Excellent! It's often the case that the burner has to run awhile to clear out old carbon and crud before the stove will run well. Good job! BD

@Jimmy Dylan Uhhh. Sure! I care. But, this is a stove video channel, so I doubt anybody here will know and your question is several billion light years off topic. Why don't you contact instagram and get a replacement password by clicking on "I forgot my password"? Just a thought. Or... put on your big boy pants and ask at a channel that *actually talks about Instagram*? 🤔 Just thinking out loud. Sorry - my assburgers is acting up a bit today. BD

@@BernieDawgCinema Nowadays more and more people are discovering the "glamour" of liquid fueled stoves, because the art of cooking is a great part of the living art. And there is no Cooking-Living art without fire or a stove and the beatiful shine of brass... Another plus to the stove pox is the technology, so resilent and simple, but with a quality to perdure much more than one hundred years. Nowadays, we have not such expectation, mournfully...

Thank you very very much for demonstrating how to remove a blocked NRV by placing the NRV tool in a vise and turn the tank around while holding a significant amount of downwards pressure on the combination. My first attempt to remove an old blocked NRV from a SVEA No5 was a failure. The NRV tool slipped and rounded of the tip of the NRV. So now I can't remove it at all and till so far I didn't manage to get the stove in working order again. But luckily after seeing this video I was able to restore an very beautiful Primus 210 back in working order. It was super easy and done in a few minutes. I went to my dads garage clamped the NRV tool in the vise on the workbench and heard the very same pop sound when it came lose. I replaced the old NRV with a new one and now I have a beautiful vintage stove that can be used on camping trips. Maybe I can restore the old NRV also with the help of this video and keep the stove as original as possible.

Thanks for your comments. If you drop me an email to: bd@berniedawg.com I can show/tell you how to fix your Svea #5 NRV without disassembling the pump. It's quite easy. The technique is one of those I will be featuring in an episode of my new video series called "Stove Tools" that I'm releasing later this fall. It may be a month or so, though, before those show up here on KZfaq. BD

Hi, thanks for posting this video. I have a question. I bought an Optimus #00 in 1985. I recently tried to use it and it won't fire up. The problem is that I tried to stroke the pump but it does not pump feely like there is some pressure. I even opened the release valve. Can you please help me fix this?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema Жыл бұрын
@Eugene Jang Sooo... you bought it 38 years ago. That's a really long time. Probably a bad NRV (non-return valve). It'd be silly to expect rubber to last for 38 years and for the stove to just fire up after all this time. The video right above your comment shows you how to fix the NRV. You should also re-oil the pump leather as it's no doubt dried up after 38 years of non-use. Then, after you've done the work, go watch the how to run a kerosene stove video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMWqhcqU0rm7mGQ.html Still having problems? Hi Bernie. I found a silver Primus at a shop clearance sale. The body is quite pitted is there any way for restoring this, also when i light the stove it sometimes burns like it should then suddenly I have this massive yellow flame, the sound of the burner changes as if there is liquid entering the jet. Any ideas what I need to do or replace. Warm regards. Stephen

Hi, I’ve just bought an old Primus No.5 off eBay and it won’t pressure up, there is an old rough solder repair around the main tank filler neck, how can I rid the old repair and make a new neat joint? Should I just use the same method as your pump tube repair? Thanks
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@andrew keeler The riser (the tube that connects the burner to the tank) is held in place with a big nut on the inside of the tank and can NOT be removed (like the pump tube can) without destroying the stove. Pressure issues are solved in 99% of cases by… 1. replacing the fuel cap gasket, 2. replacing the NRV pip and the NRV head gasket, and 3. replacing or reoiling the leather pump cup on the end of the pump shaft. I show you how to do all three in the video above - watch it in its entirety to learn how. DO NOT address any other parts of the tank until those three issues have been fully taken care of. Blodgy solder repairs to the riser-tank connection are best left alone and considered a part of the history of the stove. Removing the solder will likely reopen previous leaks. A riser-to-tank repair is an advanced stove repair and likely shouldn’t be attempted by the novice. However, if you find that’s the issue after solving the “big three” pressure issues above, drop me a note with some photos of your stove and I can walk you through a riser-to-tank repair in email exchanges. bd@berniedawg.com 👍 BD

Is there suppose to be a seal where the burner meets the tank? On mine it seems to be leaking in that area. Also it's not lighting properly, I'm guessing it's a dirty jet. 🤙🇦🇺
@BernieDawgCinema

@Mark Depends on the stove. Some have the riser tube directly soldered into the tank. Others have a removable riser. Drop me a note with a photo or two of your stove and I can give you a direct answer. bd@berniedawg.com BD

@robertbates3627 Hi Robbie. I make my own pips. I use Viton sheet and hollow punches to do that. But, as you are in the UK, it might save you money and tooling costs to get premade Viton pips from The Fettlebox. fettlebox.co.uk/index.php Viton is the most fuel resistant rubber material and will far outlast any other sort. @QT's Radio It is difficult to tell the problem from your description. Are you saying the jet (nozzle) is broken off in the burner? If so, you will need to replace the burner. Thật khó để nói vấn đề từ mô tả của bạn. Bạn đang nói rằng vòi phun (vòi phun) bị hỏng trong đầu đốt? Nếu vậy, bạn sẽ cần phải thay thế đầu đốt. BD

How do I stop the silent burner connection to the stove from leaking?
@BernieDawgCinema
@BernieDawgCinema 3 жыл бұрын
@Grant Ardern If your leak is between the riser and the burner… unthread the burner from the riser. Dampen the mating surfaces with some water and allow to soak a bit. Then, carefully scape away the old asbestos burner gasket. When clean and you can see the grooves on both mating surfaces, replace the gasket with a new non-asbestos gasket you can get from this Australian supplier (since you are in NZ). www.ebay.com/itm/Primus-Optimus-Camp-Stove-burner-washers-Pack-of-6-LARGE-type-FREE-POSTAGE/303303515666 If your riser is one that unthreads from the tank and it is leaking between the riser and the tank, unthread the riser from the tank. Carefully remove the old lead gasket inside the base of the riser. Dental tools are good for this. When all the lead gasket is gone, replace with a new lead gasket from this supplier in England: fettlebox.co.uk/index.php?search[keywords]=lead&_a=category Or… much easier for us both, just send me an email to the following address and we can show each other photos and communicate like gentlemen instead of trying to communicate through KZfaq comments bd@berniedawg.com 👍 BD

@Andrew Howard Make sure you are using quality 1-K grade water-white (clear) kerosene fuel in the tank of the stove. Make sure you are using denatured alcohol to preheat the stove. Make sure you have serviced the NRV (non-return valve) and the leather pump cup so that the stove tank will build pressure. Then… watch these videos to learn how to start and run your stove: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMWqhcqU0rm7mGQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b79hprd2zqi5Z30.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z5momZmLq9CboJc.html If none of that works for you, write to my free stove help line: bd@berniedawg.com with some photos of your stove. 👍😎 BD

I explain NRV in the video right here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLJ7ptt6vqm4m6M.html NRV stands for "Non-Return Valve" aka one-way valve. An NRV lets you pump air into the tank without it escaping back out of the tank. 👍 BD
