In this video I will show you the two most common causes of a running toilet & how to adjust or repair the problem yourself. Most of the time you can fix a running toilet in seconds!

Thank you so much, I'm a 66 year old Canadian woman who used to be a superintendent with 2nd hubby 30 odd years ago when everyone used the old fashioned ballcock toilets, I had a guess on how to fix this newer one but was being careful because I'm now a tenant in an apartment building, shortly after I began listening to your video I realized my guess was 100% right.

The hole under the flap also gets accumulation of water lime residue. If you scrub it and the flapper sits level, it will stop the running toilet.

Yes, definitely in areas where the water is high in minerals (hard water) will cause the problem you have described. Thanks for the comment.

Thank you so much! I can't believe how easy that fix was. No parts or tools required. I'm glad I found your video because the first video I watched had me taking the toilet apart, so I was happy that I clicked on the next one which was yours and learned all I really needed to do was turn the knob to lower the water line and my problem was solved. Keep being awesome!

its currently 3am and I'm watching because my toilet wouldnt stop running. I know enough that I can lift the float cup and it will stop. I tried that, it didnt work. in fact the float cup was already all the way up! I turned off the water for now so I could read up on fixing this whether it is a full fix or temporary. The float and fill valve had been replaced about 4 years ago, which good old Google says 4-5 years is pretty average. I had attempted to fix it then but lacked the proper tools and as luck would have it, something else, more advanced needed attention so we asked the plumber to do both things. I am tempted to ask a professional anyway but the costs are out of reach right now. I am confident I can fix this myself now that I have the tools and plenty of youtube tutorials to assist so long as the problem is the float cup. I am not sure if mine is adjustable but that is something I will experiment with in the daylight hours. Thank you for your video.

You’re right it’s usually the fill valve but could also be that the flapper is worn out or not seating properly, good luck!

Also another thing to look out for is the fill valve hose. If it's pushed into the flush valve too deep it will cause the water to keep running from the fill valve causing the water level to lower and intermittent running every few minutes or so. I had to replace my fill valve since the flush was so weak it wouldn't flush fully. Replaced it and forgot to keep the hose above where it should be, so keep that in mind when replacing the fill valve because it will cause the water to run. Now it works like a charm. A lot better than before.

You can get black circular gaskets for the flow valve and replace them, instead of the entire unit. The top of those comes right off if you do a 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Swap the gasket out and done.

I got an American standard also doing the same thing. Edgemere model. I think it’s different than the one you got although Bowl looks mighty similar. Isn’t even a year old yet. Just fixed like you showed. I foresee problems down the line though. The float is almost completely submerged before it comes up. Seems like it should be smooth going up. I could be wrong
@JENSENDIY11 ай бұрын
Float could possibly be getting stuck somehow ie. if tank is insulated sometimes float touches insulation and slows it down or maybe it has a small pin hole allowing water inside float water logging it. Most floats are usually only about half submerged. Good luck!
@mpmarvin99911 ай бұрын
@@JENSENDIY Thanks for replying. I installed this toilet this past Thanksgiving day (not a wise move looking back when your supply line wont shut off and is dripping running water and the previous hose from supply to toilet comes up exactly one inch too short) so there should be plenty of warranty left. I'll have to ponder what to do. Again, thanks for replying.

You were correct, it was the Flush Valve level that needed lowering, so Thank YOU!! But, my plastic screw would only allow me to lower it about 1/4" with a screw driver. I did not want to break the plastic screw by twisting too hard. Any suggestions on lowering it further without breaking the plastic screw assembly??
@JENSENDIY16 күн бұрын
I have another video, Fluidmaster concealed trap toilet fill valve replacement. You may be able to lower the whole fill valve assembly if it isn’t already but if the toilet has stopped running l would leave it alone if it’s 1/4 “ below.

4:15 Great video NEW SUB Question, is normal for water to periodically leak from that top black mechanism? I time stamped the video where you tapped on it. I gotta brand new unit, but it seems like every now and then some water leaks underneath that circular part up top for a second or 2.
@JENSENDIY3 ай бұрын
Your homes water pressure may be too high. Sometimes that causes the leak you have described. Your water pressure should be between 50-70 psi. I have a video on how to lower household water pressure. Thanks for the sub👍

When you say to change the part of adjusting the float doesnt work do yoy mean the whole tube thing or just the top part?
@JENSENDIY4 ай бұрын
Yes it’s best to replace the whole fill valve if adjustment doesn’t work. I do have another video, (Fluidmaster concealed trap toilet fill valve replace in 5 min). Meant mostly for skirted toilets and takes less time as long as you get the identical part. Good luck!

can a sporadically running toilet be from the little leak from the valve turn on and off tap beside the toilet
@JENSENDIY Жыл бұрын
No, this would not be the cause. It's most likely the flapper or fill valve but you could check the supply line from the shut off valve to the toilet tank as sometimes they leak and make it look like the shut off is leaking. Hope this helps!
@hmsmedia2005 Жыл бұрын
Do the floppers come in different sizes or are they all standard?
@JENSENDIY Жыл бұрын
2 sizes that I know of, alot of older toilets are 2 inch & newer toilets 3 inch. If you measure the outlet under the flapper that will tell you. Or just take the old flapper to the hardware store with you. Hope this helps!
@MyPooja2710 ай бұрын
Changing the valve would do the magic? By the look of it flapper looks good but not sure about if it has some valve seal underneath.
@JENSENDIY10 ай бұрын
The flapper is what seals so sometimes it looks good but has a small defect where it seals to the plastic rim of the flush valve.
@Empok_Nor2 ай бұрын
The chain that is connected to the flapper has started kinking. The flapper was replaced. Am I doing something wrong during replacement?
@JENSENDIY2 ай бұрын
If this is causing the toilet to run then you may need to remove a few links from the chain. There should be just a little slack on the chain when the flapper is closed. Hope this helps!

Hi, we've replaced the flucsh valve, and the flapper, felt the seal area, no nicks, cracks, and the toilet will still run, about 3 seconds every 15 to 20 minutes. any other suggestions?
@JENSENDIY10 ай бұрын
Make sure the flapper chain has a bit of slack. What you are describing usually means a very small amount of water is getting by the flapper. Good luck!
