KE Jetronic fuel injected Benz engines feature an adjustable idle air control valve. Here is a video about how to do that.

@@straybenzes I got it running again. Put in my old fuel pump relay and it started working again. Good thing I kept the old one. If I let the engine warm up I can see some smoke come up from the back of the engine, probably from some sort of oil leak. It doesn't smell like engine oil. What could it be? How do I check it?

@@ChopsticksDIYGarden Yeah, think twice before throwing out old relays. OEM ones are getting harder and harder to find. The smoke situation is best addressed by closely observing the running engine and tracing where it is coming from.; Most of the time leaks have been there a while and therefor there may be a lot of old crusty messes building up over time. Sometimes there is no way around thoroughly cleaning that area with degreaser to you can start tracing the leak's origin better. Six cylinder engines of that era do tend to leak oil towards the back where the engine compartment firewall is. Could be a valve cover gasket but very often it is the head gasket.

Hi Rolf..another useful video. Thanks. What can you do about the following? I have fast idle at startup and it continues as I drive. If I drive somewhere and park for shopping for a short time, when I start up , the idle is no longer fast but 600 rpm+-. Once I drive for a while it will "suddenly"return to high idle. If I am parked with motor running, after a while, it will "jump" to fast idle. It seems this has something to do with temperature causing sudden drop or sudden elevation of rpm..My 380se has 120k. I emphasize "sudden" as there is a click and then suddenly rpm goes up. What do the two wires on the Idle control valve connect to? Anything temperature related?? This seems to be heat related.Thanks. RNT

That is most likely the fuel pump relay. With a warm motor and false high idle measure the voltage on the cold start valve. If that is still shows voltage than either the relay is defective or the EZL may also be defective.
