How to fix blinking or flashing or flickering lights in your house that are driving you crazy. This shows you a very common cause that can happen over time and help show you how to fix it and what to check.
Even if you aren't comfortable doing this electrical work yourself at least you can share this with a qualified electrician that can help you.
As always with any repair electrical work can be dangerous. You must ALWAYS turn off the power to the panel.
Remember the main feed/lugs are still energized and can be dangerous when working in your panel. So use this for general information but it is NOT a complete instructional video.
This is to help you with your problem and point you in the right direction. YOU are responsible for what you do and determining what you are capable and feel safe doing.
I hope this video is helpful and may solve your problem and help you.

I was very surprised only because I had a neighbor, who is an industrial electrician perform this procedure not more than 2 years ago. I have been experiencing problems with even the microwave. It literally wouldn't run at full power at times. I couldn't warm my cup of coffee. To my pleasant surprise after I checked and tightened slightly all the connections that would allow it I put the panel back together and turned the main back on and it appears everything is back to normal. Still, I am absolutely amazed after doing this several months ago, that this was the issue. Can't thank you enough!!!

Worked for me! Half of my breakers in my subpanel had no power after the lights would flicker and go out. Watched this vid and tightened all of the wire connections and the problem was solved. Most of the connections were tight. None were what I would consider loose, loosest was maybe a quarter turn. Thanks for the help.

Although a loose neutral can commonly do this, a ground wire should not be drawing current except when something else is wrong. If tightening a bare ground fixed the problem, there is another issue, such as a corroded/loose neutral with incorrect ground bonding. It could be as simple as a frayed appliance wire.

I drove myself nuts trying to figure out why my lights were flickering. Not as dramatic as the beginning of this video. More like dimming really quick. I done all the things in this video and more. Tightened screws in panel, changed plugs and switches. My lights in certain rooms wouldn’t flicker but was in sync with the washing machine. All of the things happening was crazy and the randomness of it also will drive you crazy. I even have an electrician in the family. Solution: The one thing we did know for sure is all this started happening right after we had our house painted and new gutters put up. Well I was having trouble with the internet so the cable company came out. While he was outside the TVs went off, microwave, plugs in other rooms and wouldn’t come back on. We ask him what he did he said I just unscrewed the cable and put it back but your electrical wire from the pole to house is hanging real low. He said I’m no electrician but it’s below code. Called power co immediately and had a broken neutral. It’s the wire with no coating. That was the culprit. Power guy said the gutter guys must of disconnected the line from the house and the only thing holding it up was where the neutral was connected to house. The weight of line snapped the neutral. The neutral regulates the power coming in. It’s supposed to be 120 volts but I was getting as high as 150 volts. All that ended up frying was a power strip that saved one of my TVs, it blew the bulbs on both flood lights and the most expensive casualty was my over stove microwave. Sorry for long story but if this can save you time and sanity it’s worth it. Check your line from pole to house.

William C. That could just be a voltage drop. Anything that consumes power will drop the voltage that comes in. Therefore something as high current as a washing machine can definitely drop the voltage enough to see a difference in the lights intensity.

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had flickering lights in my 14 year old Mobile Home. The circuit breakers were OK on the panel inside the home but the main grounding wire on the outside panel was loose by about a half turn. I snugged it up and the flickering light problem went away. Big relief because I was thinking I had a problem that would cost thousands of dollars for repairs by a licensed contractor.

My brother had lights dimming when the washer, dryer, or large load cycled on and off. The power company found the neutral cable on the pole a few feet from the weatherhead was damaged to about two thirds of it's original diameter. Seems a squirrel had been chewing on it and some strands were severed. It was near a pecan tree where they like to spend time. However, they replaced the wiring between the poles and the transformer, also. So, either the neutral, or the transformer, or both caused the current to cycle in the house.

My small 2 cents. #1 for home owners they should use a torque screwdriver. They sell them for cheap at your local big box store. I believe the setting for those breakers is 25 in lbs, it also says either on the front or side of the breaker. That way they dont over or under tighten. #2 I would separate the grounds from the neutrals. Having them on the same bar is one thing but on the same lug is another. But great quality video and sound advice 👍

One more layer of safety when working with electrical wires is to wear a pair of dry leather gloves. Leather is non conductive as long as they are dry. Make sure they don't have ANY holes in them as that makes them useless as far as shock protection goes.

