How to fix a home AC unit blowing hot air

Make sure to disconnect the fuse and then discharge the capacitor(s) before performing any service, as there is a risk of electric shock! I show how to fix a home air conditioner unit that is not cooling the air by replacing a faulty run capacitor. Some models may have a capacitor dedicated to the fan and another dedicated to the compressor (herm, hermetically-sealed compressor). The compressor capacitor is generally around 80 microfarads (abbreviated uF or MFD). Sometimes the fan and compressor capacitors are combined into one module, this particular unit has 2, but the process is the same.

Did not know the capacitor held a charge afterwards, thank you for that tip on discharging the capacitor.

My ac blows warm air for a couple hours. I called a company and by the time they get here its working fine, happened a few times now

Better chance the capacitor because obviously that intermittent functionally is going to ruin your stem. If it continue to happen the fan motor may be getting old, so replace it also.

We got new AC about few months ago and when the fan turns on it throws hot air after couple minutes it throws cold air. And the house doesn’t stay cold. Any suggestions?

What if the unit is only blowing 8-10 degree lower than the intake temp? (ie house is 75 ac is only blowing 66)

We haven't used our AC since winter started and I go to use it tonight and it's acting like it's still on Heat mode. Air coming out is 110°+ and it 72° out.

@@bluecrabweb Nope, we had a "pro" come out saying the PCB was bad. I ordered a new PCB, swapped it out (it's super easy for an aviation mechanic of 20+ years) and STILL blowing hot air. That was $450 down the drain (including the "pro"). I just swapped out the thermostat with an ecobee4 I had laying around, but it's doing the same thing. The capacitor still looks brand new. The pro said he jumped the circuit on the PCB that is supposed to switch over from heat to cold and it worked which is why he thought it was the PCB. Maybe it is the capacitor🤷. More swaptronics, here we go!

@@xxdemonshitxx bummer, sorry you didn't get it fixed. my AC "Pros" stopped by today and within 10 minutes are saying it's my crappy Nest thermostat. I told them to flee my house as quickly as possible so i wouldn't get billed any more than i should, and i went to Home Depot and picked up a new Honeywell thermostat...$175 for the service call, and $150 for the thermo stat..fingers crossed it gets it working as temps are getting near 80 degrees this week in NW FL.

@@xxdemonshitxx Hey, we got rid of the Nest thermostat, and replaced with a Honeywell "Smart" one..cold air is blowing again, thank god. Funny, everything on KZfaq said either freon, capacitor or reverse switch..and ours was the thermostat.
