If your Miele vacuum stops working and it's not in warranty, you may be able to fix it for a few quid. Rather than replace the motor, you can fix it. This video shows you how to strip it down, repair the motor and put it back together

You my friend is the reason why KZfaq was invented, bang on the money Triac burnt out replaced and that glorious sound when turning on my NOW working Miele. Thank you very much. You have saved my wife a lot of heart ache and me a lot of money. Who needs bloody influencers on this platform when we've got professionals & hobby techs like you. Good on ya.

Vacuum cleaner suddenly stopped today, found this video and discovered the solder had burnt off the rear of the contact on the PCB, possibly caused by 2 years of fine dust due to non genuine Miele bags. Resoldered the joint, tested before assembly and it worked again. Couple hours work for £0. Great video advice.

OK, as I said in a previous post an excellent video, well done. To avoid using vice gips and risk damaging the impeller, which one reviewer seems to have taken umbrage with, I found that holding it with a pair of heavy duty gardening gloves enabled me to unscrew the nut holding the impeller and screw it up again securely.

Like everyone else seems to have said, what a great video. Miele motor making a grinding noise, thought it wouldn’t do any harm to strip it down first. Spent a good 2 hours cleaning the impeller and motor of plaster dust. Put it back together and now it works! Saved between £60-200 for replacement motor. Thank you.

Thanks for this! Our S2121 stopped working mid task this morning. I followed these instructions down into the small PCB with the Triac in the motor and found that one of the 3-pins had heated up so much that it had melted the solder around the joint, thereby opening up the circuit. Presumably this joint was dodgy out of production, with just enough resistance to heat up over time. I fluxed and resoldered the pin, and put everything back together. Works great. I happened to have a strap wrench, which worked well holding on to the impeller while loosening/tightening the left-hand nut holding it on.

Amazing video. Thankyou. My wife was about to take the Hoover to the Hoover doctor. I reassembled after fitting triac and didn't work initially😥 turned out I needed to learn some soldering skills. I resoldered, checked the circuit board for continuity with a multi meter prior to reassembling. This did the trick. Tks again.

“What a great video. Excellent strip-down instructions. Purchased a couple of the recommended Triacs for about $6 (delivered to my door in a couple of days) and, following the outstanding step-by-step guidance, was able to restore my Miele C3 Complete "Soft Carpet" model to perfect operation for next to nothing instead of $400 - $500 repair bill. Kudos and thanks for taking the time to show how it's done!

Great video thank you. Surprisingly I've had 2 of these exact models come into my workshop in the last week. Both of them had faulty triacs. After changing the triacs I plugged it in (without reassembling the whole unit) and the vacuum started but only for 30 seconds or so. As the motor sped up, I could hear sparks coming from the brushes and then the vacuum stopped. So unfortunately the armatures on both motors looked fine, but they were cooked, causing the triac to burn out

Very helpful, thank you. I had a similar problem, took my vacuum apart, tested for voltage at the poles into the motor and saw that it was normal, so I knew that the problem was within the motor. When I got to the PCB, it was covered in a fine dust as was the rest of the insides of the appliance (I had used it to hoover extremely fine dust from angle grinding tile joints - bad idea!). Anyway I gave all the motor components a good clean using compressed air, reassembled and it now works perfectly. I’m writing this comment to thank you but also to say to other viewers that they may not even need to replace the PCB.

Great video! Clear description of disassembly & reassembly made it possible for me to eliminate the terribly loud running noise that was caused by dirt being sucked into the impeller, unbalancing it. Once cleaned out with a brush and another vacuum cleaner, the unit was reassembled and was returned to ‘just-as-new’ operation. Thanks very much!!! Nic

I have the same issue with my Miele S8310. Thanks for your very helpful guide! I found this triac as alternative: BTB 24-600BRG (TRIAC, 600 V, 25 A, 50 mA Standard, TO-220) Same voltage, same trigger, a bit higher rated current - so it should last a bit longer. I'll give this a try. My original T2050-6H does not seem defective itself (will replace it anyway) but the solder joint has burned away, so it might be a good idea to add copper wire to pcb connection for additional support (and cooling)

Just got back here to say thank you. Very informative video, helped a lot. Would be quite difficult to open without it. Without breaking many parts! Conclusion - one of the brushes was blocked by dust. Spring couldn't push it enough outside. No electric connection because of that. After cleaning works perfect again. That save me a lot of money and a great vacuum.