If you notice that sometimes lights go dim, and sometimes they are brighter than normal, that is the classic symptom of a loose/bad neutral connection. A bad neutral voltage can be anywhere from 0 to 250 volts, instead of the normal 120 volts, and will in no time damage appliances and electronics. Doing what is recommended in this video would be a good first step in trying to solve the problem. I would also visually check the 3 line wires that go to the main breaker and neutral bus. I would look for signs of arcing, and overheating, and if you did see something wrong call an electrician and don't try repair this yourself.

The neutrals are the loose wires way more often than the breaker wires. Especially in older panels where the neutral bars are tiered. The neutral screws tend to be harder to turn because they’re more likely to be seized.

Sometimes flickering might be caused by networked circuits (shared neutral for 2 opposite hots) used for light circuit and washing mashine (or other device containing motor). Then solution is to call an electrician. Basically those circuits must be separated.

For instance a stranded and solid wire of the same size can’t go under the lug but you can put to 2 solids under one or 2 stranded under one only if same size. I don’t like to do it but sometimes you got to with old panels

Having tremendous electric problems at the house. Some lights aren't working or sometimes work but most of the time don't. I strongly suspect some lose wire somewhere as on a low voltage light it does light up in the Kitchen like a dim candle. Really odd. All the light switches changed. The Light fittings have been changed. Now the fuse box...I suspect either something in the fuse box or else something has chewed through the wiring. As I said before, occasionally, like when it is warm, the lights come back on. Perhaps they're expanding in the fuse box causing a connection. Must be something somewhere doing it.

Any ideas on what would cause every light in a house to flicker occasionally, not just a single circuit? We built a house that has entirely LED bulbs, and our homeowner says that a few times each day all of the lights will flicker for a fraction of a second. I know this is typical if something that draws a large current turns on, such as the A/C compressor. However, the A/C compressor does not seem to be the cause. I suspect the well pump might be the culprit, since we installed a large 3/4 HP pump, and it seems to happen most frequently in the morning when water is being used. The power company checked their incoming power and said all was OK, and our electrician has checked to ensure that all connections are secure. Thanks.

If it's every led light doing this than it's still very likely a load inside. The most common thing I still see is home laser printers and copiers. Even when they don't print they randomly will cycle during the way. They can still cause this same issue throughout the house. The other thing is if regular dimmer switches are used and even ones that are LED compatible can still be incompatible with certain bulbs. A homeowner might think it's every light but they can only be in one room at a time so a lot of times it's really just one circuit affected. These are tricky to find but maybe that helps.

At 1:07 you show wire nut in video, what's the rules on extending wires in electrical panel? Is that okay to do, to move circuits around in panel, I'm in nyc thanks

Here is a thread about it, local codes can vary. But I have always understood it to be ok. www.inspectionnews.net/home_inspection/electrical-systems-home-inspection-and-commercial-inspection/20590-wire-nuts-inside-panel.html#:~:text=Wire%20nuts%20in%20panels%20are,know%20where%20it's%20going%20to.

I have a perfectly normal home, never happens. I was sitting in my fort with with my friends on FaceTime. The lights started flickering and I freaked out. I heard footsteps when I was home alone that night because my family were on a vacation and left me home with the cat. The cat was in my room laying down with me. One of my friends called my mom and we were in tears. Anyway, I got scared but my parents watched this and everything looked fine.

I've noticed the fans in my house are fluctuating in speed and the lights are flickering? When I turn on my electric frying pan the lights also flicker. Any thoughts? Ty.

But if a wire slipped out some you would have to push it back in.. The screws loosen sure & its good to tighten them so wires don't slip out, but i don't see how it would make your lights flicker unless it was slipping out, maybe not a direct connection? by either way you'd want to make sure the wires are pushed in all the way wouldn't you? I'm not a professional but my uncle was a grandmaster lineman so i do know a bit about electricity & have worked on it a bunch of times throughout my life.

I found some roof top units or florsent lights can cause Flickering shut those off to see if not move on. If the Led lights flickering it can be a dimmer switch may not be compatible. If flickering lights remove 1 Led light put in 1 incondence light bulbs the filament will bleed the homonic that tell you Led bulbs not compatible with dimmer switch. Then look for loose wire. Trick works 1 bulb load of a switch will tell you with light circuit the problem in stead pulling the hole place apart work alot for me. So I can look at a smaller part of the house pin point what room it is faster.

