How to Fix Analog Stick Drift - 3 Ways - In this video I'm showing you 3 different ways to fix analog stick drift. Option 1: Replace the analog stick. Option 2: Clean the potentiometer. Option 3: Replace the potentiometer. Depending on the problem, cleaning or replacing just the potentiometer won't always work but they can be great options to try first since they are easier than replacing the entire analog stick.

HUGE TIP - For replacing a potentiometor, if you pry it away from the main assembly (like you would to clean it) and bend it back and forth till it snaps off from the pins, that makes it so much easier because then you can just desolder each pin and pull them out one at a time. That way you don't even need a solder sucker or solder wick.

This is gold! I've replaced the whole analog stick many times... little did I realize you can take off the sensors and clean them. Since this video, I've since replaced the sensors from a new analog stick, without replacing the potentiometers and it seemed to work on one controller... But like everything, its a hit or miss, didn't work on another controller. Now instead of removing the whole analog stick, I'll just be replacing the potentiometers from now! Thanks!

I was debating what I'd do for this DIY project I'm planning (I'd need 2 of the only breadboards I have on hand), and JLCPCB looks a heck of a lot better. Kudos for getting an awesome sponsor. And also kudos for the video itself. I was just talking with some friends on discord about joystick drift with the Switch lol. Seems a lot of folks are replacing THE WHOLE PAIR OF JOYCONS when a joystick is drifting.

Michael Diederich If you don’t feel confident opening it up, get yourself a long soft clean paintbrush after a few rotations in the groove literally put your mouth over the stick and blow into it, then turn your controller upside down and tap the stuff out. Repeat process. But be gentle with the brushing.

Successfuly replaced both vertical potentiometers on both sticks, was harder the first time since controller was new and wasnt opened before. Second time I did it in like 15min. The vertical axis were jumping up and down before, now they're stable. It's slightly off center, someone mentioned in these comments each of these sensors is slightly differently calibrated, but I've got slight deadzones set up for that. Thanks for the helpful guide man :D

Thank you soooo much! I bought a spare analog stick (the square with two potetinometers) from a Xbox One controller for 1 USD and I fixed my Series controller up and down stickness and drifting by doing the method 2! The only difference is that I got the small spart (metal ring) that you removed and, instead of putting it back after cleaning the insides of the potentiometer, I replaced with the spare part's one (since the original seemed damaged) and it worked (on second try, I had to use both metal rings from the spare potentiometers because I destroyed the first one putting it back in)!!!!!

Man. Your video was two weeks too late for me. I unfortunately ruined my sons elite controller. I got one stick replaced but the second one didn't come out as cleanly and I think I ruined a trace to one potentiometer as it is at full left deflection in the test software. It was also my first time using hot air. Live and learn I guess. Thanks for helping and sharing!

awesome video. i have never soldered before, but i'm giving it a try. y-axis on left analog stick from xbox one is drifitng up to the north pole, and i'd hate to throw away the controller because of a little piece. i think i will just try and switch the one potentiometer and see how that works, because i don't think there is a need to swap out the entire thing. thanks for the video.

Where's a good place to get new parts for if I need to do this to my controllers? Thank you for making videos like this. They are extremely helpful

Good looking out bro. I couldn't find any where else a method to fix my drift without replacing the whole damn thing or using air which never works.

Quality content, love watching the processes. Successes and failures. I can't get a PS5 this side of Xmas so please find a catastrophic fault so V2 can be purchased with no buyers remorse .....

I’ve been looking everywhere for a tip for this. Thank you so much Steve! Also I heard that blowing really hard into the analog stick gap works too

Hope this helps! I get a lot of questions about this so figured I'd make a dedicated video. These clips will also be in my next video on Sunday.

So all you have done is the Option 2, potentiometer steps right around 6:00 to remove them without soldering and it's fixed many controllers? You clean them the same way as shown in the video?