Great video! My C3 motor was working intermittently, depending on the vacuum cleaner position. The TRIAC was ok so I dug a bit more. The connector socket to receive one of the brush connectors looked a bit loose, so I wrapped the brush connector with a bit of tin foil and after putting it back together again, voila! A working C3 again. Thanks for showing me how to disassemble the motor.

Thank for this ! My s548 decided to only start sometimes, like after repeated on/off switch pushing and such. The weird thing is after it's warmed up it has no issues turning and staying on. The next day however same thing all over again. So I took motor out and the carbon brushes do seem worn and different sizes. I just ordered some and hope this fixes my issue. Thank you for your precise instructions for taking apart.

Great video, many thanks for the helpful advice, I stripped mine down to the motor and used a hair dryer on cold to blow out dust from every part, I then plugged in the power supply and tested the cable from plug all the way into the motor with a non contact 240v power tester to see if there was a broken cable or connection, didnt need to do anything else the motor started and all is working fine now, put everything back carefully as this is where I have trouble and bits break, after assembling the machine I realised I left one of the green motor sponge covers out (the smaller one) and couldnt be asked to strip it down again so put it in the spare bag anf filters box for next time, all working good, thanks again.

Very helpful, thanks. I was stuck at how to get the metal shroud off the motor. My Miele vacuum similar to the one in the video was making a very loud whining noise. Cause turned out to be dust and dirt stuck in the impeller blades. Cleaned it thoroughly with a good pipe cleaning brush, vacuum much quieter and better suction. For those whose vacuum doesn't start or is intermittent but triac looks ok: resolder (reflow) all the high-current connections on the main board and the small motor board containing the triac, including the triac solder joints. The weird waveform produced by the triac damaged the solder connections on my vacuum over time. You can recognize high-current connections by fat traces on the PC board.

Thought maybe the lead was damaged inside the reel but after i opened it up there was power going to the motor so thought the motor was faulty. Excellent video excellent advice. I can add a twist to the story that others may find relevant. My motor stopped working suddenly after a clog (someone ran it without a bag). So I opened things up and saw the telltale burn mark on the board around the triac's middle pin. I put it under a microscope to see clearly that the solder had melted off the pin so it no longer made contact with the trace. After running a continuity check to be sure the trace was okay I added a drop of solder back to close the contact. Reassembled, turned it on and the motor hummed like new. Thank you About The House. Fixed for no quid at all!

Many thanks! This fix worked for me on an old Miele Cat and Dog 2000. I couldn't decide if the motor pcb or the speed control pcb failed and tried this because it was cheaper. 3 leads exit the control pcb and enter the motor pcb. One should be at 230V, one at something a bit less and the blue at zero. When the motor pcb isn't working both of the side pins are dead.

10:30 the one in my 120V Miele C3 motor was a 2050H-6T, which are still in production and readily available, Mouser has them for $1.69 each plus shipping, fingers crossed it and new bearings fixes my dead motor. EDIT: It wasn't the triac, it was the thermal cutout! I was re-doing all the solder joints on the board, and it fell out when I unsoldered one leg, it burned out one leg! Soldered a new leg on, and test the cutout by heating it with the soldering iron and testing continuity. Re-assembled with new Timken 608-2RS bearings in the motor, runs like brand new! Vacuumed about 1000 square feet with it after the repair.

