Have you ever had the E01 of F09 error code on your Whirlpool Front Loading washer?
We've had this problem TWICE now.
The first time, I took the entire washer apart to get to the filter on the front side of the machine.
But, after talking to a family member who worked at Whirlpool, I learned a little bit easier and less time consuming way to clean the filter, which is causing the washer to stop in the middle of the cycle and beep over and over again - flashing the E01 and F09 Error Codes, also an SUD code.
I hope this video helps you save time and not break anything on your Whirlpool Washing machine.
What you'll need:
- Drill
- 1/4" Drill Bit
- Hex screw bit
- Towels to clean up the water
- A place to save screws so you don't lose them
Good luck!
Your fellow wannabe handyman

Awesome video! I just took off the 4 screws below the water door off and was able to remove the filter, clean it, and put it back in took about 10 minutes! Skip to 3:40 for where I started the repair! Don't have to remove all those screws on the back

Just skipped to 3.40 sec part of video and worked great. Only hitch was ours is not set up on drawer, so we had to raise on bricks, then pitch it a bit froward. We then added two baking pans under front to catch the water.

This video is amazing! I am a 51-year-old female, that was just able to take apart my sewing machine and unclog my drain! I have a couple of additional suggestions, one would be to have a shop vac ready to suck up the water that comes out when you pull out the drain plug. The other is just a note about the position that the drain plug needsTo be put back into the tube. There is a little notch that needs to be lined up, which took me a fair bit of time to figure out when it is really hard to see in there! Thank you again!

Great Video - thanks. Isn't it ASTONISHING that Whirlpool would design a machine with a filter virtually guaranteed to need periodic cleaning that requires: 1 - three different types of hand tools 2 - moving the machine to access the BACK panel for a front facing filter 3 - removing the top for a filter mounted at the bottom. 4 - limiting access to the filter from the front without dismantling door/seals etc. I am considering simply cutting a 4 in access hole in the front panel below the door, to make this easy. Then I'll put a decorative magnetic placard over it. edited 2/12/23. I ended up cutting an access window in the front of the washer and have been easily able to get to to the plug to do periodic cleaning. Take that GE - cheeseheads!!! It worked great for 2 years. But now same error codes and no blockage in the filter. More kudos to the rocket scientists at GE! will update again when I solve it. The machine washes clothes well (when it works) but I'm still just bewildered that easier access for periodic maintenance wasn't considered in the design. Never buying GE again.

If you had seen my Whirlpool refrigerator (I had to 3d print some parts to fix it), you wouldn't be surprised at a design where a drain plug is buried in the machine where you need to remove the back to get to it. It also took a wrench to get that drain plug out (it is quite tight... otherwise it would leak of course, but man that wasn't easy.).

Thanks for posting this! My Maytag front loading washer (~2016) door was locked due to the same error (F9 E1), and your washer was similar enough to mine that I was able to get to and clean out my front-bottom filter, too. Mine does not have the bottom storage cabinet though, so I let the water escape from the filter housing and through holes in the washer base - and go into my floor drain. Without that, I'd probably have found a helper, some cinder blocks and a bucket to put underneath. I used a T20 torx bit, 1/4" and 5/16" drivers, drill and extension bit, and my headlamp. Works great now - I can get a few more years out of it.

Thank you so much for your clear video. I was successful in fixing my troubles and I am so grateful. After reading previous comments I didn't remove all the panels you did. I simply removed the four screws at the bottom on the front. I could wedge my arm in to remove the filter. I thought I would find masks but I found money! About five dollars worth of Canadian coins. And......lots of muck from almost ten years of ranch laundry.

@@kevinkline1947 Yes there was water and I was warned about that thru this thread and video. Its been a while now since I fixed it but I think I just had the shop vac ready and took the chance to remove the water as soon as it accumulated. If you have a shop vacuum, you can pull off the drain hose from the back of the washer and suck out the water by sticking the shop vac hose on the drain connection of the washer. You could leave the drain hose on and suck it out through the drain hose instead, I suppose. It saved a big mess on the floor. I have a similar model, but the drain filter opening is sideways in the middle of the washer. So, it's easier for me to take the back off to access the drain filter.

Alright folks, Ive had this error and have fixed it... for the most part. I replaced the water level sensor (Easy to do and costs ~$40). Although I'm wondering if that was necessary in the first place. Ive found that if you overload your washer or have too many water absorbing fabrics in the washer (towels, sweatpants.. anything cotton) it can throw this error when its in the drain cycle. The highly water absorbing fabrics can get heavy and take too long to "drain". Take some out and run the spin and drain cycle and see if that works. Sometimes you have to uplug the washer and let it sit for 5 mins before trying the drain cycle. I had already checked the pump filter and tubes to make sure there was no clogging as well.

10:04 Thanks! I unplugged machine for about 30 minutes. Put a large towel to soak up the water in the tub and added just a few of the heavy wet diapers to balance load. Put on drain and spin. Delirious that it worked! I rewashed the items on regular cycle. Now I will do the same with the rest of the load. Saved me from having to use a drill or clean 🤮the filter 🥳.