I recently moved in my dads house that has been abandoned for 2 years. The kitchen light wouldn’t work after power had been restored and my daughter was in her bedroom using a hair dryer then all of a sudden all lights went out in the house then came back on and now the kitchen lights are working and now there are flickering lights all through out the house. Any ideas?

Don't try this esp if only one lamp is blinking. Normally is just the lamp itself or the led driver.

Had a 150-watt incandescent bulb that started a random flicker a few weeks before it burned out. Thought it might be the old dimmer, but replacing the bulb solved everything. Also, LED dimmers are usually backward-compatible to incandescent lamps, but if you upgrade to LEDs you usually must replace the old dimmer to the new LED-compatibles.

I noticed the grounds and neutral wires on some were under the same terminal 😮. They should absolutely be separated. Grounds under one and neutral under another.

Can I please have your opinion as I am worried and it is a holiday weekend so I am unable to contact my landlord or the electric company. Lights in my living room are dimming periodically. I unplugged several things from different outlets and they are still dimming. I thought maybe it was due to the refrigerator kicking on but I unplugged everything from that wall and it is still doing it. No matter what I unplugged or switched around the lights are still dimming. I also had a fan running and when the lights dim the fan goes out for a brief second. Not all the way like a huge surge, just slightly. It is happening about every 20 minutes. I am really worried, don't know how to fix any of this stuff, or do I want to try. Do you know what it could be, any precautions to take until I am able to make contact with someone on Tuesday?

Based on what you wrote it sounds like you either have a problem at your circuit breaker panel, or the main service coming in. If you pay your electric bill directly, you can call your electricity provider and they have crews 24x7 and don't usually charge for something like this to look at it. It's unlikely that it is something within your space doing it, unless you are running an electric heater or huge pump. I would recommend calling your electric company first and and having them check it out. I hope this is helpful.

About a month after I installed an LED compatible wall dimmer switch for an older, overhead lighting fixture (I put in 4 dimmable LED bulbs) all the lights in the house began to intermittently flicker, the overhead light fixture sometimes goes completely off for a split second. Infuriating and wondering if the dimmer is the culprit, why would that affect other house light fixtures? Since the dimmer switch worked just fine for the first month with no flickering, possibly it's not connected to the flickering?

Yes what you said has happened to me as well. That's the dirty side of LED. I still use them all but many electronic dimmers no longer work and can cause flickering with these Led bulbs also. Great points. Thanks for watching,

@@SilverCymbal yeah, but I used a special dimmer switch made just for dimmable LED bulbs. Why would that cause lights to flicker elsewhere in the house? Perhaps its unrelated to the switch? Other weird thing, mostly occurs at night. Ugh...

I upgraded all my bulbs to LED a few years ago.. and all was fine. Then I upgraded my tank water heater to a big 3 line electric water heater. Everything was working fine. Then 6 months later we noticed some new LED bulbs flickering when water is heating. The old bulbs that don't flicker are Ecosmart daylight 120v 60hz 9.5w 193ma 840 Lumens non-dimmable . The new bulbs that flicker are Ecosmart 120v 60hz 9.5w 171ma 840lm non-dimmable and 120v 60hz 9.5w 150ma 800lm non-dimmable. I also tried 9w and 8w bulbs and dimmable from other brands. Everything new flickers. I'm sure my system is too big for my house and this 200 amp service. About to call an electrician and possibly downgrading my water heater. We have 3 bathrooms, 1 kitchen, 4 adult occupants.

I just started noticing flickering lights in the bathroom/kitchen/bedroom and the 3 lights are in a straight line, so I assume on the same circuit? The lights in the rest of the house don't do that.

What if its only 1 closet in the house? My closet light has never worked properly, even though years ago we had someone out to the house to try to fix it, the problem persisted some time after he left. Its aggravating not being able to use it, what should I do?

If it is just one light then it's one of three things. It's wall switch/dimmer if you have one, the circuit feeding it (unlikely) of the fixture. The reason I say unlikely for the circuit is that they are usually not one light on the circuit, meaning you would have a few other things on that circuit. What type of switch do you have, and what type of fixture is it, fluorescent or led, reg bulb?

What would cause all lights in house to "pulse" every second. Every 1 second the lights slightly dim. When running an old microwave the incandescent lamp inside is seen to dim on the same periodic cycle. This pulsing effect happens all day and night. I realized it is not actually pulsing in amplitude but instead dimming in amplitude.
