I doubt that the owner went so far as wetting it with gasoline or thinner, that plastic is of the worst quality possible and simply degraded from heat and age. Bad product design, bad material quality, incredibly expensive replacement part for what it is!

The coupling worked as it was intended, which is to disintegrate in order to protect the motor from burning out during excessive stress. It's in fact a brilliant, tried and true design. Yes, you are right it's an expensive replacement part, but what isn't these days. Thanks for your input Alfredo.
