Finally! An Aussie video on repairing paintwork. I'm about to attempt my first one because being a chick, all the quotes I got were absolute rip offs so wish me luck! I'm using this video as a guide :)

I've watched almost every paint repair with cans video on yt and this is by far the best one.

But this one of yours is so professional, and you show every step of the way and how it's done. Fantastic job. I have to get rid of some bad scratches, some deep, on the back bumper of my Elantra. Now I can approach it with greater confidence than I had looking at the others, with products you get from Walmart and I have never heard of. naturally. Thanks once again. You have saved me $350 !!!

I searched for a video because my brother-in-law did a fantastic job on a car and I wanted to try a technique on my own car. I rushed my project, but learned from it. I used a Krylon match and a Rustoleum clear coat but there were a lot of "holes" in my process that your video explained. I suppose each project might be different depending on weather and exposure (Winter, Summer, wind, etc), but this video provided me with the basics, the theory, and the knowledge to create my own masterpiece, hopefully. Thanks for your thoroughness. I'm assuming, like anything else, that quality ingredients make for a quality finish so I should pay more for the better stuff. Thanks again.

Cheers mate. The scuffing paste has got grit in it and is different to finishing compound. It cleans the panel and also helps scuff it so its ready for paint or primer.

I've been searching on KZfaq on ways to repair stone chip on my Benz. You did a wonderful job on this vehicle but I didn't want to spend a good part of the day doing this job nor doing the whole fender for one scratch. Ended up using the DuPont scratch filler pen and touch up paint. Came out really good... not perfect like yours but only took around ten minutes for the whole job !

Your Videos are easy to watch and understand, with recognizable and easily obtainable products from any local auto store. The videos also show clearly, exactly the physical scrubbing, sanding, masking, painting techniques needed to do the job. Nice flow to the editing and easy ad-lib presentation style with no lectures. Great work!

Good job man! Not to many people relize that final wet sand and buff gets rid of the (wrinkle) texture of the paint from cans

I want to remind everyone who lives in the northern hemisphere that you will need to do all of these steps in reverse to get the same results.

I find most scratches are clearcoat damage only so I just apply either clearcoat or compound and mostly it turns out OK. Not interested in getting it done in a body shop unless the insurance is paying. Good job man!

It is used with the scotchbrite to clean and scuff the panel. You can also use 1000g wet sandpaper. I did a search for auto body supplies UK and found a site called carpaints4u they have the farecla GScuff.

Make sure the panel is completely dry before applying the color or clear. Also make sure you overlap each pass of spray by 50%. A spray can only has a small span of spray so be sure to overlap and avoid streaks.

Painted the door on my e46 bmw using this method. I just used a scuffing pad from halfords, no paste as cant find in uk. Really happy with results, can't see the blend at all even though it's metallic black :)

I have found by painting outdoors, especially in breezy weather to be a great way to seal gnats and dirt into my finishes.

Wow! I had doubts about what your finished project would look like, but it turned out really nice! A lot of work, but good results, no doubt. I was thinking about doing a small touch-up myself, but now I'm not so sure I can invest as much time in the job.

back masking just like soft edge tape notice how he is rough masking that wing using high build primer and using matt black as a guide coat so you can see what you have rubbed also will show any chips or pinholes this primer is brilliant for when you have feathered out paint like the scratch and that stone chip !! brill

You can spray primer onto sanded paint. It helps the new paint stick and fills in scratches from the sandpaper that was used to repair the scratch.

Hello, I have done a video called 1K vs 2K which goes over the differences. Basically a 2K clear will dry with a full gloss so no buffing is needed. The downside is its quite harm full so caution should be taken.

Thanks. Items used in order. 240 grit sandpaper, Etch Primer for bare metal, primer filler, 400g wet sandpaper, 800g wet sandpaper, colour, clearcoat, 1200g wet sandpaper, cutting compound, woolen buff pad, auto polish.

Thanks. The reason for sanding and buffing after the clear is applied is because 1K Acrylic clear will not give a full gloss without it. It is also quite rough and will not match the original colour of the car. The camera does not show it as good as in real life. Maybe click the quality up to 720p.

@iFrich spray out and clear a sample on something and hold it up to the panel. using thus method the colour can be out a few shades. by blending it won't be that noticeable.

Thanks Chuck the quality in 720p and make it full screen. Pause it when you can see the hood and the guard in the same image.. You can see all the swirl marks in the hood but the guard is A1.

When you use a higher grit sandpaper, you are just sanding down the nooks and crannys that are left from all aerosol products. Doing so many coats of clear and then wet sanding with a fine grit sandpaper (which takes off very little) just ensures that your layer is uniform and flat. The clear coat is still there, it's just been scuffed up. If there was no clear coat, when he polishes at the end, it wouldn't be nearly as shiny. Polishing helps bring back the shine of the clear coat.

Great Video, Easy to do it yourself, I've had great success with your video and the methods used. Easy to do and some patience and I think most people will be satisfied for those touch up repairs or scratches on their own vehicles!

@SchneakerReview I have been told that etch primer is like an acid type substance that allows the paint or primer stick to the metal.

It depends on how deep the scratch is into the paint finish. Modern paint finishes consist a primer, a color coat, and a clear coat on top in that order. Many times light scratches and swirls can be removed by buffing with a compound and cutting pad. Sometimes, light sanding may be required to get out deeper scratches in the clearcoat, followed by buffing to remove the damage from the sanding. However if a scratch completely penetrates the clearcoat, you will need to repaint.

No, by sanding it will allow the new paint and clear to stick to the original finish. Sanding the clearcoat at the end was only with 1200g and is only enough to take a thin layer of clear away to make it level.

awesome vid! my car got a huge "BSO" keyed into the hood when was at a party at KU. I think i might finally paint it with this technique. However the hood also has hail damage.. might throw off the process.

i agree. take the time to do it this way, and save the cash for a whole respray at the local shop. you could do one panel at a time. could learn alot and would increase your skills!

Thanks for posting this! So scary to see you sand that stone chip to bare metal! I was surprised to see that you needed to flatten the clear coat with 1200. The fender looks much better at the end of video than the hood.

Really REALLY good work.

This guide will work, but you might need to apply some body filler. If you sand it with a flat block you will see if there are any low spots. They will need filler to bring the panel all level again. Once thats done you can use this guide. I have some info on body filler in an earlier video I made. 1K Acrylic vs 2 Pack & dent repair. Also a video on repairing a motorcycle tank has some info on body filler.

Most of the time if you have scratch in the middle of the panel you will have to blend the colour like in the video and re clear the whole panel. So if the scratch went across the whole car you will need to re clear the whole side of the car.

@furythree you can get buff pads for a hand drill for about $30 from Ebay.

The red basecoat is your color coat. The clear gives shine and protection from the elements. However the 1k used in the video, does not have long lasting life. A 2k clear has way more UV protection. Which keeps the color from fading out fast and paint from breaking down due to the sun rays.

great how to.. So many steps though.. I have a lot of either pellet gun marks or stone chips all over my truck, every panel, every box side, and tail gate.. So much work I might as well do the whole truck..

Rust will make anything peel and crack. On bare rust free metal, either can be used. Etch primer is more of a production car, main stream bodyshop thing. As they generally don't have large areas down to bare metal. Restoration shops use Epoxy as they deal with larger areas of bare metal. If the metal isn't clean (rust free), it wont matter what you apply to the panel.
