How To Fix Elbow Pain (BULLETPROOF YOUR ELBOWS!)

Now I’ve personally experienced elbow pain and tennis elbow before and I know it’s not fun. It hinders our training, diminishes our performance, and it just plain hurts. So today I want to go over 3 elbow pain causes that are likely contributing to your elbow pain when working out and what you need to do in order to not only fix your elbow pain but the exercises to do for elbow pain that’ll prevent it from coming back. This way, you can start lifting pain free as soon as possible and protect this joint for life.
The first culprit is an imbalance in your forearm strength and just weak grip strength in general. Weak extensor muscles in the forearm are the main culprit for elbow pain and studies cite “repetitive gripping” to be the cause of elbow pain. So strengthening your forearms, especially your extensors, as well as increasing your overall grip strength is what’s key to creating bullet-proof elbows and has consistently been shown to be an effective approach to relieving elbow pain. And the simplest way to start out is to regularly perform standard wrist extensions to help strengthen and build more endurance in your weaker wrist extensors. If however the pain you experience is on the inside of your elbow rather than on the outside, then you’d want to perform wrist curls instead of wrist extensions to help build the endurance of your wrist flexors since in this case you have the opposite imbalance.
So we addressed a problem below the elbow, but now we need to look above the elbow for some other possible elbow pain causes. And the most common culprit here is weakness in the muscles involved in stabilizing the shoulder and scapula. Because a lack of stabilization here then means that the muscles surrounding your elbow joint will be forced to work overtime to compensate for that lack of stability during our pushing and pulling exercises. Which again leads to elbow pain due to overuse and over-dependence on these forearm muscles. I have put out quite a few videos that address these muscles (linked below). But some of the best options for you to get started with would be exercises like scapular pull-ups to help strengthen the traps, and then simple external rotation movements to help strengthen your rotator cuff.
The last cause of elbow pain when working out, or the worsening of your existing elbow pain, is often due to just trying to “push through the pain”. When you feel discomfort in your joints, don’t ignore it. For this reason, dumbbells will become your best friend as they allow you to manipulate your hand position into basically any position that feels comfortable. Basically, we want to take our hands out of a supinated or pronated position and instead into a neutral grip as much as possible, since this places the least stress on our forearm muscles and eliminates our tendency to excessively flex and extend our wrist as we perform our exercises.
In addition, to fix your elbow pain, you want to always be mindful of your wrist positioning during your exercises. Avoid flexing or extending your wrists excessively during exercises like chin-ups, curls, and even pushdowns as this creates a ton of stress on the forearm muscles and tendons. Instead, focus on keeping the wrist neutral and in line with your forearms as you perform these movements.
To sum up the video, here are the steps and exercises to keep in mind for elbow pain:
First, dedicate more time to your forearm training and grip training.
Pain on outside of elbow = Wrist extensions: 3 sets of 10 reps
Pain on inside of elbow = Wrist curls: 3 sets of 10 reps
Suitcase carries: 3 sets of 30s walks each side
Then, address potential weaknesses in your shoulder and scapular stabilizer muscles.
Scapular pull-ups: 3 sets of 10 reps
External rotation exercise: 3 sets of 5-10 reps
And finally, manipulate your exercises and be mindful of your wrist positioning to avoid worsening the pain.
Implement more neutral grip exercises: Hammer curls, neutral grip presses, neutral grip rows, etc.
But all in all, you need to realize that if you’re feeling stress in certain joints then it’s often a result of imbalances or weaknesses elsewhere in the body. And for a step-by-step program that prevents this from happening by showing you exactly how to train to maximize growth while correcting your imbalances and weaknesses in the process, then simply take the analysis quiz to discover which science-based program would be best for you and where your body is currently at below:

i started feeling elbow pain a few weeks ago... all my life i had a terrible wrist pain, i went to doctors, did exams etc, i was diagnosed with tenosynovitis, but no one never told me it could be due to lack of forearm strength. when i started feeling my elbows, i suspected it could have something to do with my wrist, so i started doing some strength exercises for the forearms and then, like magic, in a few days, my elbows and my wrist pains were gone. it’s amazing to see your explanations bc it’s exactly what i felt.

I watched several videos on "how to fix elbow pain" over the past 4/5 months and none of them worked. I started getting extremely discouraged. I stumbled across this video over the weekend and after performing the exercises presented in this video, I felt INSTANT relief in my elbow. I am in total disbelief as to how much this is helping. I would have never thought that week mid/lower traps would have been the problem but here I am almost pain free after just 3 days of these exercises. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO!!!

I've personally experienced tennis elbow, and the exercises I was given by qualified physiotherapists, were eccentric wrist extensions, where you use the muscles to lower the hand not lift the hand as in normal wrist extensions Apparently these are the latest exercises recommended for tennis elbow. You start with just your hand weight and if thing's start to improve enough, you slowly over time add some weight, extra resistance. Also the physio checked my neck as sometimes the pain in your arm could be due to a neck problem

Good video. After 7-8 hopeless useless elbow videos this one is spot on when it comes to my outer elbow pain. The imbalance cause of the pain in the first place seems very plausible. An nice with some motivation to keep on exercising but WITHOUT hurting the area of pain. One thing I'd like to add is that if you keep on exercising WITHOUT causing pain in a bad elbow etc. you also keep stimulating growth hormone in your body overall which will speed up the repair process of joints and tendencies. Thanks!

Being completely honest, I had been experiencing inner elbow pain with my left arm for the past 3 weeks and had not been going to the gym to see if that would help it. I will definitely try to follow this advice and see if I can safely work out while gradually building more forearm and shoulder strength to balance out possible elbow overuse. Thank you, Jeremy! I hope these tips will help me get back on track!

