This battery does way more than just switch the transmission in an emergency. Once I replaced mine, the error message disappeared and my parking brake, parking sensors and the hold in drive feature started to work normally again. Great video!

Great video! My Auxiliary Battery Malfunction light came on this morning on my 2013 S550. I figured this was the trunk battery. I'm so glad that I googled the error message and found your video. I will get a new Mercedes Auxiliary Battery and replace it myself - excellent detail with easy to follow directions. I really appreciate this.

Very thorough. Appreciate your diagnostic tips but especially the explination of the purpose of the battery as I was considering just driving it until you pointed out that if you need a tow you could be screwed

Thank God for your video. Daimler India, in our region is on a shortage, and this battery has to be ordered from Germany or Taiwan, I had one from a Robotics project, it was plug and play.

thanks. worked just as you showed on a 2011 S550. Ordered battery OEM from Amazon for $47.29, and start to finish install was 45 minutes... only because I was slow and careful. You don't need a 10mm wrench... a needle nosed vise grip worked for me b/c my 10mm socket didn't fit int he space allotted. I already had a 25mm torx from years ago when I needed to remove a Mercedes door panel. I used a painter's multitool, the part with about 5/8" dull blade, to work the side panel off. As you showed, the red connector is harder to get off the old battery than the black side. On a side not, we have had many MB... 190E, C280, E320, of the S Class, W140 x2, W220 (worst car EVER), and now W221. The 221 is the most trouble free of any car we've ever owned, with 160,000 miles and going strong.

I've got the CL500 5.5 2009. When the aux battery failed I lost Cruise Control until it was replaced. Now I've seen this I'll know how to supervise, next time, from the cafe! 🤣

I think it should be mentioned that if you remove the bottom panel (3 torx screws) it makes access much easier. Once I did that I was done in 5 minutes.

Hey Jamie- Thanks for the video on changing the auxiliary battery on a Mercedes S550. Can I ask, what year of an S550 was that? Mine is a 2017 and there's another video floating around that showed the auxiliary battery for a 2017 S550 was in the trunk on the right side. Is this correct? And, if so, it looked like quite a bit more work to change it out. Thoughts?

Great explanation for the purpose of this battery, unfortunately I have an SL 550 and the battery is not located in this place, the “experts” have given me three places to look, under the fuse box behind the passenger seat, in the kick panel on the passenger side or under the hood again on the passanger side as far bak as you can go. I saw nothing like battery unless it’s hidden. Would you have any idea where it might be located? Any assistance would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the great video. Can you charge the aux battery with a battery charger? or Does aux battery get charged by the alternator every time the vehicle is in drive?

If it didn't work then the battery would go flat. Because it has a BMS that should tell you logically that, yes it does get a charge from the car. I would however suggest an additional mod to have a cable mounted so that you can get an emergency power brick to supply power. The question you have to decide is it worth the time to do this. And where would you mount the fitting? This is important for cars that stand a lot, there are three options, a solar battery trickle charger, a normal mains powered trickle charger and of course and cigarette lighter type connection with a external battery pack, you would need to decide where to cut a hole. The easiest is that under panel. And for the main battery there is a fitting we use in motor racing that makes it easy to jack a cable into the system. Never do this while the vehicle is under warranty unless you get the dealer to install prior to taking ownership and the cigarette lighter type could possibly damage the CPU if you don't have a charge controller to limit the variances in charge.

IMPORTANT NOTE Later stop/start cars can have the main battery under hood/bonnet but have a bigger aux battery behind the back seat backrest. They do not have this small battery. Mine was a 2011 S350 bluetec diesel

I am planning to buy a w221 S 500 from the year 2007. The cas has 66.000 miles on it and all the services in the Mercedes Benz dealer. It is a 14 years all car. Electric issues are like a funnel where all are battery problems. Would you recommend to buy a 2007 S500 with the services in Mercedes Benz? Thank you. Great Video!

