How to Fix an Ice Maker - LG Refrigerator

3 жыл бұрынIn this video, How to Fix an Ice Maker - LG Refrigerator, home renovation brothers Dave and Rich, and Dave's son, Caleb, show you a quick and easy DIY repair you can do to fix your faulty ice maker.
A common problem with ice makers is that the supply line freezes, or perhaps the ice tray is filled too high and freezes into a solid block, preventing the ice maker from dispensing ice.
One DIY hack involves using a hair dryer to blow warm air onto the supply line and surrounding area.
Feel around for any ice obstructions. Keep melting the ice until it appears that the ice maker is free and able to make ice again.
Some ice makers have a test button. If you push the test button you will see the ice tray spin, dispense ice, and get refilled by the supply line.
If that doesn't happen, you could have a faulty ice maker.
After you thaw all the ice blockages you now will have to close the appliance and wait for ice to be made. This could take several hours.
Hopefully you will then have a fresh bin of ice.
This technique is a temporary fix. It works great for when the ice maker bin is filled too high and simply needs to be thawed out and reset.
However, if the ice maker continually freezes up, it could need to be replaced.

That model does have a manual rotate button...it's on the bottom of the left-most component (with the label). It's a white square button located on the bottom. Press and release and the ice maker will rotate to empty the tray. Also, the white tube you described as the water fill line...isn't a water fill line. It's a temperature sensor covered in a shroud.

Yes, you’re right. I checked mine and it does have that manual rotate button as you described. I pressed that button and it rotated and dumped ice and refilled the ice maker with water after. Hopefully, it will make ice again this time. The LG manual that came with the fridge is pretty much useless. Thanks for your comment! Hopefully, this has resolved the ice maker issue of this LG fridge.

There is a test button on the ice maker. Look under the left hand side of the ice maker module and you will see a label and an arrow pointing to a square button. Push the button and if all is working properly the ice tray will tilt to dump the ice. The hair dryer is a good fix for the symptom but not the cure. Make sure the freezer is set below zero (mines at -6) this will possibly help.

Top tip, thanks very much. We have not used the ice maker in a while ( have been using the craft ice in the lower half of the freezer), and I guess the top half had frozen up. A quick blast of the hair dryer has fixed it. Was trying the test switch underneath, but because the unit was frozen it couldn’t do anything . Now everything is working as it should 👍 Cheers from Downunder, after a couple of high 30 degree Celsius days and nights I need ice in 2023

GOT IT FIXED. Similar issues icemaker not working. Tried turning ice maker on/off - no motor noise. Tried hitting the reset button (under left side below power in/off) for 3 seconds - no motor noise. The other comment about water splashing over the unit if the door was slammed hard during the ice making cycle made me think - just try to uncrack overflow jam. I used my fists on the left and right top side and pounded a little. Heard cracking (like old fashion days when you manually have to loosen or twist a manual ice tray to get the ice out). Turn the motor on/off and I could hear slight motor movement. Pounded again. Heard more ice cracking. Ran the test button and everything worked just fine. Thanks for all the comments. It really made the difference of me successfully fixing my icemaker.

I am trying to see what temperature your freezer is set at. Is it -6 degree? Could that be too low and possible freeze the line? Just wondering what LG frig freezer should be set at? Got any clues? My brother, Many thanks for the most excellent video of the ice maker anatomy and the hair dryer trick. I was able to melt the ice that was holding in the ice bin. Once the bin was removed the hair dryer melted the 2" block of ice that was clogging the chute. I cleared away the frozen ice in the bottom of the bin. Everything went back together easily. You saved the day, maybe even my marriage!

We have a similar LG french door refrigerator. The test button is very difficult to see, but there is one. I had to remove the bin and look under the left-hand side of the ice maker. The test button is a very small, squarish button that slides back and forth, front to back, near the back. I wasn't sure whether it was a button until I tried to move it. The button is much smaller than the test switch that appears in the on-line video on the LG web site.

What does the ice maker use to determine when to cycle and dump the ice from the tray? Is it based on time and temperature from when it refilled the tray with water? I can see some photoelectric or infrared sensors above the bin to tell it when to stop dumping and cycling, but that wouldn't signal when to dump the ice.

With these door mounted ice makers, I think if you have people in the habit of slamming the doors shut, than IF the ice tray is in the process of making fresh ice and is not frozen over the top, the near freezing water will splash and immediately freeze all over the rotation mechanism and seize up. Solutions would be to either turn the ice maker off during the day, and on at night when it won't get splashed, or condition members of the house to be press the door shut more controlled without slamming it. Kind of a pain but I'm not really sure what else you could do to prevent it.

