I wanted to thank you because my situation was rather unique. I had already torn down the computer to where the motherboard was still in place and then I blew everything out because I thought I had an overheating problem. The screen would say "locking" and then shut down after a few minutes. When I reassembled it and tried it again I got the same message even after the cleaning. What had happened was the computer got dropped and the cooling tube had gotten knocked loose from the plate which mounts to the CPU. When I took the fan loose it just came off and left the plate behind. What I did was I put flux paste on the solder that holds the two pieces together. I then reassembled it, used J-B Weld to stake the tube in place, and placed a weight on it to keep it in contact. After the J-B Weld cured I disassembled and clamped the assembly and used a micro torch to reflow the solder on the plate and the tube so they were back in intimate contact. A trip to Best Buy, and eight bucks for a tube of thermal paste, and we were back in business. Thanks again. P.S. Naphtha, lighter fluid, works wonderfully for cleaning off the paste. It doesn't attack plastics, it has a low VOC, and it is non residual.

Short & to the point with lots of helpful details! I was concerned though that there does not appear to have been any static precautions taken, & that the old thermal paste was not removed before applying new. Any thoughts about those issues? Edit: I just saw that you mentioned in other comments that the old paste should have been removed & was just an oversight. The static risk still concerns me though.

Just drill massive hole behind laptop rear cover. Install desktop water cooler against heatpipes and BOOM 60-70c overclocked. really nice for mid range gaming laptops. Cooling pad for modding helps to mount the computer straight when gaming. Do not use any thermal compund just put cooler against heat pipes it is enough that way after gaming you can just take it off underneath your computer. use 5v from usb to watercooler pump and fan. it is low rpm and works well. cheap you can get these desktop coolers with filled water for 50.

Good video. Years ago probably with previous laptops, I would have been able to try and follow this excellent tutorial. One of the best to date. There has been a problem with my HP laptop cooling fan for bout 7 months now :( I m most definitely not tech savvy and my one friend that was and who used to take care of my laptop and all the tech in my home passed away in March 2021. I'm 63 years old with health challenges that hinder my memory and coordination at times (so not a good idea put tools in my head. Hate to destroy my laptop. HP Canada has told me to replace the cooling fan and labour it should cost me no more than approximately $400 (if I go to Staples). The technician at HP said for about $200 more I could get another laptop. But if you ask me my preference: over purchasing a new laptop with the way the economy is. In a few months, it will go up more than a few $hundred dollars :( So I wonder, should I save still and just get a new laptop with Windows 11 and no further worries of overheating cooling fan? You being the expert here :) answer a question for me please and thank you. If I purchase a cooling pad as shown us here with the 4 fans (what is the brand of preference you mentioned)... If I purchased this cooling pad in the meantime to keep my laptop cool (from overheating) ... tried to save money to purchase a new laptop by next Summer hopefully (2023) Hopefully my laptop won't die. (the only time it shuts down/really burns up is when I watch movies on PRIME VIDEO) not on Netflix or any other place online >>> though it does get hot. For the past 8 months approximately when I turn on my laptop... it will start with a 15-second black screen saying there is a problem with the cooling fans and give me the option to continue with the laptop by hitting ENTER and then taking me to my usual login screen. (is there a way to get rid of this or does the fan have to be fixed?) I have looked through your different videos. Amazing KZfaq Channel. Look forward to any and all feedback from the channel creator.
@PC_Monkey
@PC_Monkey Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment :) If your trying to make sure the computer lasts as long as possible and it only gets really hot watching movies on Prime, then I would def avoid that. $400 to replace a fan and heatsink assembly is pretty expensive. Usually places that sell computers have super high repair prices as they want it to be almost as expensive to sell you a new one which is their main goal. A repair shop that does not sell new computers may be a bit cheaper. For example, I would charge $150 USD max to replace a fan and heatsink! Yes, I would recommend a cooling pad, stay away from heavy functions like a long time watching movies, and leave the computer in a cool place on a hard surface so the vents are clear. You can see a couple examples of cooling pads in the Computer Accessories list here; www.amazon.com/shop/pcmonkey

Loved your instructions. Just curious are all the screws the same size length etc? Reason I ask is I was surprised to see how quickly you disassembled and reassembled the laptop without searching for the correct screws. Back in time around the early 1970’s I was foreman for final assembly of a Peripheral printer in Southborough, Massachusetts. Sold fir over $5,000 and was as heavier than a case of today’s printers. 😂

I did it fast just cuz I do it all day lol. I prob should have slowed it down. No, not all screws are the same size usually. I usually advise keeping the screws of one kind separate from the others. This was one of the first videos I ever shot. The newer videos tell people to watch out for that :)

Hello, I hope you can help me, I have the similar laptop in this tutorial, and it has overheating issues. When I boot it up and do nothing, the fans are already blowing, and when I'm browsing the fan is at max then shut downs after 10 minutes. When I tried to bring it to a technician, he said that it is normal because it is AMD and designed for gaming, and "better" if the fans are always on. Is that normal? He tried to apply a new thermal paste and charged me a good amount of money but the fan is still always on and the overheating persists, so he said it should be left and I'll come back after a few days to get it after he fixed it. If I get it back and it still doesn't fix overheating, are there still other things I can do to fix it?

An overheating computer can be damaging multiple different components if not resolved. First, make sure that the fan and vents are clean and clear. If you need help accessing the fan, let me know what brand and model computer you have and I can help you get inside it. If that does not fix the overheating issue, then try replacing the thermal paste on the CPU and if needed, the GPU as seen here in this video. If that fails too, replace the CPU

Ok, so couple of days ago I decided to clean the fans because they were kind of noisy, but still the pc was working fine. So I took them out, cleaned and put them back. After that the laptop won't boot, with an error message about system temperature 900. So I replaced the thermal paste on both cpu and gpu, but still same problem. Laptop does not boot up. It tries to recover, but while doing that I hear the fans running really fast just before the laptop turns off. What could be the problem? Any hint on what I could try here, before seeing a tech? I reapplied the paste bunch of times, the fans are working, but still laptop cannot boot up.

The cables should be OK too. I was thinking that since i see the fans running, it means they are working fine (?). Could it be that the temperature sensor is somehow damaged? update: i ve replaced both the heatsink and the fans. i m facing the exact same issue. the thing that is driving me crazy, is that if i go into hp diagnostic tool (press f2 at the start), and then boot up the laptop, it works fine. The problem appears when booting it in normal mode or when it recovers from the hibernation. In these cases the fans spin really fast, and the laptop shuts down. I m checking the temperatures while using it and the cpus are between 35 and 70. So, i have no idea what is going on here. Maybe something wrong with the motherboard? (but in that case it would never work). Could it be a problem of the sensor?

Then you should try to fix it now that you have time :) However, the longer a computer is overheating, the longer it has a chance of really damaging some components, least of all the CPU. Its possible you need to replace the CPU and perhaps other components if its been too long.