I can tell you the normal things at that age that will deteriorate, and most are made of some type of rubber: front suspension bushings, motor mounts, transmission mount, ... basically anything made of rubber. Probably also all hoses, and possible belts. All that should be under $2,500, with the suspension being the major part of it. Another part with rubber is the air suspension. A 2007 will likely have had at least 2 of the four corners already replaced... at a cost of about $900 per corner from an independent, about $2,200 per corner from a dealer. Our 2011 with 160k miles had one corner done at 125k miles, and another done at 145k miles.

Hi IIn my 2013.S 550 I got a message “Battery not charging” I went to Walmart, they changed the main battery. Later the message won’t go away. The Mercedes shop told me to go to dealership to update software. The dealership advised to change the auxiliary battery. My question is, I never got auxiliary battery malfunction message, why should I change auxiliary battery. What should be my next step.

It's because most people don't really have impact guns so he used normal tools that everyone would have laying around their garage

My 2011 S550 doesn’t show a Auxiliary Malfunction on the display- i just change my main battery thought and my AC doesn’t work as strong as it did before I changed my main battery. I was told the the Auxiliary battery is also used for the AC radio etc. Do I need to change the Auxiliary battery or is there something else wrong?

I used this video to swap my Aux battery. Thank you for that video. However, I am in need of your help again. I just replaced both my main battery and my auxiliary battery on my 2012 Mercedes s550. i am getting a error showing up on the dash stating battery not charging (in Red). Both batteries are new and fully charged. Is there a way to reset this error?

@Larry Dunn Thank you. Actually, I had to have the instrument cluster replaced and reprogrammed. So they reprogrammed a used cluster from a Mercedes dismantler.

Very good video instructions. Thank you. I bought an aftermarket battery based only on looking at various photos and 12V 1.3ah spec as I couldn't find any information on the physical dimensions. So, taking a risk, I ordered one from Amazon. From watching your video, and using the orientation when you put the battery next to your multi-meter, I noticed that the Positive terminal is on the left side of the battery looking from the terminal end of the battery. The one I ordered from Amazon has the terminals reversed. WILL THERE BE ENOUGH SLAG IN THE WIRING TO ACCOMMODATE THIS SITUATION WHEN CONNECTIING THE TERMINALS? WOULD THIS CAUSE ANY PROBLEM? Also, perhaps if you can update your video with the exact dimensions of this Auxiliary Battery, this will help other to confidently buy an aftermarket battery. I hope to have an answer from you before I start pulling things apart to replace the said battery.

I saw the message (Malfunction Auxiliary Battery) on my dashboard last week while driving my 2015 S550 4Matic...called the dealer and told them that I need to pick up the auxiliary battery to do it myself - to fix the problem etc.. The dealer sold me a bigger battery than the one showing in the video. Now I am confuse/d.. How many auxiliary batteries are there? lol. I did not do anything with the battery they sold me....calling them in the AM...

I have a 2008 S 550 4matic. My problem is that none of my remote functions work in the morning when I enter the car. This has forced me to use the physical key to enter the car or to leave the door unlocked. There is no problem with starting the car and Immediately after the car is started, the remote functions return and operate as they should. During the course of the day, the remote operates as it should, locking and unlocking, the doors and opening the trunk. After being parked for the night, the same issue resurfaces the next morning. Can anyone suggest a solution to this problem? I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

You say the battery is just discharged. Can you not just recharge it? Those SLA batteries are totally rechargeable. In fact, why wouldn't the car be maintaining the charge of the battery during normal operation?

I’m so confused. I have a 2007 S550. I thought the AUX battery was the one under the hood near the passenger side and the main battery is in the trunk behind the seat on the right side. I saw in the video another battery behind fuses. So there’s 3 batteries in this car?😮

I have a 2007 also. The start battery is under the hood. I think the aux battery is behind the rear seat. The description says this procedure is for W221 including 2007 so I don’t know what to think. Having to do major surgery for a simple anticipated service is typical German Engineering.

Question, I know this is a year old. What if your aux battery was just changed for a new one, but 50% of the time when you start her up you get that light again...then i shut it off, open the door and start it back up and the message goes away. @Jamie'sGarage
