That was excellent Chris. I'd never have thought of adding more water or adding pressure. I tried to separate my lens from the mirror and it cracked the glass. My leak was a stone-chip hole in the lens, which I used chop-sticks to glue the glass-chip back in place, on the inside, through the bulb hole. I used a funnel attached to a hair-dryer to blow warm air directly inside through the bulb hole. Thanks again. D.

Just an extra tip if you really want the light to look good - BEFORE you dry out the inside of the light, you should pour some 90% isopropyl alcohol and/or JetDry on the inside to remove any deposits/spots on the lens left over from the old water. This will ensure you get a nice CLEAN look when you are done.

I do realize this is an older video! You could also use some alcohol (or any quality glass cleaner) to clean the inside of the headlight lens after drying it out and than polish the outside so it is clear again. I mean since you have it out, that would be a grand time to do that... Thumbs Up!

For drying you could pull the vent cap, put the bulb back in and light the bulb. No risk of overheating you headlight since it's a expected working condition (except for the H2O inside). This is also a quick way to dry your headlight before going to a vehicle inspection.

Big thumbs up. Excellent and well presented tutorial. Thank you for sharing this. Saves the hassle that some people experience of tossing the headlight housing and paying big bucks for replacements from the dealership. Older Fords and GM vehicles were especially notorious for headlight leaks. Tips from ASE certified mechanics suggested drilling pilot holes on the bottom for drainage.

That's a great video for the repair - thanks. When I did it, the inside of my headlight was a bit dirty, so I filled with water + soap and got a small soft brush in there and cleaned it a couple of times, rinsed, and dried with a microfibre cloth inserted through the bulb hole and a soft plastic stick to push the cloth around. It cleaned up really well and looked good after sealing and re-installing. I used a silicon sealant that was rated for high temperature (it was a roofing silicone product) and also UV resistant.

You could point a shop vac at the headlamp opening when you apply the caulk to help it penetrate the hole.

You can put the light in your oven at a low temperature as well, this will soften the stock sealant and allow you to remove the front lens, perfect for cleaning the inside. Heat it back up in the oven to re-soften the stock sealant and push the lens back in place, no additional caulk or sealant should be needed.

Sharpies are not Magic Markers. And I don't just mean they're different brands. That's not important. Magic Markers are called "magic" because they're erasable, as opposed to Sharpies which are usually permanent. They're basically opposites, which is why it's weird to call Sharpies "Magic Markers". Also, you don't have to be old to remember Magic Markers. They still exist.

Did not read all of the comments so I will add this. You said that one should not touch the bulbs, here's why and what to do if you do. This info is for all high intensity style bulbs whether used on the vehicle, in the home, and or as garden lights. Your fingers will leave an oily residue that will create a hot spot that will shorten the bulbs life. When ever you do handle these kind of bulbs always use tissue and after replacing the bulb clean it using alcohol and a lit free cloth to remove any of the fingerprints.

Why not just seal the entire thing. Chances are it’s gonna start leaking elsewhere being that it’s an old headlight. And after unclipping and removing the whole thing you might as well. Juss sayin. Also, the headlamp “hole” sometimes gets warped by the heat which doesn’t allow the bulb to “sit” correctly an thus creates a gap. Good video. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

Great video! I think I see some mineral deposits inside the lens from the water- you could use vinegar to remove the mineral deposits. Also would use Silcone sealant instead of caulking because it holds up better than caulk. Caulk will eventually crack.