I added a comment yesterday but it's now not appearing. Hope this one does. Great video clear instructions. My problem wasn't the Triac, it was the carbon brushes, which come in a brass holder ... no longer available of course, though you can get carbon brushes and the attached springs from the usual online sources (think I shouldn't have mentioned them by name previously!). Measurements for the carbon brushes are 30x11x6 mm. If brushes are your problem you will need to cut the old ones out of the brass holder and solder the new ones in ... a little fiddly and try not to damage the brass holder. The most difficult part of reassembly is fitting the rear unit after you have put the motor back in. You need to align two 4 pin connectors but it's almost impossible to see them as you try and get the unit seated properly. I eventually took the plastic cover at the back of the rear unit off so I could ensure the two 4 pin connectors fitted. It was tricky getting the back cover off and on again but at least you can see how things fit. Once that connection is made you can test the motor before you fit all the other pieces back on.

Thanks ! Very useful, I have a slightly different Miele and I managed to open the motor Miele MRG 742-42/2 in a similar way and get to the board with Triac and overheating switch. In my case it was the last one that was out of order, one of the two legs had simply melted away. It seems impossible to get this Klixon 3mp331 01 anywhere or even a data sheet to be able to find a suitable replacement. But I managed two connect it anyway. Unfortunately it still switches off due to overheating. The motor seems to be rather clean inside and I have replaced all filters. Could it be bearings that make it so hard for the motor to turn around that it overheats ? When rotating the impella by hand it stops immediately when the hand is taken off.

Thanks for this awesome video! Mine seems to be overheating. The motor is not dirty. The coils are not burned, but still shiny copper. After while the rpm goes down, when it gets warm. Eventually it stalls itself. But, it is not really overheating or hot. Do you know what the problem is?

Great video! For a noob like me it is better to cut legs of the bad triac from the component side and then take out the remainders one by one. It is even possible to solder new triac to say 5 mm remains of the old legs on the same side of the pcb

For my Miele S8790 all was good until about 5 minute mark of video (removing nut). Over the top of the motor is a metal casing which seems almost impossible to remove. Have you any hints / secrets on how to remove this round metal casing. I can send photo if required. Also, to stop motor from spinning I inserted a small screw driver in between fan blade. I mildly bent it out of shape. Is this a future problem looming. Thanks.

Thank you for posting this excellent and very interesting video. My friend has the "Complete C3 Extreme PowerLine" and the "+" button no longer increases the suction power. Any suggestions? Thank you. 🙂

neat video - I wonder if you have an opinion? I took apart a very dusty vacuum and took the motor out and the impeller vanes were clogged. I cleaned it with an air jet and the rpms were insane - a turbo whine... now the motor doesn't run and I wonder if back emf toasted the pcb? all continuity seems good. Also - am looking at the brushes - they may have been work by the extreme revs! Update! thx to this video - I worked it out - before it was dead - it ran the motor for about a second. Stripped it down to the thyristor... dry joint! so I resoldered - good as new! Thx again ~ mike

@About The House My Miele C3 just stays on low power as adjustment buttons won't work, if only it had of stayed on high I would be alright with it. Someone else said it was a defective capacitor in the regulator, it should have a value of 0.22uF/275V. I've dismantled it and cleaned it all including the pcb which looks fine but had a tiny bit of damp on it. The inside body of the machine was quite clean as I've only had it for a few years. Someone else said to switch the wires so that it just has the on / off function. I watched someone do it with a Henry hoover but can't find any info on how to do that with a C3 cat and dog hoover. I've been researching bypassing the motherboard and soldering etc but it's frazzling my noodle. Please Mr About The House, can you assist and do a video on it, I'd be so grateful, thank you!

It's suddenly started working again, all I did was tip it over by accident and the front control panel knocked onto the floor. This is what happened the first time when it broke and got stuck on low suction. All it needed was a whack in the right spot! Hurrah!

nice video, just a suggestion, why not hammer the top bearing out first, like that the brushes and rotor stay in place and alle you have to do is take the circuit board out and fix it. Then clean the mtor with pressured air and you're done. With me the thermal fuse was out . thnx for the video it fixed my Miele!

When I attempted it I discovered the nut had been purposely stripped to ensure I couldn't repair the motor without destroying the impeller and shaft.

great job and great video. i bought a used miele capricorn on ebay and the previous owner had used it for their pets. i took it apart and washed everything but it still stinks. i narrowed it down to the motor. i wanted to take the motor apart and clean it but didn't know how. you're video will help me out tremendously.