Great video. It's good to know you can train around the pain rather than just stop for weeks on end. I started working out during lockdown (like half the world) and now have 'golfers elbow' - probably from over extending my wrist doing curls with too heavy a weight. I've been regularly applying ice and heat, strengthening forearm, wrists, and rotator cuffs as described. Gonna start working out with resistance bands to begin with, high reps and a neutral grip. Booked a couple of ultrasound sessions with a physio too. Determined to get this thing under control!

I really appreciate you citing studies. I myself an a skeptic for good reason as there is a lot of misinformation and conflict/confusion out there. Anyone can post a youtube video and I want to know that the information im dedicating my time and effort to is reliable. And you provide that security. Appreciate the work you do earned a sub and a like. Edit:The only critique I have is that you provide a way to test what I have. Providing a way to test for weakness in forearms or weakness in rotator cuffs.

Always train with proper form especially with pulling exercises. Go lighter and train the movement pattern first. By properly engaging the targeted muscle group for the exercise this will lead to avoiding of excessive use of the forearms doing most of the work which can lead to elbow issues. Furthermore, If you are striving too soon for progressive overload by pulling or pushing heavier weight in each session before properly training for solid biomechanics and movement form for the muscle group you will likely lead to strain and pain as mentioned specifically in pulling exercises. I’ve seen this issue come up with myself and with others. Lastly you just have to rest if you’ve injured or have an inflamed joint and tendon. Otherwise one is just exacerbating the issue with more wear and tear and increasing inflammation making the problem worse. It’s not what people want to hear but rest is best to heal and recuperate.
@adonizi
@adonizi 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Were training the muscle, not the movement. If you "progressively overload" your benchpress by letting the bar drop to your chest, bounce it and push it with your shoulders, its not true progressive overload. Its just form breakdown. You see people at the gym all the time swinging heavy ass dumbells, what are supposed to be dumbell curls, but pretty much only work the wrist. No bicep is used.
@adonizi
@adonizi 3 жыл бұрын
Their ego feels great swinging 50 pound dumbells, but they have no biceps. In the long run they just develope joint and tendon issues. Its so stupid.

I'm so happy I found this video. I had small tears in my rotator cuff which made targeting the middle/lower trap area difficult to hit; I could never fully squeeze those muscles without having pain in my shoulder. This made me overcompensated and put more stress on my elbow and now I have both inside and outside elbow pain. I had surgery to fix the rotator cuff and I cant wait to get back in to the gym and fix my imbalances.

Whalers a few weeks? Get real! How about implement some mobility exercises and strengthen scapular stabilizers. Tony, sounds like you are tight or weak in some area of the range of motion of the pushup. As someone who used to have constant clicking, grinding, discomfort in the pushup, I am speaking from experience. You likely do not have the strength or mobility to keep your shoulders in the proper position during the pushup. Jeremy has great videos on shoulder mobility. I suggest you give them a try. Also stretch your neck and your traps. Scapular stability is your best friend and likely what you are lacking. Also, check out the FitnessFAQs KZfaq channel. They have a lot of great content on shoulder health and mobility.

This video makes so much sense. I wear a suit to work every day and every day I have to pop my shoulders back into place several times per day by stretching. I don’t exercise often anymore but every time I do exercise I get terrible pain on the inside of my elbows (tennis elbow) and it makes me never wanna workout again. I’ve been trying to find out the main cause. I definitely over exert my forearms on lifts and have weak shoulders. This video is very helpful, thank you!

Believe it or not, this might be the most important post you'll read Everyone of us has broken God's moral law, the Ten Commandments. We have all lied, stolen, hated and lusted. And James 2:10 states that breaking one of the Commandments makes us guilty of breaking them all. Problem is, we can never outweigh our sins through good works because the Creator is perfect in Holiness, meaning His standard is far above ours. And He is also perfect in Justice, meaning not a single sin will go unpunished. And the punishment of sin is being cast into hell, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth with no end. Ever. Fortunately, God is also perfect in love, so 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ left His throne in Heaven and came to this earth as a man. He lived a perfect, sinless life and He so loved us, that He took the punishment of our sin, when He suffered horribly on the cross. Isaiah 53 tells us that his face was marred beyond recognition and that he suffered more than any man. But right before His death, Jesus said "It is finished" meaning the the debt for our sins was paid in full. But on the 3rd day, Jesus conquered death and He was resurrected. So that means now, we can go free from the wrath of God's judgment not by earning it, but rather as a free gift of grace, if you accept Jesus. But, a gift can either accepted or rejected. So if you want to accept the free gift or forgiveness, of grace, and of salvation, this is what you should do: Humbly admit to God that you have sinned against Him, and through gratitude in the sacrifice of His Son, repent (turn away) from your old sinful ways. Then, confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, your Savior. Believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and was resurrected 3 days later. Roman's 10:9 and 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 says that if you do this you are saved. I'm not telling you to get religious, because Christianity is not a religion, but a relationship with God. And the moment you do this, God will grant you a new heart, which does not take pleasure in sin and He will give you eternal life. Nothing on this earth even close to compares to what awaits believers. What you do with this information will determine where you will be for Eternity; meaning accepting Christ is the single most important decision you'll EVER make. And all of us here, believer or atheist, know that this is very true. Jesus Christ wants YOU to come to Him this very moment; don't even think about sleeping until you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, because your tomorrow isn't guaranteed. You could die at any moment. Hebrews 9: 27 "It is appointed unto man once to die, but after this, the Judgment." All praise and honor to Jesus Christ, King of kings, Lord of lords.
