Excellent video! I have always felt that death wobble was a sign of problems. My 2021 JLU Rubicon, has non-stock axles and a 2 1/2 inch lift running 39 inch tires with beadlock wheels. At 65 mph there was a very slight wobble. After watching your video, I decided to check the balance of my beadlock wheels. I used balancing beads when I installed the tires on the wheels. So..., I pulled the ring off both wheels and vacuumed out the beads and took them to a local tire shop to have them both balanced. Wow, problem solved. It now drives like a dream.

Great video. First guy I have seen that talks about the relationship between caster and drive shaft angle. I will add two more easy things to look at. Front alignment toe. A slight amount of toe in, still within specs will help. Do not have any toe out. Also check tire pressure. To much pressure can make it worse. Most Jeeps like between 28-35 psi. Generally the lower the better.

I can't believe what I have just seen !! This man is the only man that has shown the actual real reason for the wobble ! The shopping trolley wheel shacking is what made me relies my problem was me changing the caster angle with the 2.50 lift. My 2000xj has factory adjustment ,the hole where the lower control arm attaches to the body bracket is slotted and there's an adjuster is also there that alowes the arm to be moved either direction . So I put the steering back to factory specs and walla !! steers like a new xj jeep !

Every individual death wobble has its own cause. Many are caused by the track bar.

When I bought my stock jeep, it already had the death wobble that I didn't know about initially. I installed a 'levelling' kit, which is only like 2 inches front, 1.5 in the back, and still had the wobble. I noticed the steering stabilizer had leak marks on it, so I changed it, and that 'fixed' the wobble, and I thought that was that. About 18 months later, it was back, so I changed the stabilizer again, once again 'fixing' the wobble. So this month it was back, and I bought an upgraded steering stabilizer, but before installing it, I decided to, once again, dig into researching the problem to try and see WHY a vehicle designed to take bumps apparently couldn't take even a slight bump on the highway. So I settled on the lower control arms after watching your vid, and bought adjustable ones, and simply eye-balled the length by laying it next to a stock one I just removed from the jeep, adding about quarter to half an inch to the length, and then matching the second new adjustable control arm to the first to get equal lengths, and thereafter installing both new ones on the jeep one at a time. I had no idea how much longer to set the new control arms, and they're somewhere between 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch longer than stock. I took the jeep for a drive and immediately it feels 'stiffer, and the straightening out of turns feel faster, too. It felt a lot 'looser' before. I've yet to take it on my daily route and see if the wobble is gone or not, but it seems a small lengthening made a huge difference already. So does that sound right? Will such a small control arm extension be enough to fix the caster and thus the wobble? Are the tolerances really that close? Also, I haven't tightened the locking nut on the new control arms yet. Does it really matter?

I do have to replace my front upper control arm bushings and im hoping that helps but how do I measure my caster cause nobody has ever pointed that out for me. Awesome vid man!

Great video! It’s helping me understand why I have developed a death wobble. I experienced it twice for the first time tonight at 70mph. I just installed a 4.5 lift on my 86 MJ that came with fix lower control arms. No uppers. But I did install a new adjustable track bar. Do you think I’m going to have to replace both the upper and lower control arms with adjustable ones to fix my issue? Or can you think of another option? Thanks again for the great video.

See I have these symptoms especially in the 55-65 speed range. But mine doesnt seem to be triggered by bumps... it seems to be triggered by certain sections of roads. And to top it off it's usually the same section everytime like the road is really rough when in fact it's not. To top it off I've driven those sections in multiple vehicles without the same issue. I changed out my tie rod arm on the driver side as it was in rough shape. But hasn't seemed to really help the issue. I should not as well it's a 2w drive jk 07 wrangler

If an elongated lower control arm helps, a shortened upper control arm should do the same ? I'm just asking because the longer lower control armm helped in my case but I wanted to keep the oem lowers because the adjustable lower had crappy bushings. so installed adjustable uppers (shortened as much as the lowers were longer) but it did not have the same positive effect like the longer lowers. Any suggestions where I'm thinking wrong ?

So if I’m understanding this correctly, my caster is one of the first things to check to resolving my death wobble. I should check that ahead of my Track Bar, Ball Joints, and Tie Rod Ends. I’m in a 14 JKU that I lifted 2.5” on 35s. Lifted is a couple years ago and just now running into consistent wobble problems.

I just bought a 92 limited xj, its been fully restored, pretty much everything new. My problem is the steering is way to tight, it wont self steer back to center, and it wants to follow off camber parts in the road, but it has zero wobble, even over some of the worst bumps. It has a 3 inch lift. 31 inch tires, new ball joints, zj steering components, new steering box, new steering pump, new lines, and new steering shaft from column.