Great help. However my washer and dryer are in a form fitting cove and I could not pull out the washer or gain access to the rear. My hack was to merely take the 4 screws off of the bottom of the washer then I forced the bottom open far enough to un-screw and remove the filter. I used a shop vac to get the remaining water that leaked when the threads of the filter started leaking. Thank you again for the help.

Just take off 10 screws in the lower and pull the panel off and the filter is right there. Did it in 15 minutes. Easy easy and you don’t have to take the top off

I can't believe Whirlpool put a filter that is designed to be cleaned, in such a difficult place to access.

Have you thought about making your own access door on the washer? I have a Whirlpool dryer that constantly gets lint stuck and make the dryer super loud. Tech came out and told me it was common and he just clean it all out and it was fine. The next time, I took the thing apart and cleaned it like the tech did. Then I bought a small vacuum cleaning kit for dryers. It worked okay, was able to get some stuff, but only reduced the noise and did not return it back to normal. I have an idea to just cut a hole in the sheet metal right where I need access to clean the lint on the inside. Then seal it back up with hvac foil tape. It won't be pretty, but it sure would save some time. Probably be able to maintain the machine more frequently and extend the life of it. I'm working through an E01 and F09 error right now. Model is a little different, but I'm going to guess some of the core components are the same.

Thanks for the video. My suggestion is to get a new washer. This is about as ridiculous a design as I've seen for their horrible refrigerator (which, unfortunately, we have due to space constraints). Again, thanks for this video. I'll likely begin going through this procedure, all the while thinking about the time when I might rid myself of this poorly designed monstrosity (cleaning out the soap container is a painful chore on this machine also). EDIT: Note, some DUETs have the filter pointing to the left side of the washer (like mine)... It would have been EASIER to take off the 11 screws on the back only and you have access to the filter. So, check your model. If you don't have the model he made the video about, it may be WAY easier to just take the back off. Get yourself a drain pan too. Otherwise you'll have the problem he did, water everywhere (there was a LOT of water in mine).

I was able to follow the directions all good until... I realize my washer must be a different model... the filter is not in the same place. Well, now I will be locating my filter.

Nice work. Any thougts about doing this if you have gas dryer on top that would be a pain to move!

Update to the above due to the work to move or prop up the stacked dryer I just went for it and just accessed it by unscrewing the bottom four screws and carefully prying open the bottom just enough to reach in. With the help of my wife from the other side we got it lose and was able to clean out 4 kids socks. Sock monster found! Then with the help of my wife from the other side was able to tighten it back up. Thanks for the visual of what needed to happen.

I have a similar machine 2018 model direct drive. I took the front apart as shown and no filter housing. Mine is middle of the machine and side facing. Far easier to reach from the rear panel more screws but only the rear panel comes off and they are all visible and easily accessible. turns out there was a blockage, but the water pump was shot. Probably not enough restriction to throw the code, but made it work hard enough to have an early death.

Great video, thank you! Curious, if in hindsight, did the top actually need to come off? Could just removing the soap screws and the bottom screws allowed the same access? Or is it too risky for the top front panel screw tabs breaking off?
@advancedfamilyeyecare9430
@advancedfamilyeyecare9430 3 жыл бұрын
Great question @Randy. As I think back through the two times we've had to do this, I think removing the top is a must in order to get the front panel piece to even move (since it's wedged under the top piece). I think it'd be too risky that the front panel would brake. It has little plastic pieces that, if not handle cautiously, will brake right off.

You can drain most of the water with a wet vac attached to the drain hose. That's how i did mine on my older Whirlpool Duet front loader. I only had to remove 3 screws on the bottom panel on the front to access my drain pump. Mine wasn't as clogged as yours was. My washer is 17 years old.

PROTIP!!! The fastest way to get access to the filter is through the bottom panel, 4 screws. Quick version: pull away from wall, tilt back, remove bottom panel, remove & clear filter. Keep small bucket handy underneath as youll be draining a fair amount of water. Detailed: Pull the washer about 1.5-2 feet from the wall, use the door and front facing top edge of the washer to tip it back against the wall. It should rest on its own at about 45 degrees and if it doesn't just pull it away from the wall a bit more. Remove the 4ish screws. Unless you like cleaning alot of water up, have a short bucket or large bowl handy because this error always pops up with it full. Place your container under the filter and loosen it, opening or closing as needed to drain. Once no more liquids come out, pull the filter out, clean as needed, and screw it back in. It is a firm stop and you can't strip the threads. Optional: with the filter out, carefully tip the washer back towards you to continue further draining. The machines are finnicky, you may need this, you may not. Also optional: reinstall the bottom panel. Tip it down, push it back, plug it in. Should be problem free, quite a bit faster. Nothing against the video creator, I'm just lazy and need to do this easily twice a month.
