So,Matt……fast forward to100 years from now….this home is scheduled for “disintegration” and they zap it with the light beam, and lo and behold , the only thing remaining is these patches to the floor…….in frustration the worker yells “Just who was this Fixer guy and how much of this flex stuff did he use!?!?!?!?”Aaaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! My house built in 1940 too. I placed stick down tiles in 2 rooms, I don’t have gaps like you showed. I’ve had to replace one tile and it was all I could do to pry that sticky piece of tile up. At least I learned what to do, just in case. Thanks 😊

Ok so here's what I learned from this video... When it comes to old houses that are already far from perfect (no offense to your house lol), if you're fixing old flooring, you have to improvise, adapt, use the power of your imagination, and come up with whatever it takes to fill/cover the hole and make it structurally sound. And what really matters in the end is for the floor to be flat/even and of course properly secured. Hopefully I got it right lol Yet another awesome video. Keep up the good work!

Be careful with that can hole, you should fill that properly, the floating floor you are targeting is super thin and you could put a hole right through it with something heavy or sharp like a lady heel or something like that

Awesome. We have a 1940’s house as well and we’re putting in a new floor eventually. We now have electric heating so don’t need the big vents in the floor and will need to patch 👍🏼❤️ no asbestos thank goodness

What I really like about your videos that I can't find anywhere else are the non-typical problems and possible ways to fix them. I have the same hole in the subfloor above my shower drain but the floor joist span is 24 inches apart. Do I still need to apply this fix and span to the floor joists?

I hired someone to replace the subfloor on my bathroom due to rot from water damage. He didn't get the level quite right so he used a leveling compounds and did a terrible wavy job with it... twice. I told him to leave it and I fixed it myself with a bit of sanding (not fun) and a product called MAPEI Planipatch which was fantastic once I got a feel on how to work with it (small batches, just enough water and work very fast). It would be perfect for the last bit of leveling on patches like that. You can put it right over wood (I would sand old wood first for better adhesion) or concrete and it sets up fast so it can be walked on pretty soon after application if need be. I was even able to perfect my less than ideal spots with just a 6" random orbital and 36 grit paper even though it is cementous. I like vinyl flooring but it isn't very forgiving towards imperfections below it. Also that last hole may be a good chance to show the patching technique where one cuts a patch, sets a router to the depth of the patch, traces the patch on the floor, and then routes out the perfect hole for the patch to sit.

Very interesting video, your attention to detail is very impressive - Love your work! IF - you ever run out of filming content and want to come to Florida, I have a 75 year old craftsman house that I want to do some updates to. Kitchen is a galley with original built in place plywood cabinets, nothing wrong with them, they are solid. They have the original finish on them, back in the day, guessing varnish/stained. Would like them painted white. The, god only knows how old counter top, is 5 different Laminates pieced together, at least they are all the same shade of dull beige, ha ha ha. I would like butcher block counters and then just white subway tile back splash. Then....there's the bathroom, nothing wrong with it, just outdated but has the original cast iron tub, it's not clawfoot. I need to take out the tub and put in a walk in shower, mobility issues. The bathroom has green plastic tiles 1/2 way up on the walls, what they did back in the 50's. Going with bead board and penny tiles on the floor. I watched all your previous videos, really enjoyed the bathroom remodel and enjoying the current videos. Thank you.

As someone who removed a closet in a second bedroom, I had this happen and the video tips came in handy. As a diy’er I was mortified to be able to see in to my creepy crawl space. Don’t want any creepy crawlers or slithering snake coming in to my home.

Definitely patch that last hole! In your doing the vinyl plank you can stab right throught it with a chair or heel.

My husband and I are renovating two homes - we had to patch a hole near a window - I fell through that hole TWICE - the second time really hurting myself - landed on palm, injured my shoulder! Over a year ago, just now am feeling back to normal.

I have a friend who put a floating floor in his living room and hall. When I walk on it in my shoes the footsteps sound hollow. What causes that? What would prevent that? Maybe you will address that when you put down your floating floor.

We Stick tiled our house about 17 yrs ago and boy does it "walk" move . Which is bad in this house since we have press wood flooring. Worst stuff ever. Get it wet and under the painted seal via a crack and when it dries it shreds and is just super messy.

With laminate stick and peel tile.... It's ALWAYS better to grout them ... there's grout made for those type of tiles

Most of the floors in the kitchen and hallway had tested positive for asbestos so he can't remove it without shelling out a lot of money for professionals, but as long as he just covers it is fine.

Hey! I got it all tested before I started the hallway/kitchen project. It was the only thing that came back positive out of all the floorings and the ceiling tiles.

In commercial work, you never leave old flooring down. You could loose your job. If I was doing that job, I would rip every bit of that old crap out. Flooring mastic is not friable, so it’s not really a problem. I’m sure the finished product will be great, just not how I would have done it.