I have a 2018 JL. No issues with it until I brought it in for an oil change and a recall. There are no mods nor is it lifted. A week after I brought it in I experienced my first death wobble. Took it to the dealer and was told o needed a wheel alignment. Did that. That same week it happened again. Took it to the dealer. I was told the recall was done incorrectly and that they were going to re do the recall. A few days later the wobble happened again. Now it's at the dealer waiting to be serviced again. I hope the 4th time is a charm

So you mostly talked about lifting and then seeing death wobble. I have a stock JL and it seems to trigger death wobble way too often. Cant imagine they built it with negative caster.. The only "recall" the dealer says was out there was the steering stabilizer which we all know is a band aid. So was the 18 JL just built wrong?

So if I added a 2.5 inch lift spring to the front of my zj would that be enough to throw off my caster. I’ve always heard that xjs/zjs didnt need longer control arms until 3.5 or more inches of lift. Mine goes into death wobble at any slight bump or variation in the road after 45 mph. If I stay at or below 45 I don’t have death wobble but I still have really bad bump steer
@dr.deathwobble4899

@dr.deathwobble4899
@dr.deathwobble4899 3 жыл бұрын
The only way you will be able to change camber is through the ball joints. As long as the ball joints and wheel bearings are tight your camber is fine, unless your axle is bent... Then its time for an upgraded front axle.

I put on an adjustable one, no change. After seeing your video we put on adjustable lower control arms and adjusted them to what the lift called for which is 23 1/8" (stock 22 1/2")from center hole to center hole. Still death wobble. Just had an alignment done and this thing is worse. They pushed the lower control arm out to 24". The steering was tighter, but it shook at 15mph.... Is my happy spot between 23 1/8 and 24? SOTO'S any lift height modification will impact the ball joint relative location effecting the vehicles caster. So short answer is yes it will BUT it may not effect it enough for you to tell a drivability issue at lower lift heights.

Just wondering if the steering gear box would also a play a major roll in the death wobble?

Doing the permanent fix on my WJ with 4" lift. I want 7 degrees caster AND no vibes from my front driveshaft, rotating the C's on the axle now.
@cdeprima1209

It is just rotational vibration which is matches the natural resonance; just need steering stabilizers for dampening and more conservative build and driving habits!

I have a 3.5" Metalcloak lift with 1.25 body lift (was on when I bought the Jeep used). I had death wobble the other day, it really happens when I hit something with the driver's side tire. I only have upper adjustable arms, the caster is 4.7 L 4.9R. Took it to the dealer and they said the brand new Metalcloak steering stabilizer was bad and needed a new one from Fox($350).

I had death wobble in my 2001 jeep xj 2x4 with large tires. Bought regular tires and wobble went away.

I had one do it after a tire rotate, bone stock. I balanced the tires and visually saw they were damn OK, noticed new ball joints and checked the links were all tight. That axle design is absolutely horrible!

I'm sure your diagram made sense to you but I have no idea what that was supposed to represent and I know what caster/camber, etc. is. Maybe take 15 seconds at the beginning to describe your doodle

2WD Wrangler had death wobble, balenced and rotated tires and wear is ok, new ball joints, tie rod ends and alignment. It seemed resolved, But wait........NO it isnt! Customer wanted a 3" spring lift to level the jeep out and add tire clearance, checked pinion angle/caster and it was at + 7 deg. reset to +4.5 and still have death wobble. Trailing arms have good bushings..

The root of death wobble is improper toe. Any amount of toe in can cause it. Or if you experiment too far out can cause it also. With larger footprint tires, you'll usually end up slightly out before it goes away. It really is that simple.
@dr.deathwobble4899
@dr.deathwobble4899 5 жыл бұрын
Correct toe in is one of the causes of death wobble but not the only. No amount of toe out will correct a Jeep with improper caster, you are saving from a wobble at the expense of excessive tire scrub.
@mikegreer9041
@mikegreer9041 5 жыл бұрын
Also, your not compensating for the road crown, which drastically alters the direction of the tire, due to the tire contact being on the inside of the tire. You get more scrub, as you say, from not setting your tracking(toe) correctly. The crown of the road is never consistant, but there's some always there, which means if your set at 0 toe, your still tracking in. Especially if you have a big foot printed tire. Factory toe specs is the problem.

Wrong. Lifting a Jeep adds caster, it doesn't reduce caster(upper control arm is shorter than the lower control arm). Lifting the Jeep caster increases. I have 43 years in front end alignment. First death wobble fix I had was a Freightliner tractor that the factory put too much caster in the straight axle. Dropped the caster 3 degrees, problem solved.