My ice maker would not work on its own. The test switch operated like it was supposed to. I found out that the ice maker will not work unless it is 20 degrees or cooler. I put a thermometer in the ice compartment, I was up to 32degrees. Cleaned the back condenser coils, that brought it down to 16 degrees. The coils for cooling are in the refrigerator at the bottom, you have to remove a lot of shelving and panel which houses the air filter. It actually all comes out with 4 screws. Ours had ice build up. The freezer coiler are way at the back behind a plastic shroud. Again you have to remove everything from the freezer to get at the coils. I had about 2-3” of ice build up in there. Let it defrost on its own and now I have ice again. Brought it down to minus 1 degree. I made brownie points with the wife as I cleaned everything before I put it back in

We have LG LRMDC2306S. During first month we’ve had 4 service visits for craft ice maker not working. Each service call reveals the water feed line to the ice maker is frozen solid although the freezer temp is set at +4F. We added two thermometers into the freezer that log temp and they both show 4F so temp sensor is good. Does the craft ice maker line have a heater/defrost? Latest tech wants to switch out water feed line but by this point we have zero confidence LG know how to build a fridge.

I had no luck at all with repairmen from our area working on my refrigerator, you wouldn't believe how many parts they had me ordering that were non returnable... and they wanted use to subscribe to a $450 up front charge for warranty protection. In the end we spent over $400 on a new computer board and a new panel at the rear of the inside of the refrigerator. Freezer worked great refrigerator compartment still would not cool. I wound up fixing it myself, thank you to Utube and just replaced my ice make and it's now working great. All it needed was unplugged and ran a fan in it until it thawed out in the back of the frig. behind the panel an area you just can't see. Seems we had placed items to close to the vents so it wasn't cycling properly and the cold air wasn't getting into the refrigerator compartment so it just froze in a place you just can't see. I would try a few things on my own if I were you or if it's still under warranty make them replace it.

I forgot the two fans the repairman installed and I paid for the parts plus his charge before he recommended another repairman that wanted us to subscribe to the warranty protection. He told me which parts that it could be and I ask for the part numbers, thanked him and ordered the parts and installed them myself. I'm not calling any more repairman thank you.

A comment. That's not the water fill tube or supply line to fill the tray. It's 2 wires in a sheath running to the bottom of the tray. It's possibly a heating element to help release the ice.

Test button is on the left side under the bottom of the ice tray mechanism toward the back. It will make the tray rotate once.

I ran the hairdryer on the exposed water tank behind the lower shelf in the door and the ice started making today...but only for one day. I've had no problems with this for the 3 years I've owned this LG LRFXS2503D/00. I'm wondering WHY this is happening? I don't want to take off thee shelf and panel and defrost the tank every day. How do I know if the ice make is shot or if it's some fixable problem?

There should be an almost hidden "reset" button on the bottom left side. remove the ice bin, put a plastic container where the ice bin was to catch any water or ice cubes in the tray when you hold that reset button for 3 seconds. Ice tray should rotate completely, if all the ice has melted after using the hair dryer on the low setting, to melt ice without burning the plastic parts of the ice maker & tray parts.

I wish I had read your comment BEFORE I hit the reset button! After using the hair dryer hack, finding then pressing the rest button, I proceeded to dump the entire tray of “water” all over the floor! Lol!😂 Thanks anyway

As someone else pointed out, there's a test button hidden way up under the left side against the inside wall. Just a tiny little thing. Cycling the power caused that same weird jamming situation. Pushing the reset cycled it all the way. My Samsung at home will do the same thing. It goes into a fit and stops until you reset it. Then it's fine. I'll update in a few hours if this one isn't working.

there is a reset button for that ice maker its underneath in the back where the on/off button is. I have same issue about to take my refrigator out back and take a sledge hammer to it.

I have LG that comes with the test button but that’s only way to make it spin ..it’s not spinning automatically like used be any tips ? The water pipe is fine I can hear the water going in and after 24 hour it’s ice but it doesn’t spin

My ice maker makes ice at the bottom but not at the top. We just got it yesterday? Is it possible to get a faulty icemaker right out of the box?

