Excellent work Oz, I have been chasing a cam sensor fault on a 2001 twin turbo Subaru Legacy. I swapped out the sensor, checked and double-checked the wiring and so on. I was getting to the end of what I could check! scoped everything and hey-presto NOISE! That alternator seemed fine, was putting out a good charge and all but was causing interference. Changed the Alternator and the vehicle runs beautifully. Thank you so much for your great video.

Good job Oz. Really appreciate your videos. From experience 120 mV AC to 250 mV AC seems to be the max allowed ripple depending on manufacturers. Usually outside this range you'll get sensor related codes just like this beauty you diagnosed. Even if no codes occur it's good to test AC ripple when newer batteries are testing bad. AC voltage is bad on batteries.

Found this video as I am tackling a stubborn P0335 Code on a 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid (not my first choice in a car but as a ride share free lancer; it is my bread and butter) Replaced cam sensor (New OEM) and it’s back six months after the repair. Ocasional abnormal idle. Rpm activity will act up while driving and shifting gears. Lurches every now and again while driving. I appreciate this thorough and informative video. I am still scratching my head on what could be causing this code but it looks like I found myself a good channel to subscribe to in the process. Video notifications are turned on. Great video!

Nice diag work bro' This one reminded me of a '94 Acura Vigor that would start misfiring around 2500 rpm. It was late in the evening, so I decided to bypass diag mode, & jump straight to iATN Fix Database mode, where I found one hit on this symptom, which turned out to be related to excessive diode ripple. So, I removed the connector from the regulator, & viola, symptom gone! New alternator fixed car. Thanks for another great diag vid.

without his searching scope wouldn't solve it at all , scope is a good tool when a good reference is available which is not always the case , which proves that the scope is just a fancy tool but it's not necessary at all to have
@NewLevelAuto5 жыл бұрын
amr hamed so how then would you pursue a flex ray network failure due to signal attenuation? It's not a fancy tool at all. It's quite basic . And if used properly is one of the greatest in any diagnosticians arsenal. Are there other ways ? In most cases yes , but certainly not all. A decent scope is under 100 dollars. A snap on ratchet used is the same price. Remember that we do not have the luxury of just repeatedly fitting parts to see if it's the failure. We only have a few hours and that customer must have their vehicle back. Where are you from if I may ask?

Great diagnostic and shows why electronic problems can be tricky. I hope those who don't wrench on their cars appreciate why the mechanics they pay can't always solve every issue on a 1st pass. It appears the alternator output noise coupled into the analog ground of the engine controller (needs more filters), and also that perhaps Ford chose a too-low threshold for the VR signal from the camshaft sensor. Perhaps purposeful so it would still work as the sensor magnet aged or if installation distance was off, but also makes it touchy to any noise in the signal or controller.
@darishopkins2573 Жыл бұрын
I'm betting any noise is irrelevant.
@williamgrissom9022 Жыл бұрын
@@darishopkins2573 No need to bet since he proved the alternator was the noise source. He disabled the alternator so the engine then ran off battery alone and the camshaft sensor signal became very clean. He also researched the problem for this specific model and found where others cured the sensor code issue by swapping in a rebuilt alternator. The camshaft sensor error code then disappeared, proving that the noise was the problem (thus was very relevant).
@dirtyboy83363 жыл бұрын
I also think that my transmission Governor solenoid sensor needs to be replaced as well because it won't shift into gear 3. Out here in Atlanta Georgia it seems like people at mechanic shops don't want to help me so I'm thinking of buying some tools and fixing the problem myself

Good job on the video, not all of us have an expensive snap-on scope, how do we diagnose a P0340 code without an expensive scope?
@DFX2KX5 жыл бұрын
Any oscilloscope should work here:a cheap chinese one aught to do just as well. The Snap-on one is just made with Automotive use in mind (and they're built like tanks). You may also be able to remove the alternator and take it to a shop to have it tested for this as well, which might be a cheaper option then taking in the whole car.

Hey Oz I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy gt i have a cam sensor circuit code and i changed them both changed the oxy sensors had new coils an sparks done an a month later i got the cam code but it runs fine but when i go to slow down it either dies or has a rough idle. Not all the time does it do this though it is random. Most of the time when i crank up it has a moment or two the idle sounds rough an some times when i put it in drive or reverse it acts up but its random though so no consistent. Would that be the wiring harness to the sensors? being its a Subaru not the best wiring. Or would it be something else cause its not feeling a running like a bad cam sensor thank you for your time!!

Added information... the Radio suppression capacitors are found on the front of the engine. Those capacitors aren't for the "radio." Capacitors filter out noise just like what you saw on your scope. In other words they filter out radio frequency noise (RF noise). You might have fixed it with the alternator but I believe the better fix was with the capacitor... it only costs $8. Soon the new alternator might cause the same problem and you'll be in the same problem. Excellent video but go further just like you said and don't throw parts at your car. In fact might be able to clean the connections on the capacitor and it'll be free.

I have a 2004 Nissan Frontier 4x4 3.3L V6. It all of the sudden would just not start. It threw the P0340 Code so naturally I had the County mechanic replace the distributor because that is where the Cam position sensor is; well, it still didn't fire after that. I saw another video that said this code could also be caused by the Crank position sensor, so i ordered one of those and it hasn't arrived yet. I also ordered a knock sensor because I also got that code a while back when I was having misfires and needed to replace spark plug 6. It is winter here in Northern MN and my truck is a long ways away from civilization parked in the snow. I really need some help with this one.
