In today's video I show you how to fix your AC system. This fix can work on P1 Volvo's and may work for other vehicles with similar compressor designs as well. The fix is accomplished using small zip ties on the AC compressor clutch to reduce the gap between the clutch and the pulley. This gap widens over time with use and therefore will typically occur on higher mileage vehicles, however, wear may vary depending on how the car is maintained and used on a daily basis. All P1 Volvos use this type of compressor (C30, C70, V50, S40). This method worked very well for me an dI recommend this is a free attempt to fix your AC. Unfortunately I cannot guarantee the same results, but I hope this video is helpful and can save you some money! As always, understand that if you attempt this on your own vehicle it is at your own risk. Stay safe!

This is a magic fix. I had this exact problem on a 2005 V50. Watched the video and completed the job in under 1 hour. I used wheel ramps to lift the front and it now works perfectly. Thanks so much for posting this. My air con is now perfect.

@@AmrinDosanjh I will do, Its a 2012 R-Design Polestar tune with a manual. I am super excited to finally be able to drive a manual. If there is one thing I had to request would be an exhaust video. Loved the little clip we got, but I am interested to hear how your setup sounds under load and such. Thanks so much!

Just got quoted €1400 to replace my entire A/C in my Volvo V50. I'm positive that this will fix the problem (intermittent AC failure when engine is hot) for the price of a T25 torx driver and a couple of zip ties. Thanks so much dude! One small comment: you could include a suggestion to use a feeler gauge to see how many zip ties you need to add. The gap between the A/C clutch should be 0.3mm all round - so just add as many zip ties as needed to achieve this.

I did the same on my 2006 Volvo V50, however I used steel wire. I suggest also using a feeler gauge to get the clutch gap near factory spec. I think the spec is around .015”. Check various points around the clutch. My clutch was around .030” when it was intermittently shutting down.

This video has had a Valium effect on me. I just bought a 2009 V50 and the AC did just as this video described. I don’t have lifts possibly can take it to a mechanic and see if they’ll do this procedure. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you so much for posting this video.

you might have enough room to do this if you use the factory scissor jack in the trunk, and then take the front right wheel and wheel well cover off to get at the compressor. I doubt a shop would wanna do it as its not really a "by the books" fix and they don't wanna be held liable for any potential damage.

You need a new ac compressor clutch around 50 for the kit . On mine s 40 2008 I replaced the compressor belt, pulleys and they charge the ac again. Ice cold now . No complains ,the car has 180 k miles . I use only oem parts .

Thank you just used on my 2011 C70 and it worked great! Like yours it struggled but kept going during the 102 heat but I think it will work even better after I get it to .3 mm all around with more zip ties.

Interesting. I just always attributed this problem to FOMOCO (Ford) and assumed they just used a unit out of a cheap ass Ford Escort or something.

It friking works mate! I love you!! You cant imagine how many people has seen the car and no even close to fix it. After some research I've done, there's another way of doing it, which is taking the clutch plate out and take some washers out from the center of the plate, here is the video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppd1naVoxJjOnYU.html @@AmrinDosanjh

Why does this work?
@hansschultz6309
@hansschultz6309 11 ай бұрын
He explained it pretty well. The gap in the clutch was too big for the magnet to pull it in and engage the AC compressor. The hotter it got in the engine bay the more the gap grew. The zip ties reduced the gap and allowed the clutch to engage when it was called for by the electrified magnets. You could also pull the clutch face off using a special tool that parts stores will loan you and remove some shims on the pulley shaft. It’s pretty easy to do and is more of a proper fix. Ignore the moments from the guy who replaced everything and uses only OEM parts. This channel is not meant for him.

This is equivalent to getting a Band-Aid when you really need stitches. You can expect this solution to last about 4,000 miles. However, the primary reason why the a/c compressor clutch doesn't engage, is because the clutch bearing is wearing out. Yes; there are specialty shops that only rebuild vehicle a/c compressors.