Hi Style's Life, wow, a brand new ice maker not working -- well that certainly stinks! Yes, it is possible that you got a defective ice maker right out of the gate, but it seems unlikely. We had a renter who told me the ice maker in our rental wasn't working. When I got there I found out that they had accidentally pushed the "pause" button. Maybe that is the issue with yours. If not, perhaps the supply line is somehow clogged with debris. Check to see if ice maker is set to "pause", that should be in your display panel. If that isn't it, then call your manufacture's support line. They should be able to troubleshoot it over the phone. They should also send out a repair person with a new ice maker at their expense if you can't get it resolved. Good luck!

I have a LG French Door Refrigerator with a ice maker in the door and in the bottom freezer. The bottom freezer ice maker fills with water, but doesn’t freeze. It dumps water, then the water freezes. Any thoughts on why or how I can get it working again? Thanks!

check fan in bottom freezer to make sure it didnt freeze up.there are 2. one for bottom freezer and one for ice maker in door.

There is a test button on that units it’s up underneath on the left side. Remove the ice tray and look up underneath

Having freezer set too cold can cause it to freeze up too. Once you get it all un thawed. Set energy mode to off and put freezer temp on 2 degrees F.

Pretty sure there is in fact a test/reset button up under there. Squat down and then look up to see it. It is small and square, and you push straigt up toward ceiling.

My lg burn the transformer fuse all the time when using ice maker. I have transformer from 220v to 110v because I live in Finland and here is 220v electric system. Am I having too small fuses or why this happens?

Hey Ahsell, Electric can be very complicated. And your 220v is quite different from ours. Could be a variety of issues. You don’t want a fire so call an electrician would be worth the $ to make sure everything is safe! Thx for watching from Finland! Great to know where people watch from!!

The "TEST" or reset button is located under the left side. Look up from underneath... LEFT side. Same side as the on/off button but look up from underneath. The reset is located in the back left side/rear on the bottom of the ice maker. Push and hold the button. The Ice tray will completely cycle. Problem solved.

That is NOT the supply line. That is a sheath for the ice mold temperature sensor. The water fills from above in the top right. The test button is on the underside of the motor on the left. This is completely incorrect.

I used hair dryer but did not help. Removed unit and completely thawed it out. Reinstalled the unit. Same thing. Unit filled with water but it starts to dump the ice but stops and returns to hold position. I have repeatedly cycled and recycled the on off button but the try will not dump the ice or go through the dumping the ice cycle.

Unfortunately, I've tried all of the resets, hair dryers, etc and it's still not working. I've had it serviced before and it was a quick fix whatever he did. It took him less than 5 minutes and had something to do with the water filter. However, I wasn't home and my wife didn't pay attention or ask. My LG refrigerator is a lg lrfxc2416s

Mine is the opposite, not making ice, tested to dump filled out, refilled water and 3 days later, water still liquid. LG fridge has been acting sick for a week now. Plus freezer is not cold enough to freeze foods and the fridge Temp got down only at 44.

Turning the ice maker off & on won't make the tray cycle. There is a button on the left side under the tray, not directly on the try more to the left. Push & hold the button to see if it rotates. It also twists the tray so the cubes fall out. Don't worry it's not breaking.

Hi Broken Empath, yes, definitely, no one wants to do the hair dryer hack every couple of days. We made this video to show a simple DIY method to fix an ice maker. Sometimes the lines just freeze and the hair dryer will clear them and all is well. There are several reasons your ice maker could be having a problem. If it is out of warranty, you could research your exact model and troubleshoot it yourself. Or you could call a repair person. However, the repair might cost as much as a new ice maker, so you could also order a new ice maker and install it yourself. I think people try to keep it too cold. Mine was somehow pushed to -4 degrees. I typically keep it at 0.

Hi AJ, that does sound puzzling. Without being there it would be difficult to determine the exact cause of this problem. We did find a great article from Mrappliance.com: www.mrappliance.com/residential-services/kitchen/refrigerator-not-cold-enough/ They give you a number of steps to try. They say if all else fails, call a repair person. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi Jo, we have had that happen many times. The first thing to check is the area right over where the ice dispenses. Usually there is a black rubber flapper that the ice falls through. On our refrigerator the area directly above this flapper tends to get a block of ice lodged in it. If you open your freezer and remove the ice bin you should be able to access this area. It will be directly below where you removed your ice bin. If there is an ice blockage, use a butter knife to knock the ice block onto the floor. You can also reach your hand up into the dispenser to make sure the passage is clear. Now see if your ice maker dispenses ice. If not, try the hair dryer trick in this video. If none of that works, either replace the ice maker or call an appliance repair person. Let us know how it works out. Hope this helps, good luck!

The water pressure line is probably too high. You need to close the water valve a little to have less pressure.
